I have the Google Pixel 8 here and in today's video I'll be showing you how to root this Android smartphone with the help of a superuser tool called Magisk.
#android #pixel8 #pixel8pro #googlepixel8 #googlepixel8pro #magisk #androidroot #rootandroid
For those of you who own the Pixel 8 Pro, you should be aware that the steps I show you today will work exactly the same on your device. So it doesn't matter if you have the smaller or the larger variant. Both devices can be rooted by following this video.
But before we can begin, you must have some things setup ahead of time.
For example, we can't root this phone if the bootloader is locked, so the first we need to do is unlock the bootloader.
We then need to sideload the Magisk application to the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro.
Now, we also need to download the Google firmware that matches the version we currently have installed.
This will be a ZIP file that needs to be extracted to your desktop or laptop PC.
Now you'll find another ZIP file within this firmware.
And you can either extract the contents of that file, or you can just go inside the file and pick out the init_boot.img file.
This is the file that needs to be patched with Magisk and flashed to our Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro before we are able to gain root access.
So let's take this file and copy it to our smartphone.
Now we're going to open up the Magisk app.
Tap on the Install button up here.
And then choose the Select and Patch a File option.
Browse to whatever folder we stored the init_boot.img file so that we can select it.
That will load the file into Magisk and begin the patching process.
You'll see here that the app has given us a different file labeled magisk_output.
We need to take that file and copy it back to our PC.
Before we switch our focus back to the computer, though, we need to boot the Pixel 8 into Fastboot Mode.
Just like before, I have already shown you how this is done so if you're not familiar then, again, check down in the video description below for a link to that video.
Here is a Windows PowerShell that has been opened in that same folder. But you could also do this in a Command Prompt or Terminal window as well.
We need to type out the following command. . .
fastboot flash init_boot filename.img
and we can actually just begin typing out the filename Magisk and then press the TAB button on the keyboard to autocomplete it for us.
We simply need to press the enter button on the keyboard to execute this command and we should get two OK messages as a result.
With that file being flashed successfully, we simply need to select the START option within Fastboot Mode
And then wait for Android to boot back up.
The first thing you'll want to do is open up Magisk to check and see if there are any additional setup instructions required. As sometimes you get a message saying the phone needs to be rebooted again in order to fully root the phone.
But if you don't see that, and you see a version of Magisk is installed from the top card here, then you have completed the Pixel 8 root tutorial.
I also recommend downloading a free root checker like this to confirm that the root access prompt is working properly.

Thank you. I was going crazy by trying to root a I did on pixel 6. Didn't use init boot but boot. Watched your video to learn that for pixel 8 as well as typing init boot in command then press tab. Good learning experience

Your video is comprehensive, concise and to the point. You make them sound extremely easy for us noobs to do them and it really helps to have a child like yours with such a professional approach to your work be shared with others like myself. Big love kindness. Regards, Richard UK
Great tutorial thanks.
Does this method work with grapheneos as well?
This worked great. Can you do a video on how to update the OS without losing it after all that work?
yes! I have that very video in the works right now. it should be uploaded to the channel sometime this week. please subscribe to the channel and you'll be alerted to when it is available :)
bro you're a hero for doing this
great tutorial! could you possibly make a video on how to update firmware when a new security update releases? thank you :)

Hey what are about Android and Saftey Updates can i just install them like on an unrooted device?
I have an Pixel 8 Pro
Does this still work on Android 14, (jan,5 security update & Nov, 1 hoogle play system update) kernel version 5.15.110 ?
hello mate i cant find my build number in the Factory Images mine is from january 2024 and there only sshow 2023 images what can i do wait until they up the new images?
Why use Root Checker? Isn't Magisk, enough? Just like ChainFire's SuperUser back in the day, you'd just check the logs, right? Or any other root manager. Just thought I'd ask.
I recommend it just so you can test to make sure the superuser pop-up appears when an application requests root access
please help me I can't download factory image for pixel 8 pro 14.0.0 (UD1A.231105.004, Nov 2023),open the link show e're sorry...

Hi my magisk patcheed is but init_boot failed after the flash. Any idea? Please
I've got the pixel 8 pro
what error message did you see when you tried?
can I activate call recording on pixel 8
Can i use a mac to root my pixel 8?
Can you make a video on how to pass saftey net fix on the latest android version of samsung galaxy s10+
I have a new video coming out today (in like an hour) that shows how this is done with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Try the steps I mention there and see if it works on the S10+ as well
Nha That Doesnt Work On Samsung S10+ Can You Make A Video On Android 12 2023 Version I Cant Pass Saftey Net And My Device Is Also Not Certified So Any Help Is Welcomed@@ExplainingAndroid
Does this work for 8a as well? I'd guess it does... Can anyone confirm before I lock my phone into a bootloop? 😁
Hello. Thank you so much. Is twrp available for Pixel 8 pro. If yes, how can we install it?
sadly, the pixel 5 was the last Pixel phone to receive official support for TWRP
Can you do a video for installing zyhist or the other one?
what other one?
@@ExplainingAndroid the process to install lsposed
Hi, `fastboot flash init_boot` fails:
Sending 'init_boot_b' (8192 KB) OKAY [ 0.235s]
Writing 'init_boot_b' FAILED (remote: 'command (flash:) is not allowed when locked')
fastboot: error: Command failed
you need to unlock the bootloader first. then follow this tutorial
so bad. after flash with magisk file and start the phone it bring a totally new system and delete every thing you have
So will banking apps still work?
Some can be quite picky right?
ALL of my banking and credit card apps work. but you're right, some of them can be quite picky
some will refuse to work UNTIL the phone passes a safetynet test.
I haven't made a video about this for the pixel 8 series yet, but this one should work exactly the same - ruclips.net/video/yaeAz_8OsJg/видео.html
@@ExplainingAndroid Great thanks... HTC One M7 was the last one I rooted and flashed a LOT... not much since then lol... 10 years ago
@@Garrett1974 I missed out on the M7, but I was able to use the M8 for quite a while. it was such a fantastic phone (I miss htc)

Ah man forgot I had an m8. That phone was wicked. Memory unlocked
How can i unroot the device ?
I have a pixel 7pro and I have installed magisk 26.4, everything is fine until I want to hide magis from my bank application, but zygisk does not work
Settings > Turn on "Enforce Deny List"
Click " Configure Deny List"
Choose the applications you'd like to hide
Do not only check the box, some applications have multiple sections and will need to be "switched" on to affect them
Be sure to select the application, itselefl to viewthis
try putting Magisk pacher on the same system as Samsung S9 and S9+ without cmd
I'll definitely try that!
when I download the firmware from google I don't the the .img file just the payload.bin
make sure you're downloading the "factory image" for the firmware and not the "full ota" firmware. and that you're downloading it from this website - developers.google.com/android/images
How do you afford all these phones? Jealous. But I have pixel 7 pro with scratches and my camera flash light won't even work even after factory reset. My warranty expired. 😢
it's a work expense for me (youtube is my daily job)
if you have tried a factory data reset and it still doesn't work, the only thing I can suggest is using the Android Flash Tool to re-image the filesystem with a freshly downloaded firmware
that would truly eliminate any software issues that could be possible. if it still doesn't work after that, then it sounds like a hardware issue
I wish someone would do a video on rooting the Verizon Pixel 8 Pro.
verizon blocks bootloader unlocking, so you can't root it without an exploit to the Android filesystem
@@ExplainingAndroidwell that blows, I thought someone figured out to root the Verizon Pixel 8 Pro and figured out how to unlock the bootloader.
i could look into it, but the chances are highly unlikely. and if one becomes available, Google is sure to patch it quickly@@BlakeHanback01

vpn by google one stopped working, any way to fix?
hey realies, I'm not sure if that's because you're rooted and if so, whether there is a workaround since I don't subscribe to google one (nor do I use their vpn service), but I will be happy to try and research a solution to this issue, but I will need you to join the Direct Support tier of the RUclips membership system - www.youtube.com/@ExplainingAndroid/join
After that, you can use the Support Thread I created (which helps me to follow up along the way) and it will allow me to dedicate some time and attempt to work through the issue with you

Is the pixel 8 pro dual sim(2 physical sims)?
Nah, single sim + eSIM
Will any of these steps wipe my phone? Thanks
Yes, as soon as you unlock the bootloader, your device gets wiped. After that, you don't need to worry about another wipe.
I'm on Verizon. Can I root my phone or am I screwed? I hope someone can tell me soon?
you'll need to return it and get one from the google store (if you want to unlock the bootloader and root it)
@@ExplainingAndroidI cracked my screen.
Screw Verizon!!
Would this type of root also work with a One Plus device. Specifically the Open?
does it have a Snapdragon chip? can the bootloader be unlocked?
bad, you give us the run around forcing us to go watch all your other videos making this process longer and confusing, provided no links, and skipped a lot of small instruction. got an error each time.
providing no links?
What about VERIZON??? WHY NOT MENTION, which makes this click bait?
what about verizon? why would i mention a model that cannot be rooted because it cannot be bootloader unlocked.
this wasn't a "can i root my pixel 8 phone" video. it was a video showing how to gain root access. I showed how to root the Pixel 8 phones that are possible.
if you're on verizon, you'll want to buy the phone from Google (not Verizon)
