This album brought me so much joy during the hardest time of my life. I got diagnosed with a chronic pain condition suddenly and I've been hurting so bad. When I heard this album, I felt so much happiness. I cried. I needed that moment to laugh and dance so bad. It was such an experience, I'll never forget it.
The album was inspired by Beyonce's late gay Uncle Johnny who the album was dedicated to. He introduced her to Disco, Dance, House (created by Black DJ's on Chicago's Southside which birthed EDM/Dance, etc.) There were also, obviously, Afrobeat/Reggae and Afro-Caribbean influences. Global Black Music. ;) Her inspirations were Donna Summer/Disco, House, the Black gay ballroom scene ( of which she celebrated 12 icons) and more. She's regularly reinventing.
