I have a friend that swears by Google maps. First they track your every move, second they have a law where law enforcement can look at your travel history in the database, and they always send you where the street is close or leave you 5 blocks away or ahead of were the hell you asked to go. Do not use google maps if you don’t have a good sense of direction
I went back to Montana recently and my mom picked me up from the airport around midnight. Her truck broke down on the way back to her place and we couldn’t get a tow truck that late at night. So we were stranded for about 4 hours until the reservation police saw us and luckily he drove us to my mom’s place. I’ll stick around civilization thank you very much. No road trips for me.

Always download the offline map for the area you're driving in, and for surrounding areas just in case. You never know when you'll lose service and the map will go wonky, giving weird directions. Also, always fill up to full for any road trip.
why would u only gas up 1/3 tank of gas? i mean i routinely run my gas tank till the light goes on, but i am in a city that has a gas station every couple of blocks... you are traveling in the desert...
It's not a stupid trip if executed with even the slightest modicum of common sense. It's totally doable to just wing it and do the trip alone with mindful assessment of resources, such as gasoline, and regeneration of them as needed. But trying to save money on gasoline was definitely the illogical approach; instead, refilling to a full tank of gasoline is the logical approach--an investment for survival. What good is it to save a few bucks if you end up dying and unable to capitalise on those savings?
borgoat12 ...I didn’t say it was a “stupid trip”... My comment implied that going on a trip alone and unprepared is stupid...in other words, some of the decisions that she made were “stupid”.

It's generally a better idea to stay with shelter, food and water in a situation like this. She assumed help may be on the way and leaving supplies behind isn't what you want to do (also spotting her car and a help sign is easier than just a single person). It's daunting to set out into nothingness to maaaaybe get help. You can't carry that much water with you.
@Los - But that point just....isn’t. How does that save her a few bucks on gas? She’s still gonna need at least another full tank to get home. That’s why many people are saying she staged it for attention - Fugazi. But I don’t wanna pin that on the girl. I give her credit for being that stupid.
I liked the GPS company’s statement: “drivers to exercise common sense” and this girl goes out into the wilderness with almost an empty gas tank and no reserves. Brilliant.
Amber is such a strong soul, I could not imagine the way I’d feel to be stuck in the dessert for 5 DAYS! Feeling hopeless, feeling and believing that maybe no one is looking for you , having to record a goodbye video to your family… and obviously the physical damage. Gosh what a blessing
Aneliz H. As long as she downloaded the map of the area ahead of time she would have been fine. I travel to go hiking in the mountains and that’s what the group i go with does. We’ve lost connection and still have a route even when we made a wrong turn.
Other than the terrible decision to only buy 1/3 tank of gas when traveling to remote locations in a desert, she was very smart to have an ample supply of food and water, and then the common sense to write a note stating that she left on foot in certain direction.
@@joea3936 lots of people do that but they damn sure try to be prepared and not intentionally put 1/3 tank of gas in their car in some mythical attempt to save money then proceed down a very long backwoods dirt road and not have sense enough to turn around before there gas runs out

so this lady has enough to survive a week and drove 1 hour from the road and instead of walking up with water she decided to chill in her car for 5 days seems legit
I did a road trip through the desert during the summer and since I'm so paranoid, I had two cases of water, some MRE's, a satellite phone, a car shade that was silver and very reflective. I also stopped at just about every gas station and topped off. Yeah it's paranoid to pack like this but I wasn't taking any chances.
Right. You were prepared. What I don’t understand is why she never walked back down the road? She was planning to do Havasupai Falls , which is a 10-mile hike from camp, at least. So, she should’ve had enough water, food, & gear to do that hike round-trip, which is at least 20 miles, plus any time you spend at the Falls.
"It is important for drivers to keep in mind that GPS Devices are to be used as navigational aid only it is the responsibility of drivers to exercise common sense." Google is saying y'all dumb....😂😂😂
I think she got way too spooked before thinking clearly. Maybe thirsty and hungry already...... I would have personally packed a bag full of water and walk back down the road
Phones do use satellites. You have to have cell service to download the local map, and satellite reception to triangulate your position. I’ve had a few times using google maps on rainy days that the phone said, “satellite lost”
Please, if you’re traveling to an unfamiliar place out in the middle of nowhere fill your gas tank to the top, tell people where you’re going, how you’re getting there, when you plan to be back, and always have an emergency first aid kit. It’s better to be over prepared and not use it than to desperately need something you don’t have.
Meowcaster TCG I was lucky to be taught to always fill up if you are driving in an unfamiliar area. I'm in no way judging her, just realizing if I wasn't taught I wouldn't know. She did plan out food and water pretty well.
Fuel is cheaper than water where I live but when i am driving in the afternoon on highroads and near desert I never fill the whole tank up because it reaches 55 degrees Celsius and the fuel littrealy boils and overheats so I try not too
I'm going to share some wisdom my grandfather shared with me when I was a little kid. He said, "one day you will be driving & I want you to remember something for me, it's just as easy to keep your car full as it is to keep it empty. Fill it once and then use what gas money you collect from your friends to keep it full, rather than trying to get a couple bucks here and there to go somewhere and then be on E again. That way you will always have a full tank in the event of an emergency.
I did a road trip cross country and went “off road” more than a few times. When you live your entire life in a city, you don’t always realize that the majority of the country if filled with dead spots… no cell service, no internet. I always had an actual GPS and paper maps, I would always research and study routes/trails before the trip and my number one rule when going out into any remote area…. FILL THE GAS TANK AT EVEY GAS STATION! Sometimes you won’t see gas stations for over 200 miles depending on how remote you are
Annoying is when your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, despite a full tank. So, I'd pack plenty of water, food, a compass and a paper map to walk to the next cell phone receptive area. I'd walk back the exact same way I came from.
@@someone3187 Absolutely correct. Preparation is key and it’s absolutely unbelievable the amount of people who wander into the wilderness while taking zero precautions

Also you think theres a chance a family member may work there only because that was so lame even freaking dora the explorer is laughing at this sheltered kid. Also didn't they say at first she was meeting friends the story never said if they were worried so see its made up.
Given how smart this young lady was about everything after she was stranded, I'm actually surprised that she only put 1/3 tank of gas in and also that she drove so long and far down an obviously very isolated road with very little fuel. But we all make mistakes; at least she'll have the opportunity to live and learn from this one. It sounds like she was very strong physically and mentally; I'm sure those attributes helped enormously. And she clearly has a beautiful relationship with her father; knowing how much a person is loved and would be missed gives us all extra strength! I'm so happy to know this young woman survived and hope everyone has a wonderful evening!
Lol she wasn’t smart about anything. She already had plenty of food and water. All she did was write help lol. Not fill her tank up, drive alone in the desert. She’s far from smart
@@jamesjames6792 I thought that for someone her age that she did rather well, not filling up her tank and driving so far down an obviously isolated road aside (I definitely agreed both of the issues you specifically mentioned). But once she had to stop she did the right things. She stayed calm and didn't panic the way many would have; she stayed in or near her car the whole five first days until- and only after seeing just the one truck all week- she finally decided that staying put might not be the best plan for her after all. She rationed her food and water from day one; and made sure to leave a note beside her vehicle detailing the direction she was walking when she did take off on foot looking for a cellphone signal or- even better!- a possible rescue. When she did find a brief, fleeting signal, she didn't waste it with tears or jumbled up babble spoken in panic but gave the operator the best description of her location she could manage in the short time she had before her phone lost the signal. She also thought to use the rocks, sticks, etc she had at hand to write "HELP" in very large letters close to where she was stranded. All in all I do agree with you that she should have known better than to only put a few dollars worth of fuel in her tank or to drive so far down that lonely road but after making those mistakes I feel like she did better than most young women would have to assist in her survival and rescue. Hope you have a beautiful day!

but she was just trying to save money by putting 1/3 tank. there was plenty of time to get more later after her paycheck for hauling rocks in the desert.
How did she do everything wrong? I'm sure the majority of the population would've trusted Google Maps, went to look for cell service, left a sign in case anyone came to the ez, she even counted the hours of how long she was out there. You Sir are a Dumbass. you don't go out for a walk in the Arizona desert. with temperatures reaching 115 on avg no shade you will require at least 3L of water an hour. Not to mention the possibility of heat stroke setting in within 1 hour of hiking with no shade. doesn't matter how much water you drink then, your body is overheating.
Please Go on and tell the former Special forces SGT How he is a tool. Explain to me the guy who has survived 15 days in a desert (Arizona (Fort Huachuca) and New Mexico (Fort Bliss) Alone with only 2 gallons of water in what we call SERE training Having to hike over 100 miles at night! Not day. Are you going to say she should have hiked the road which she could have been 11 miles or 25 miles maybe even 1 mile to get cell phone reception? great plan but what about bringing enough water to combat the heat? what about the constant Sun beating down on you? heating your body to temps? causing you severe exhaustion from just the constant light and heat? Should she risk the chance of heat stroke kicking in? That's where people die from there internal body temps heating above 104 degrees! It doesn't feel like you are that hot either. It feels like you just got really tired and needs to rest so you sit down and soon your body just stops moving from the confusion as your brain shuts down. Then you die from the sun cooking you from the inside out and all you did was stop to take a rest. But what really cool is? When you survive to sunset and it goes dark. Then your body freezes and you die of hypothermia. cause we both know a desert at night can reach 40 degrees easy, and the ground has been known to freeze water on summer days. But you knew that! I mean you were going to school the tool right? So i'll be waiting for your rebuddle. if you ever gone hiking in the grand canyon all visitors are required to take if your lost how to survive packet. It clearly states travel only in morning and evening hours rest during the hotest and coolest parts of the day
dead pat She got stranded in March. The average high temperature (daytime temperature) in northern Arizona, which is where she was, during March IS 58 FREAKING DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. Also, she had 5 days worth of food and a few days of drink with her. SHE COULD HAVE *EASILY* WALKED THE 35 MILES BACK TO THE MAIN ROAD DURING THE DAY. And this is demonstrated by the fact that she did eventually walk 12 miles back toward the main road to where she could get cell reception. By the way, it's "rebuttal" not "rebuddle".
I'm glad she's okay but I do want to say: never go somewhere alone (especially the desert), always fill up all the way, don't rely on maps use solar powered GPS and also a physical map, carry flares, and always have back up water and food. These are just the bare necessities. Glad Amber made it out of there, the desert is cruel and unforgiving.

Sounds stupid but I don't use parking garages and I just happened to rent a car from an airport that was parked in a parking garage
You can tell a lot about someone’s level of intellect by their compulsion to insert “lol”, “lol” into negative comments of small-minded criticism.
Intelligent folks see that and instantly you’ve lost all credibility as you look more like a nervous or insecure child rather than a mature adult with something of intelligence and substance to add. If I were an immature childish type, I’d add some “lol”s to this comment in a childish effort to belittle you more than you’ve already belittled yourself. But I’m not interested in looking like an immature child making light of someone else’s mistake. I’ll be the adult simply shining a light on yours and hopefully you’ll learn a little something and reconsider your childish use of the “lol”s when criticizing someone else. Especially where criticism wasn’t due.
@@jamesjames6792 she had enough bottles of water to drink 3 a day for a week and a half. That’s one thing that I don’t get. I would have also brought several gas cans filled with gas, plenty of food, or simply juts turned around.
Sometimes you won’t see gas stations for over 200 miles depending on how remote you are
Why would you fill the tank if daddy can pay for that if you run out?
You mean, we often forget? 😉
Annoying is when your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, despite a full tank. So, I'd pack plenty of water, food, a compass and a paper map to walk to the next cell phone receptive area. I'd walk back the exact same way I came from.

God was with her the whole time. What a very beautiful soul she has...❤️
There is no better school than life!
It makes us humble and teaches us lots a values!
yep, it also cripples us, traumatizes us and slowly kills us each and everyday. such is life I guess.
Or you mess up big time drive into the desert without gas, maps, or an inkling of common sense and die from stagering stupidity. In that case it's less of a humbling lesson and more of nature saying, "Organisms like her help to keep the food chain moving, primarily by acting as carrion".
The part where the Dad said he was looking for her in the wrong place broke my heart. I don’t want to imagine what that poor daddy felt.

If you are traveling it's always a good idea to let somebody know each morning/night where you are currently and what your destination for that day/next is, even if you are traveling with a group. That would atleast help your loved one's look for you in in right place...and wouldn't have to say what this dad said- 'was looking in the wrong place'. Not just getting stranded, natural disasters happen, landslides or flash floods can happen and roads can get cut off...your entire group might need rescuing.
I do maintenance in a building and If I'm up on the roof or in a suite dealing with electrical I always let someone know what I'm doing. If my trucks there in front and it's getting dark, look for me. I may be down.
Why would you even start a trip like that if you don’t have gas money? 🤷♀️
I am not judging this child and being hateful is unacceptable.
but she was just trying to save money by putting 1/3 tank. there was plenty of time to get more later after her paycheck for hauling rocks in the desert.

Wow, she did nearly everything right, except for the gas thing. Good on her for improvising.
Geneva GAS.
Geneva what?she did everything wrong
How did she do everything wrong? I'm sure the majority of the population would've trusted Google Maps, went to look for cell service, left a sign in case anyone came to the ez, she even counted the hours of how long she was out there. She did everything right, except for not getting enough gas for the road and not making calls to her parents before she went on the road
Gosh his dad is such a wuss crying like that.

Ummm wasn’t it a straight road? So when she came to the fence she should have turned around, drive until the gas finished and slept in the car, waited for sunlight then walk back to the highway or where she would at least get cellphone service. That wouldn’t have taken more than 1 day to do. My gosh 🤦🏽♂️
You sir, have complete and total common sense. I can't speak for the woman involved in the video above.
You Sir are a Dumbass. you don't go out for a walk in the Arizona desert. with temperatures reaching 115 on avg no shade you will require at least 3L of water an hour. Not to mention the possibility of heat stroke setting in within 1 hour of hiking with no shade. doesn't matter how much water you drink then, your body is overheating.
dead pat Do you just want to get it over with and admit that you are a complete tool or do you want me to bother to explain why?
I cracked a tear at the end when her dad was overcome with emotion.
