Hi all! I need to do a mea-culpa. I didn't mention, in the video, who this pony used to belong to. It was Lyndsey's, and I am an absolute IDIOT for not realising this before. When it came to me, it had a tail and came in a beautiful box with a beautiful note. I am so sorry, Lyndsey, that I let your pony get mixed with my baits. And I am sorry I let you down after you were so kind sharing your childhood toys. I must do better ❤
@@YuBeaceBaits are usually figures with extremely noticeable issues, like permanent marker marks or, in this case, a hole in the face. Usually they’re considered unfixable, however everyone has their own opinions about what makes a bait.
As someone who worked in a paint department let me tell you: anything with brown or “ochre” pigments in it is gonna change dramatically as it dries. They go from almost pastel to deeper earthier colors every time even with just a drop of ochre. Its most yellow tones and brown tones that have it, and they can be very beautiful so long as you’re prepared for what they’re gonna do. The way I deal when I need a very light pastel yellow and my pigments are more mustard and ochre, is I go ahead and add some red or pink in the mix to tone it more “warm pastel” and less “earthy mustard”. If you’re not happy with the results on this pone: may I suggest - white or very pale pink freckles and patches to cover the damage she came with in an intentional and artistic as opposed to chasing her exact shade of yellow? I think she’d be so cute with freckles!
Also if its any consolation, I have absurdly picky color vision and I’m having a really tricky time telling the difference between the repaired areas and the original areas onscreen, so I think you did a great job, especially matching a pale yellow!

Color matching is a difficult skill and I don't blame you one bit for not getting it perfect! It's crazy to watch Baumgartner Restoration use his years of experience to color match missing parts of damaged fine-art paintings. So high stakes! This pony sure had a lot of suprises for you but she turned out looking so fresh.
Thank you for your message 😊 When I was editing the video and whining about my colour matching, my partner actually said: Not everyone has Baumgartner's talent! So this comment made me chuckle. He's such an inspiration.
@@RetroGeekCrafts He's right! I feel like this is one of those things that can only be learned by failing over and over with the same paints for a long time until you are really familiar with your paints.
I watch the person who mixes paints to match swatches, and they are amazing! I always think at the end about how it's not actually a true match though because acrylics dry darker. I'm curious to see what the paint looks like after drying.
@@RetroGeekCrafts it's always better to mix a bit too light than too dark. It's much easier to add a bit of the highly pigmented paint on top than to try to lighten a darker base.
Thanks for showing me how to repair a pony’s mouth. I found a Firefly pony at the thrift store with a sheared off snout, I felt sorry for her and bought her. I purchased some blue glow in the dark doll hair and blue sparkly paint to touch her up. I got as far as cleaning her and pulling out her clipped hair but I had to pause the project due to a family member’s prolonged illness. I was very anxious about fixing her mouth but this video makes me feel like I can do it
Hi! I know this will sound VERY cheesy but I have genuinely never been happier whenever some RUclipsrs post a video, though in this occasion I quite literally giggled when I saw you posted and absolutely made my day, it also made me very happy when I was feeling kinda gloomy, so thank you very much for making this videos! Personally I enjoy them a lot with their humoristic remarks and genuine charm that makes it feel so authentic and funny! So again, thank you so much!✨
As someone who has worked with nylon wigs and fabrics/yarns, if you ever want to reduce the sheen on the hair, soak it for a bit in fabric softener. The sheen gives a fun gossamer look to this pony though, and it might even thin out the hair further, so definitely try it based on your own judgement. Every piece's little differences brings them to life
Something I've found that helps me with color matching is to do a little test swatch somewhere inconspicuous like under a hoof, then use a blow dryer to quickly dry the swatch and you can see a better representation of how it'll look when dry. Then you can adjust the paint color as needed and remove the swatches with some acetone. Having said that, I think you did a fabulous job matching the body color! Thank you for taking the time to make your videos, they're so inspiring and motivating!
a blowdryer is a great idea. I was wondering about letting the paint dry, but then the small supply of mixed paint would also be dried up. your idea would help a lot
I really wish the working noise wasn't so loud. I know some people enjoy it, but I find it really hard to hear. Its not so bad when its quieter in the background like it has been in previous videos, but I could feel that sandpaper bit in my teeth I'm sorry, I do love the vidoes so much! I just couldn't get through this one with the sound on, which is a shame because I love hearing your voice and your process! Its just too rough on those of us with auditory problems 😅 also, the pony turned out beautifully! The color matching was great; I'm so glad the new technique worked out!
hello 💜 I'm sorry I completely forget where you live while commenting this, but in North America they sell "magic erasers" which is basically extremely fine sanding material in a sponge form, you can get them cheap at dollar stores and if you use them wet, it's like extremely fine wet sanding. maybe this could help with pony stains in the future 😊
Great video with soothing music, as usual! I think that your color matching skill is good, actually, and even if you decide that you don't like the result but you also don't want to redo it, I think she would look great with some white patches and a white muzzle. :) And the hair looks great - and has a very luxurious shine!
I haven't commented in a while, but I figured I would let you know I'm still around and enjoying your vids! I love how posey turned out! Even if the color matching isn't perfect, she looks so fabulous and grateful for all the care you gave her. :)
Fun fact: Keytones make your breath, urine, and stool have a very distinctive chemical smell and it kind of evaporates when it hits your nose giving it a kind of cooling sensation. If you have kidney problems or diabetes you can develop ketoacidosis where your body becomes acidic from it and it's actually quite dangerous and can damage your organs or even cause death if not treated. I have a metabolic acidosis from a kidney disease, and diabetes (my body is a mess tbh), so if I notice a little keytone smell it's not that bad, I probably ate too much meat or didn't eat enough food in general (if I'm nauseous from migraines I might not eat for 24 hrs), but if the smell is strong I need medical treatment.
I think she turned out great and its good to have a learning experience. If you ever watch videos of people who restore paintings professionally, they fill in the color on missing spots so that if you are up close you can see where the original artist painted and the repair. That is what your girl reminds me of.
Try doing your color matching right after you have the pony clean. That way you can do color swatches and have time for them to dry down and use the dried swatches for comparison before you start painting. :) I'm always so happy when I see you post a new video. These are so much fun to watch!

the restoration on that ponys face was impressive, i wish i had kinda kept the ones the dog decided to use as a chew toy now. colour matching especially to yellow is difficult and yes it tends to dry either very yellow or with a brown tint to it, so dont get too hung up on that, just takes pratice is all. over all a good restoration, maybe look for some thicker hair next time. i have a vintage Uk poney she is also yellow but has little ribbons and bows on her hip, she is one of the few surviving thing from my childhood, her hair is looking a little tired it has lost all of its bounce, and i quite possibly gave her a hair cut on the mane at some point in time, i had been attempting to remove the "ware" marks from general handeling/playing for ages, i didnt even think to use oxi im going ot give her a nice hot bath today hope she comes out looking nice and clean.

Your videos are so fun!! I love restoring things and am just getting into toys (specifically, just ponies) as a hobby, so I am learning a lot from you and defer to your knowledge! But wondering (like a few others I see here) if you have tried magic erasers, because they work really well and possibly faster in place of maybe the OxyClean step and are less risky to the cutie marks etc. than acetone. OK, off to try milliput sculpting for the first time :))
You should try foam clay. I use it to mold men hair on dolls. It has flexibility and you can sand it. It paints a lot better than apoxie sculpt. I love how you do the tails. She looks so much better!
I wonder if a powdered pigment might work better with the milliput? Like a resin colorant, since multipurpose is an apoxy? Just a thought. Great video as always. It made my day to be able to spend some time with you in video form!
I'm not sure if it will be better (it may very well be worse than what you already do) but have you considered using melamine foam sponges (or a magic eraser, same thing different name) in your sanding process? Since its basically like fine sandpaper but soft and squishy I'm wondering if it might be easier in areas like the pony's mouth. 🤔
Thank you so much for your work! I just acquired a small lot of G1 MLPs (not repros) and a few of them have some bad chew marks on them. Their manes seem to be okay but their tails have rust stains from the washer. Is there a way I can fix the stains without removing the entire head and replacing the hardware or should I take the risk and behead them? Thanks so much!
i think this thin hair would actually work a lot better with the tight curls, since it isnt as bulky it would not be quite so voluminous once the curls are in(a problem i think you said you have with over-curling hair sometimes)
Love watching these restorations! It actually inspired me to do a semi custom pony based on my studio colors/logo and I have 5 more planned, spooky themed of course. I do have one question though, how do you keep the pony hair from getting all frizzy? I washed the hair with conditioner and once it dried out it was okay for a week or two but then it began frizzing out.
The amount of toys I just gave away or was told I had to get rid of because they were broken, past their time or destroyed... I had a few g1 MLP toys that I'd painted with nail varnish, given haircuts to and loved thoroughly. Would eat a horse to be able to get them restored as an adult but ALAS they're long gone
You need to look for something called a sanding sponge and try chalk pastels to color with makeup brushes dry. Then top with Mr Super Clear to seal between layers.
Do you have any suggestions on painting the glitter symbols? I’ve been using vallejo paints to repair eyes but there’s no glitter vallejo paint as far as I know. I feel like craft glitter paint will be too thin?
I don’t know if you’re experienced with colours out of these videos, but paint always dry darker. So try to make it lighter than the actual pony & it should be fine. Good luck in the future! 🥰
Would a polymer cosclay flexible clay work to fix a pony? It’s still flexible after baking. I don’t know if the pony could handle the ovenheat or if you could glue the fixed part to the pony.it would keep the plastic feel of the pony better if it could work.
