The Taser has definitely replaced the baton and Pepper spray as the first less lethal option on an officer's belt. I do not know of any incidents when the baton was effective BUT with today's antitrust of the police, they need to have as many less lethal options on their belt as possible before lethal force
Get out of here dude, if we lose our batons we'll lose the most important tool on our belt. How am I supposed to scratch my back, with body armor on, without a baton 😂 UPDATE: I finally found another good use for a baton. A bunch of kids had a fire going in a local park, they left without snuffing the fire out. So I had to use my baton to break up the coals and douse it with water. I'm pretty much a fire fighter now. Just saying.
i live in a country where you cant own a gun to defend yourself, my uncle gave me a baton because he knows i like going out at night, one night i was walking home with my mother and some dude was following us and pulled a knife on us, not a huge blade but it was still a knife, he was asking for our phones and wallets, i said sure man just calm down and instead i pulled out the baton and broke his wrist with it, the knife flew away and he ran away, my mom and me were fine and unharmed and we kept our stuff, so yes im gonna keep carrying and swearing by my useless baton

When I lived in NYC where it's difficult to own a gun I carried a baton. I protected a young kid from being assaulted by a large man. I tapped his elbow and knees until he stopped attacking the kid. It definitely worked.
@@blaynegreiner9365 . Maybe the user wasn’t trying to permanently damage the attacker’s elbows; and knees ; the user probably wanted to tap the attacker’s elbows; and knees hard enough to send him a massage to stop with his attacking the victim. If the user had wanted to he could have seriously damage the attacker’s elbows; and knees; or strike the attacker very hard in the neck; and most likely killing him! The ASP baton is no toy! I purchased a collapsible ASP baton earlier this month online; I purchased one of those collapsible ASP batons after 9/11 ; and I would practice swinging it; and hitting pieces of wood until it finally broke. If I was to strike a thug in his neck region; or on his face; or head he might bleed to death; and that would be okay with me!
pretty sure the whole point is that that specific encounter is not too common. In fact, assault/violent encounters can and should be avoided as much as possible just by words. Verbal Judo type-stuff.
I don’t have 8 years of police experience, but I do have 28 years of police experience. I was hired when they did not issue mace or tasers. We had a baton and a pistol (and yes a revolver is a pistol). So I learned to fight with a baton on the streets. I have ended many fights with one strike to the leg and arm for the most part. But I practice a lot with a straight baton. The side handle baton hit hard but rotates down in the hand as it spins. A straight baton is more precise. Most people have played tennis, ping pong, badminton etc and know they can hit a small moving target with a straight handle “baton”. There is no nice way to hit them so hit like you are breaking furniture and one hit will likely end the fight. The exception being someone on drugs. But a baton can break them down mechanically but hitting joints if it gets that bad. Using mace causes you to have to deal with biohazard as the suspect starts issuing spit and snot in good quantities and you still have to handle them to cuff. Most rookies I trained were like you until they saw a baton work. I carried a collapsible baton when I worked undercover. But I have not hit anyone with one so I’ll not comment on that. Tasers , batons and hand strikes- the suspect will sometimes be injured when you drop them to the ground and hit the concrete or something hard. So, I love you but you are wrong .
Seeing how much modern officers lack physical skills, and rely on their mace and tazer, it's probably for the best they don't have them anymore. Also female officers would be useless with them and you know it.
@@joshuaslate3719 The term pistol and handgun are interchangeable. That's why there's such a term as a semi auto pistol, which contrasts from a revolver or single shot pistol. And by your definition, any weapon with a fixed chamber would be a pistol, regardless of anything else. I know, you're going to complain about straw man argument with the last bit, but that's just to prove a point about the stupidity of this. A revolver is a pistol in the same way a Glock 19 is a pistol, they may function differently than each other, but they both fall under the pistol, or handgun definition. Just like how a rifle and a shotgun are exceptionally different, but both fall under the definition of a long gun.
No weapon is perfect, neither is it useless. Undercover carry them in the UK, I'm not sure whether the police still use batons here since pepper spray become prevalent. I've seen plenty videos of police over here getting into sticky situations with pepper spray precisely because most combat situations arise out of drug misuse, most crooks are sensible and don't want the huge hike in prison time cos they beat a copper to get away only to get caught eventually. I like these videos but I think there's some level of the algorithm making a more considered opinion less appealing to viewers. Nuance isn't conducive to good engagement!
Correct me if I'm wrong but you're referring to a solid baton rather than extendable right? Well he's talking specifically about extendable, and the reason these don't tend to work well is because they take longer to deploy and don't hit quite as hard. I can attest to that latter point since I have been hit with them while stone cold sober, and when the adrenaline is rushing, you don't feel a thing from those. Therefore, you can't rely on the normal hits to disable the opponent, and have to escalate to more dangerous targets, like the head or neck. This is where it leaves the legal part of the diagram and 9 times out of 10 heads over to the effective but not legal portion A solid baton is a fine weapon for a police officer like you said, but ultimately that's not what he's talking about
Considering it’s longer than a knife and able to break bones, i get a feeling that it’s a decent wacking weapon for self defense if you don’t want to risk actually killing people like a knife could
With perfect accuracy, then yes you don't run the risk of killing somebody with a baton. However nobody has perfect accuracy, and if you accidentally strike somebody in the temple with that thing you can absolutely kill them with it. Granted it's not as big of a risk of killing the person as a knife would be, but there's still a risk.
@@zaodedong9935 I think the baton is a nice in between a knife and a gun. I didn't carry since I was going through some restrictive liberal states, but I did have a 24" collapsible baton on me when walking the dogs or going out to the car. Someone tried to mug me in the hotel parking lot coming back. He had a pocket knife, I pulled out the baton. He ran away. Worked as intended.
I've been a Patrol Officer in some of the hardest areas of Southern Arizona. I have had ample opportunity to use a Baton, OC, and Taser. I have to say, the Baton can be perfectly LEGALLY effective. When someone squares up with you and you start blasting their elbow & forearm/wrist & hand areas, they tend to think twice about their previous actions...
In cali they are completely illegal.. the justice system favors criminals here so my only options are run( family of 4) a 3 inch knife taser or tiny oc spray.... I wish we could carry a baton here. I never want to use a knife for self defence and tasers dont help you keep distance.
I haven't been a police officer, and I really don't understand the procedures. I'd prefer to ask about the "effective vs legal" problem. Don't police officers know the difference between an attacker and an ordinary person?
I can see a number of pros to using this weapon, even though I never have myself: -Easily carried, portable, light -Threatening sound and movement when deployed. Sometimes that's enough to deter an attacker. -Has a nasty reputation. Yeah, it can be used to really wreck someone. It can be scary. Even if technically proven a bad weapon. -Longer range than a knife and less risk of lethal injury on the target. -As other have stated, if aimed properly it can be an ideal disarming weapon. If it breaks a wrist it may even disable a threat completely, giving you time to call 911 or run away. -If someone is charging at you, a sidestep followed by a sharp blow to the leg can cripple your attacker, making them regret their choices, without risk of lethal injury. -Other uses aside from as a weapon. Can break glass or snap a tree branch. -Can fend off a dog or wild animal. Getting a bladed weapon stuck in one might result in you getting bit, which is really bad if they are rabid. -Probably faster to deploy than pepperspray or a tazer, though either have their advantages over a baton. -Can potentially knock out an opponent, though IRL its not like in movies and may result in severe permanent injury. Though that is acceptable in some mugging or house defense scenarios. Probably not something to use against a simply aggressive/unruly/drunk person and I agree on the bit about cops abusing it. I can seriously f**k someone up, send people to the hospital and incur lawsuits, whereas mace/tazers won't. But against an _armed_ opponent it seems like a weapon of choice. Fast, threatening, effective, reaching, disabling and disarming.
like i say, half of self defense is presentation, if you can present yourself in a way that shows potential aggressors that you aren't someone to fuck around with, it will dissuade any assaults/muggings. whipping out a baton is one such way of doing that by showing you have a weapon and are willing to use it, but avoiding the potential pitfalls that pulling a gun might have (for example if you are in a crowded situation where bringing a gun into that situation could lead to collateral damage, or might not actually be allowed either socially or legally)
Yeah, I think I agree with all the comments and not this guy, on this one. I have been researching the collapsible baton because I have been taking kick boxing and stick fighting classes for about a year and a half, and am getting reasonably good with the Kali sticks that I would likely be able to defend against someone who had a knife. I will never be good enough with a knife to defend against a knife-and it looks like nobody really is. I figure a collapsible baton should be a decent stand-in for a kali stick. :)
@@graveyj2000 And don't discount the kali stick if you have nothing else left lol. Getting smashed by one of those HURTS. Not as much as a baton, but still.
I'm a Muay Thai instructor (KRU) and a Balintawak practitioner (Filipino stick and knife). A baton isn't the same as a burnt Rattan, but they're interchangeable in utility. After years of live sparring with sticks and being around high level artists, I can say with 100% confidence that a well trained Martial Artist is extremely dangerous in a self-defense scenario with a Baton. It took me years to even score a significant hit on a well practiced person. I mean, common. You almost knocked out your buddies teeth by merely being careless. As far as the legality conversation goes, I'd rather be able to hash it out with my lawyer than be dead on the pavement.
If it comes to a legitimate threat to your life why wouldn't you simply use a gun then? Far more effective than a stick. Lots of places a baton is looked at as the same level of force as a firearm. So even that argument depending on the area doesn't really pan out.
Yeah but he's not talking about well experienced martial artists. He's talking about everyday common people using a baton for self defense. The point of self defense is defending your life in the most efficient and effective way possible. A common person is going to be way more of both of those if using a gun, over a baton, bar none. In your effective way possible. A common person is going to be way more of both of those if using a gun, over a baton, bar none. In your scenario, if an experienced martial artist were to use said baton, in a court of law that might be misconstrued as being more assault with intent to kill than self defense, which makes a huge difference. It's viewed as, well if you hit this person here in X place or you hit them X amount of times then you intended on hurting that subject rather than just defending yourself. If you shoot a subject in the chest twice while he's coming at you, then at least here in the state of texas, that's known as standing your ground. Not to mention that if you hurt someone, even someone that attacked you, that person can come back and sue the shit out of you. Self defense is about way more than just being good at fighting. It's about knowing what to do and what not to do in a given situation, and knowing how the laws in your state work.

I’ve seen a guy fighting 2 guys one time while I was buying groceries with my parents about 3 years ago. They were in the parking lot and the 2 guys seems to be like drug addicts that were asking for money forcefully. One of the goons was about to pull something from his pocket when the dude got his baton, extended it and hit the guy on the temple. It all happened so quick that the other guy was confused and just took off running while his friend is out cold bleeding.
So, only works when the "goons" are so damn slow that they take longer to pull out something than it takes for you to see him pull things out, react, pull out a baton, deploy it, and then somehow hit him in the head.
@@NoName-mi8js it takes like a second to to pull and deploy a baton at the same time. Also from what I remember the baton that the guy used might be automatic cause it didn’t look like he flicked his wrist.
@NoName-mi8js No, it can actually work in different ways, too. Come on, man, not trying to be a jerk, but think about what you said. That logic of yours, which i'm being generous calling it logic, could be used for anything. So let me get this straight. A gun only works for a police officer if he happens to pull it out before the bad guy does and shoot him before the cop gets shot. Otherwise it doesn't work. Is that what the hell you're saying? I mean, what the hell are you talking about? So I guess it's better to not have a gun at all, and only the bad guy can have one. So that way, even if he is slow, pulling it out, you're gonna be shot.Regardless is that your plan? I mean, we really shouldn't fight back anyways, because it only works if we happen to be a better fighter than them. So if we're not, then we lose anyways, so there's no point of even trying or doing anything, I mean, listen, how absurd your logic is . Airplanes are only gonna work unless it crashes and kills everybody So I mean, I guess they're basically pointless. It's amazing That that's the argument you would use, even if you're against batons, and by the way, i'm not for batons, I'm not against them. But the reasons that have been given to argue against them are so illogical, a nonsensical. I don't need to carry up a time.I have a permit to carry a gun if I choose to . I pray to god.I would never have to use it. But i'm not gonna sit there and say, well, it's only gonna work unless it jams somehow because it was manufactured incorrectly, so don't even bother.Yeah, I guarantee you wouldn't think that if somebody was breaking into your home, attempting to hurt your family. Because I guarantee with an attitude like that. Most likely, I doubt you're gonna put up much of a physical defense yourself. You'd be the first one saying, honey, go see what that is
My baton has been an effective deterrent. During the lockdown my girl and I were feeding stray dogs at night. Three guys in a car saw her went few meters ahead and stopped. I got out my baton and stood near her. They got out of the car, saw me with the baton and sat back in. I think a good self defense weapon is one which you don't have to use

Yeah pretty much. He maybe has a point for the cops, but anyone else who gets attacked should absolutely be smacking their assailant in the head with a metal bar if they don't have a gun.
@Apple Support For Police a gun should be the very last thing they use to gain compliance. For a regular person a gun should also be the last thing on your list of priorities. Being a gun carrying advocate doesn't mean that he believes its always ok to shoot someone to death, and even if he believes that at the very least a gun is way more effective than a baton. Police carry a gun because they are tasked with entering a dangerous situation. The gun is a last resort and should be treated as such. Yes, hitting someone on the head with a baton will make them bleed out and probably die and shooting someone will probably do the same thing, but if that's the case then why carry the baton if it's just going to do the guns job less effectively and safely for the person who carries it. The issue he points is that the use cases of a baton where they are effective aren't typically legal, and the times where its legal to use the baton don't gain compliance. However, this idea may be biased given that whenever a baton is used unlawfully, videos of that scenario are sent online and get views, which would never be the case with the times batons were used legally. Besides the alternatives Hard2Hurt recommends are tactical whips, which he fully acknowledges would probably not be a good, justifiable idea for a citizen, let alone a police officer lol. But at least they were whipped into compliance instead of having their heads bleeding out.
the point is, in a fight a baton doesnt really hurt and doesnt make people comply, unless you hit them in the head, but if you hit someone in the head with a baton it might kill them, for a cop i dont need to explain why is dumb to use a Non-lethal weapon that only makes effect if you use lethal force with it, for a untrained civilian, using a baton most likely you will lose the baton an then get hit by it, as a trained civilian, if you have a little bit of racionality and emotion, you know that killing someone is not a good thing to do and will change your life forever so probably its not how you're gonna handle every situation.
@appIesupport yeah, break his knees, perhaps torn a ligament and maybe give them permanent damage. if you wanna make people hurt, there is other weapons more eficient than a baton. and if you wanna make people comply, there is other tools more eficient than a baton. so why use a baton really?
"This is not merely a self-defense tool; this is a weapon. It's the instrument you employ to harm an individual that you're either angry or frustrated with, as you can't manage them solely through your combat skills." Absolutely, that's precisely what a self-defense tool is. It provides individuals who lack specific combat skills (which is about 99% of the population) with an advantage over an attacker. 🙄
Police by definition is (or should be) using lawful violence for the interest of the public. Policemen don't have to be ninjas or samurais to manage everyone through their combat skills, they just need the equipment (as in weapons) and basic training on their weapons and tactics to be able to manage anyone. With the power of numbers on their side if needed. Because it's not about them proving they are the best in combat, it's about them enforcing the law for the benefit of all of us
ok man you say that like its a bad thing besides more assaults happen with fists because someones angry and guess what you always have them unless they get cut off but.
The biggest thing going for the baton... is that when it is deployed, usually that's the end of it. Nobody wants to be hit with a giant metal stick lol

It seems crazy to me that using something as low key as a Baton for a legit, true self defense situation could be considered illegal. If we are allowed to use something as straight up lethal as a gun for self defense, then why on earth would a Baton not be considered so? No, defence is the shields (or body armour for example) primary purpose to protect against incoming attacks. The sword or mace(in this case baton because let's face it baton and mace are just fancy words for fancy clubs) are for offence delivering damage to incapacitate or kill an enemy. Yes either or can be used for their oppisite intentions from which they were intended. but it's the primary purpose either was made for that should classify it as either a defencive tool or an offencive tool after all that is what it will be best at. Clubs, guns ,tazers swords, knifes, pepper spray these are all personal offence tool or "weapons". Understand Offence or the threat of it is also in its self a form of defence because it can discourage potential assailants from attempting to attack. And when attacked it may be nessasarry to meet the incoming attack and retaliate to it in order to insure your continuing personal safety which is what everyone is really talking about when they talk about "self defence" really it's a conversation about "personal safety" and what levels of "offencive measures" and "defence messures" are warranted to maintain it.
My friend used one to protect herself from a guy who assaulted her. After she was pushed to the ground, she pulled it out & hit the guy across the knee, that gave her a chance to get away.
Frank Taylor sounds easily possible tho, it gives the user a way to cause more damage to defend themselves better. Yes it can be taken away, so can a knife and gun albeit not as easily.
The reason we're calling bullshit is You need some good leverage to expand it. When you're wrestled on the ground is not easily opened. And we know from experience using this. Good reply. But I have to ask you honestly, as you are the professional in confrontations by likely sheer number of experience. _If_ a baton is weapon where it is clearly not for self defensive, and is dangerously offensive on many levels from legality, concealment, and assault charge more likely because one is using said offensive weapon.... Does this not make it the ultimate deterant? Did you have to draw it ever, or had you felt it did have some deterant factor for compliance? I realize of course one should not carry anything they are not willing to use, and applied to carrying an offensive weapon, that is an issue. But still, isn't there a 'fear of the bâton' that it does work for a deterant of action? If you had to reach for a weapon, (assuming the other is unarmed) would it not be better to shift policing away from deadly force of a gun to choosing an effective offensive weapon? ('Charline horses', break a hand finger, or forearm.) Would this not be better than straight to the Colt, for death avoidance?

As a 32 year cop (20 on SWAT & as the department DT Instructor) I have to say that it's a training issue. A suspect can pose one of 5 levels and you can only use the baton on someone that is level #4. First level is Cooperative (no force is allowed at all) #2 is Passive Resistor #3 is Active Resistor #4 is Combative/Assaultive #5 is a Deadly Threat Next problem is that baton companies want you to use the baton on "Green" zones (which happen to be areas heavily muscled such as the "Buttocks") which cause pain but really dont stop a serious threat. Red zones such as the Head or Spine can cause serious injury or death should only be struck when the suspect poses a Deadly Threat (In which case you shouldn't be even trying to use your baton unless it's the only thing you have). I teach the baton as a Long Range Weapon, and should be used against the "Closest Target" which is usually the Suspects lead leg or fist. You smack his knee or hand and it almost ALWAYS works. But those are usually "Yellow" targets and can cause injury (broken bones in the hand etc). I've had to use the baton many times and it never failed me. I can say that several officers.have complained to me.thst the baton doesn't work and that they wont use it because it's ineffective. I then say "Oh Yeah? Let me hit you with one shot". No one has ever taken me up on it. Knowledge and skill is power.

And the weapon locks an untrained user into dangerous swings which open you to knife stabs everywhere if the attacker just takes a hit. It's the equivalent of wild haymakers.
Although not used as a weapon in this case, the baton has successfully been used countless times by officers and civilians alike to bust out car windows saving trapped or unconscious victims. That is actually probably the worse situation to try and use one in my opinion. It requires a large swing to be at all effective. You are not going to be able to swing it enough while inside the car to have an effect.

@@G.Saint-Star My dad has a one of those polypropylene mini-bats you can get some places. He's a long haul trucker and uses it as a tire checker to thump the tires with but it also makes a dandy little defense tool if someone tries to steal from the truck. I've been in his rig before and he's got the room for a decent swing...and the reach. He's 6'7 so most people don't want to deal with him anyway in a fair fight cause he's so dang tall.
@Legendary Force Clearly you are not a LEO. What he failed to demonstrate in the video is that even striking with the baton is ineffective. The only part on the baton worth landing a strike with is the threaded tip. When you are fighting and have adrenaline pumping, aiming that threaded tip where you want it to go on a person that is attacking you and moving is near impossible. I've seen them used in person three times and none of the times were they effective. The only time they are worth a shit is if you hit a bony (illegal) area with the threaded tip. The only "legal" areas to hit a human with a baton in a law enforcement capacity are meaty areas of the body. If you hit bony areas and break them, now you have to explain why you hit a bony area (probably because the suspect was moving) to avoid losing your job or obtaining charges. Personally, my baton has stayed in it's holster (I'm required to have it) since I've been doing my job. I'd rather use my hands and OC spray.
You have to have an expensive one to be effective. Like over $75 and up. Those will not break and are sturdy and will fold someone. The older ones in like '98 to 2003 were pure steel and extremely hard to close and open. To open you had to have good technique and super flick of the wrist. To close them you had to pound them on the damn ground.
@Molly Bason no, self defense isn't "removing yourself from a dangerous situation" That's called fleeing. Self-defense is literally about winning a fight, are you incompetent?
@Molly Bason if you avoid conflict then you don't need self defense. Self defense is the act of physically stopping the threat. Removing yourself from the situation is safer but it isn't always an option.
@Molly Bason you can't defend yourself from something that isn't attacking you. again fleeing and self-defense are two different things if you flee you don't have to defend If you defend that means you didn't flee or were unable to. Dude come on it's pretty simple any lawyer or officer or martial artist or MMA fighter or anyone that knows a hint about what self-defense actually is could tell you that
Of course this’s coming from a normal sized dude. When you’re a 5”1 female and a big dude is squaring up… yeah I’m gonna do whatever I can to increase the damage I can do. It’s not a fair fight otherwise.
This bald dwarf do not know what he is talking about, law enforcement in Europe always carry baton and use is pretty often, some can only carry batons so thats the only weapon i am allowed to use.
Arguing with you: 1) One of the best ways to take someone out of the fight is blunt force trauma to the head. (Matt Thornton: Straight Blast Gym, possibly misquoted) 2) If a guy has a knife, a stick is a great way to keep the distance and knock it from his hands.. you don't need to be trained in Kali to do this..it's natural 3) Defending yourself with a stick is rather Milquetoast for a judge/Jury.. They see HORRIBLE things in court.. and a few bruises on an illegal attacker is sort of...meh..to a judge. 4) Context and cameras.. If you're lawful, it will show. 5) Better to survive and go to court, than to think "I wish I'd had anything in my hands at all) while you bleed out 6) Knives are nasty. Chains are the tools of criminals. (see 3 above) Thanks tho. We disagree. Wish you the best.
Chains ? Im a complete novice in a fight situation but I think a baton would be advantageous over a chain because of the quicker recovery reaction 2nd and 3rd striking ability. Chain having a longer reach than baton but longer reactive 2nd strike ability?
Blunt force trauma to the head is the quickest way to end up in jail for manslaughter. Seriously, look up the guys that accidentally killed people just by punching them once. You go for the elbows, thighs, shoulders and the like.
I have had four occasions where the baton works great. Never had a moment where the baton failed. You have to understand: a great martial artist can make any item work. It's not up to the 'weapon' itself. It's up to the person.
so your a poet that needs to cary a self defense baton and have been in 4 situations where it worked as intended? what did someone not give you the right change and you beat them half to death and got it corrected?

I'm sorry that the internet is full of such shitty people. I would also like to hear, however the stories of what happened. The more we know the better informed we are and the better prepared we are.
If you look at historical weapons, almost every melee weapon is characterised as basically being a kin to a big stick; usually pointy at the end, but not always (maces, quarterstaffs). A stick can be used to deflect incoming strikes, much better than using your hands if defending against other melee weapons, and it also provides a reach advantage compared to fists. A baton seems a pretty reasonable extension of ones abilities, a power multiplier.
Exactly. The whole point of melee weapons is to enhance what you already have. Yeah, you can lock someone without a baton, if you know the technique. Add a baton and you’re now twice as capable of disabling the threat. If using a non lethal melee weapon doesn’t up your game, you’re shit at martial arts to begin with.
Brandon most common was probably a quarter staff, spear, or axe. Def spear was very common. Maces not so much since their greatest use was against full plate (typical fantasy knight armor), and a commoner wasn’t likely to come up against a warrior who could afford full plate. As for swords, well crafted ones, such as the Norse Ulfbert, were indeed very pricy, but I believe you could get a kind of shitty one for a decent price. Not everyone walked around with swords, but they were easily one of the most popular weapons for self defense - if you were going to be traveling or something, you might bring a sword with for protection.
LET ME TELL YOU having worked in prison for 30 yrs I've used pepper spray knee knockers side handle batons, this expandable baton has saved many officers from an inmate with a shank and OH YA I CARRY ONE DAILY. SO WHY ONLY 8 YRS
I absolutely agree. I've been a cop for 40+ years. Retired but still work special duty assignments. I started with a 23" wood baton. I loved it. The baton is not a "beat into submission" weapon. It is used in addition to other self defense strategies. Create distance, intimidation, holds and take-downs. On duty my last 20 years I carried an ASP 19" steel collapsible. It's tip is blunt so there is little chance of it causing severe injury that could lead to death, and trust me when I say it....IT fucking hurts like hell when you are stabbed in the stomach with it.
This guys a good example of experienced and educated people still not knowing what theyre talking about. Ive seen batons break BRICKS and my tiny 14 inch baton breaks apart tree trunks like theyre watermelon. These can kill with one hit to the head and will easily break bones. A very good defense tool indeed.
Ah, another dumbass that goes "Oh, why don't you just get hit by one, then?" LMAO. Not only did you complete fail to watch the video or understand it, you literally said the thing being called out.
But that’s exactly the point, it can definitely kill but if you’re a cop and in a deadly force encounter, you should go for your gun. The thing about being an LEO is that policy will dictate where and when you can hit with a baton. That’s usually it’s when a subject is assault is combative. And you can only hit primary and secondary zones. Primary being center mass or the meaty parts of the arms and legs; quads, hamstrings, calves, biceps, and triceps. Secondary being the bones parts of the arms and legs; knees, elbow, wrists, and shoulders but must be justified in the use of force spectrum. The head, neck, spine, groin and chest are completely off limits unless you’re involved in a deadly force encounter. But if an assaultive subject escalates to deadly force by pulling a knife or a gun out, you can’t rely on the baton to end the threat. You will most likely be going for your gun too. If the subject is assaultive, by following policy and only targeting the authorized primary locations, your strikes may be ineffective. If you strike secondary zones you will be more effective and possibly legal but risk hitting the red zones and using deadly force when it’s not needed and getting fired/arrested after the fact. If the baton is all you have, you are most likely in SOL. Now imagine the subject manages to grab it and take it from you and use it against you, since they are untrained and not subjected to rules, they will strike your head, neck, or ribs and put you into a deadly force encounter. In that case you better have a gun.
I'm gonna be honest, I thought you're actually supposed to use it that way. If someone attacked me, i would pull out a "defense tool" and beat them relentlessly until they either fell unconscious or gave up. I figure it's still better that stabbing them or something

By the time you reach for a baton, your only other option is putting a .40 JHP in someone's face. I'd prefer to have that option. The Baton is good for creating distance between you and an attacker. It's a reliable way to take someone down, without executing them, in close quarters. I don't know about police work, but it's great for security. Whereas a firearm is "deadly force", a baton is only "deadly force" if used on the head, face or neck. Anywhere else and it's much easier to justify.

I carried one of those as an MP in the early 2000's. The only time I had to use it was when I had a really drunk guy being belligerent and trying to take my sidearm out of my holster while I was trying to detain him. It was a retention holster, so the chances of a guy that inebriated actually getting the firearm free were pretty low, but I wasn't willing to take the chance. He got a fractured elbow. I honestly missed my mark... I was aiming for his upper arm, but he flinched when he saw it coming and pulled his arm up, so he got a trip to the hospital before he was taken to the base detention facility until his 1SG could come get him. I got recommended for an award for taking a guy off the road that was well past 2x the legal limit for drunk driving, and he got his arm in a sling for a while and a suspended license. For what it's worth, I warned him, and then I only swung once. I can see how these things could easily be overused in a stressful situation, but when used with restraint they can be really effective at stopping inappropriate behavior.
Being a cop as well you should know the vast majority of baton uses are not actually as a weapon or self defense and more used in cases where breaking windows is necessary from a distance
Batons can be a legal mess. Especially if you have a liberal jury and/or judge. Its still a less than lethal option and with training can be utilized properly. A hard hit to the thigh can end a fight. Similarly, boxing techniques can also be seen as agressive/offensive. Hitting someones hand with a baton will certainly be viewwd as more defense than squaring up with a guy. None the less, we can all agree that our judicial branch is a joke. I still say he's confused as to what exactly a" self-defense tool" is. It's literally anything to defend yourself. Anything can be deadly in the right hands.
You are going at this from a common sense standpoint, but the law doesn't work like that. Intent for something to be a weapon, such as a combat knife, is what qualifies as something that is bannable even as a self defense weapon. Kitchen knives are also banned from travel because while the intended purpose is for preparing ingredients, the ease with which they become a weapon for killing and their lethality makes them a real threat. Depends on the country if the argument I just made goes. Some countries are icky even about stuff like pepper spray, or self defense in general. To the point in places like Italy if you beat up a burglar coming into your house, or even worse, shoot them, you'll go to jail.
@@BygoneT the point of self defense is to survive m8. something being illegal doesn't make it cease to exist especially in the theoretical sense. Self-defense being illegal doesn't make it non Self-defense
I must be misunderstanding something here about why being able to defend yourself is a bad thing. Someone attacks you, you don't want to be hurt = defend your self. That's where it ends doesn't it? Is everyone supposed to know how to defend themselves with their hands alone, what if an attacker has a knife? It's all about what-ifs at the end of the day and I'd like to minimise my chances of getting hurt if someone wanted to attack me and I don't believe people should be judged by which means they manage to do it.
I was a use of force instructor for most of my career. The baton (blunt force) has been on the police force continuum for a few hundred years. There is nothing magic about an expandable baton, it serves the same purpose as the old wood one. The advantage it has is that it can be carried on the duty belt at all times as opposed to the old ones usually being left in the car. The baton is like anything else, if you practice and understand its limitations it can be effective. Unfortunately, most people including cops use it like a baseball bat.
He didn't say they didn't work. He said that the overlap between effectiveness and legality was extremely thin. To make them effective, you tend to head over into brutality territory, because you have to inflict so MUCH damage in order to get the victim to comply. I mean... is it better than nothing? Yea, absolutely. But unless you're so much more skilled than the average LEO who's deploying one, chances are by the time you're done "defending," yourself, you're going to be facing serious criminal charges and civil lawsuits.
@Pierre LeDouche Yea... Rodney King happened in 1992, about the time I went to Basic training. I'm kinda familiar with it. And you're absolutely correct, they were not using correct baton techniques. In order to successfully "subdue" an opponent with a baton.. you kinda HAVE to beat the ever loving fuck out of them, and act which usually goes beyond the limits of "proper use of force." If the opponent is on some sort of substance, be it drugs or alcohol, you generally have to cause structural damage in order to get a subdual to work. Are their supremely skilled stick fighters out there who can get the job done WITHOUT brutalizing the opponent? Sure.. but despite your assertions, fighters of that caliber are few and far between.. as evidenced by the sheer number of stories where an officer had to resort to excessive force with a baton. Again... is it better than nothing? Sure. But I think I'd prefer it to be my last ditch effort, and instead rely on OC or a taser as my first line of defense. And no offense man... but brevity??????

Agreed. I was honestly hoping to learn something new, or at least see another perspective. But the moment he said “this is not a self defense tool, this is a weapon” he showed just how little thought he put into the subject.
Well what’s the evidence that it works well the only videos you see of batons being used is when some kids getting whooped on the ground or somebody with the baton is getting whopped because they only have a baton
I understand what he is saying because the term they use here in Canada is force plus one. So if someone attacks you there is a limit to what you can do to them to claim selfdefense. Batons generally break bones amd you can't legally smash someone in the face with a baton and claim selfdefense. So basically if you are using a baton on a suspect generally it becomes excessive force because of the damage produced. We don't even get batons where I work, we're only allowed a can of level 3 OC spray and that shit only works about half of the time. The only time we can carry a baton is if we're doing transport, and then it is carried alongside a pistol.
It worked every time I used it, on people and animals. You break a knee, the guy goes down. You hit the hand, he drops what he’s holding. You smack the attacking dog in the side of the head, it wanders off and dies. I don’t agree with using it for complicated kata holds, because no one practices them. That’s my anecdote.
I was considering carrying a baton on my walks for Coyotes no people. What are your thoughts on this if one comes too close? Thanks for your comments in advance.

The Taser has definitely replaced the baton and Pepper spray as the first less lethal option on an officer's belt. I do not know of any incidents when the baton was effective BUT with today's antitrust of the police, they need to have as many less lethal options on their belt as possible before lethal force

A revolver is not a pistol. A fixed chamber weapon is a pistol. A revolving chamber weapon is a revolver.

@@oneproudbrowncoat not really. I saw a black man on the news get shot for pulling up his pants..
Whoop
I can see a number of pros to using this weapon, even though I never have myself:
-Easily carried, portable, light
-Threatening sound and movement when deployed.

I mean, we really shouldn't fight back anyways, because it only works if we happen to be a better fighter than them. So if we're not, then we lose anyways, so there's no point of even trying or doing anything, I mean, listen, how absurd your logic is .
Right? I thought this guy was being sarcastic or something. it's a very effective weapon.
the point is, in a fight a baton doesnt really hurt and doesnt make people comply, unless you hit them in the head, but if you hit someone in the head with a baton it might kill them, for a cop i dont need to explain why is dumb to use a Non-lethal weapon that only makes effect if you use lethal force with it, for a untrained civilian, using a baton most likely you will lose the baton an then get hit by it, as a trained civilian, if you have a little bit of racionality and emotion, you know that killing someone is not a good thing to do and will change your life forever so probably its not how you're gonna handle every situation.
It's the instrument you employ to harm an individual that you're either angry or frustrated with, as you can't manage them solely through your combat skills."

I know, right? I don't feel the need to engage in a fair fight with someone twice my size and strength intent on killing me.
And after that he says he's a supporter of concealed carry like what? Is that not the same thing?
Police by definition is (or should be) using lawful violence for the interest of the public. Policemen don't have to be ninjas or samurais to manage everyone through their combat skills, they just need the equipment (as in weapons) and basic training on their weapons and tactics to be able to manage anyone. With the power of numbers on their side if needed. Because it's not about them proving they are the best in combat, it's about them enforcing the law for the benefit of all of us

Technically yes. Any tool is for self defense but everyone just ouright uses to smack people.
NO
What kind of self defense do you practice? The gentle kind?
@@mindsstalker If the tool isn't a shield or not being there, must be a weapon. If weapon, designed to hurt/kill people.

Metro Sidearm where’d she have it? Her purse or?
Sounds like bullshit
Frank Taylor sounds easily possible tho, it gives the user a way to cause more damage to defend themselves better. Yes it can be taken away, so can a knife and gun albeit not as easily.
The reason we're calling bullshit is You need some good leverage to expand it. When you're wrestled on the ground is not easily opened. And we know from experience using this. And this is probably why op hasn't replied cause they know it's bullshit as most of us with a go-go-good brain call bullshit

('Charline horses', break a hand finger, or forearm.)
Would this not be better than straight to the Colt, for death avoidance?

As a 32 year cop (20 on SWAT & as the department DT Instructor) I have to say that it's a training issue.
A suspect can pose one of 5 levels and you can only use the baton on someone that is level #4.
First level is Cooperative (no force is allowed at all)
#2 is Passive Resistor
#3 is Active Resistor
#4 is Combative/Assaultive
#5 is a Deadly Threat
Next problem is that baton companies want you to use the baton on "Green" zones (which happen to be areas heavily muscled such as the "Buttocks") which cause pain but really dont stop a serious threat.

@@Mikesullin You're getting jacked when equipped a baton too, unless it's a shitty stupid duel. Don't get into duels.
People will rarely back down when hit with a baton (as opposed, say, getting faceful of pepper spray) and it's as hard to keep distance or strike effectively with one of these as unarmed.
Not to mention the baton's use of "extracting" non-compliant suspects from their cars.

Legendary Force
If you (an officer) feel threatened because a perp is larger than you, that’s not a good enough reason to use force
1) One of the best ways to take someone out of the fight is blunt force trauma to the head. (Matt Thornton: Straight Blast Gym, possibly misquoted)
2) If a guy has a knife, a stick is a great way to keep the distance and knock it from his hands.. you don't need to be trained in Kali to do this..it's natural
3) Defending yourself with a stick is rather Milquetoast for a judge/Jury.. They see HORRIBLE things in court.. and a few bruises on an illegal attacker is sort of...meh..to a judge.
4) Context and cameras.. If you're lawful, it will show.
5) Better to survive and go to court, than to think "I wish I'd had anything in my hands at all) while you bleed out

I was thinking the same. Force multiplier. Plus it technically isn’t lethal compared to a gun. Is it as effective as a gun? No.
I'm so happy I bought one
Brandon most common was probably a quarter staff, spear, or axe. Def spear was very common. Maces not so much since their greatest use was against full plate (typical fantasy knight armor), and a commoner wasn’t likely to come up against a warrior who could afford full plate. As for swords, well crafted ones, such as the Norse Ulfbert, were indeed very pricy, but I believe you could get a kind of shitty one for a decent price. Not everyone walked around with swords, but they were easily one of the most popular weapons for self defense - if you were going to be traveling or something, you might bring a sword with for protection.

Agreed

These batons work on a situation that is to protect yourself from a knife assault, guns can work in that situation but can possibly hit someone else in the crossfire.
But of course weapons are weapons, in some hands it would go fatally injure or kill someone like what he stated.

As someone who has carried nearly every form of self-defense tool, item, or weapon at one time or other, I can say with 100% confidence that it doesn’t matter what you have as long as you train with it.
I’ve known people that have trained their hand-to-hand combat skills to the point that they needed no tool.
Then I’ve met some who were so good with a knife, I’d give them that every time.
But some people don’t work well with confronting their attacker. Pepper spray it gel.
Some people don’t want to draw blood but want to be protected. BATON. Or maybe flashlight, depending on the time.
Self-defense depends completely on the user.
And to tell people that something isn’t a self-defense tool. Absolutely not. The self-defense tool is your brain and your determination. What you use to back that up is your choice.

yeah this guy has a hard on for using torches as a self defense tool but they function in the same way
You are going at this from a common sense standpoint, but the law doesn't work like that.

Right, that's what pepper-spray is for, so a baton is almost non-lethal because you can just use firm taps if the suspect resists.
Plus if someone manages to get it away from you now they have a weapon they can do serious harm to you. So in his flow chart it ends in either excessive force or welp you are getting fucked up.
Correctional officers carry these.. we certainly need these for self defense in the prison
