They're very good shells but I found the QC to be pretty bad so they need work to get the most out of them. I had a really tough time trying to tune the 14" floor tom without getting that papery buzz during the sustain. The bearing edges weren't even close to true. I ended up getting all the edges recut and now it sounds just as good as a kit 4x its price. It's crazy what a high-end Gretsch or Ludwig kit costs these days.
I bought a Gretsch Catalina Club Rock kit not long ago in sizes 26" bass, 14"×6.5" snare, 13" rack tom, 16" and 18" floor toms. I got them for the ridiculously low price of $250 and they're still in like new condition. They have 3 different sparkle colors, gold, champagne, and silver. From what I've gathered about them they were a limited run in those sizes and were made to compete with the Ludwig John Bonham reissue kits. I also have the Ludwig Bonham reissue kit in clear vistalite. Both kits sound different but equally great. I would imagine over time this kit is going to go up in value considerably.
Your tuning skills with those stock heads is exceptional. I have the Blue Satin Flame kit with the 20 inch bass drum. I love it. Changed the batter heads and it sounds amazing.
Could you please do a future video discussing how you record your drums? Microphone choices and placement plus mixing approach. I really enjoy listening to your demos. Great playing too of course!
I have the same kit and love it. I did a few mods though as I had trouble tuning the 12x8 tom since it rests against the rubber piece on the suspension mount. I found that choked the drum so purchased a drumfactorydirect suspension mount which eliminated anything touching the shell and the choking effect. Also playing around I replaced the snare throw off with one from inde drums. I previously had a Gretsch kit from 1979 and to be honest I like this one better. The hardware is better and I found it easier to tune.
Brings back some memories. I had a Gretsch 5-piece set back in the 70s - Moonglow Satin Flame. They were butt ugly, but when the light hit them, they blossomed and they just lit up. I think it was Blakey who had basically the same set (5-pice, same finish) at one time. Man, I miss those drums.
I love this kit 👏👏 It’s the same kit I have, but in satin walnut glaze. My kit is still in the boxes because I’m still trying to get the money to buy my cymbals 😀😀
My grandpa played one of these when he was 18 and now I’m playing them! The are some differences: 2 tom toms, 2 floor toms, silver chrome snare and an 18” kick. All matching
Your grandpa most probably played a Gretsch USA custom, which is of the highest quality, and nowhere near these drums. However for the price, these drums sound great and are good quality !
Great looking and sounds really good to me Noah. Peace and Blessings! I’m sharing with an ol’ buddy of mine from NWI, so maybe he’ll come check them out.
Hi guys, I bought Gretsch catalina club 20"/12"/14" and I have a problem with rack tom. The mounting system totally kill sound of tom. If i hold tom in the air - rubber part of mounting doesn`t touch the tom, it sounds really great, but If thirubber part pushes to the tom, it sounds really bad without sustain. Do you have some ideas how to fix it without using snare stand?
I tried with a cympad between the rubber and the shell... it kinda worked somewhat. However, I ended up putting the tom on a snare stand with TNR booty shakers, now the tom sings 🎵 Edit: When I just got my Catalina Club Set, I tuned the toms high and it sounded great. I only noticed the chocked sound when I tuned the toms lower. BTW, I also switched out the legs on the floor tom (with pearl rubbers/feet, not the whole legs). Now the kit sounds great in all tunings.
From a previous comment I made ** I have the same kit and love it. I did a few mods though as I had trouble tuning the 12x8 tom since it rests against the rubber piece on the suspension mount. I found that choked the drum so purchased a drumfactorydirect suspension mount which eliminated anything touching the shell and the choking effect. **
Wow… love both tunings but the first one sounds incredible… also… I know the reason to do these Video’s is to showcase what is available for sale but was wondering if you would showcase your personal Sets one of these days as a special feature and why you chose them after working with virtually every brand of Drums..That of course is for everyone at the shop. Great job as always…
I did a personal setup video a few months back with my 60’s Gretsch in moonglow, we’ll definitely have more! Steve Jr. has a really cool set that I’d love to see in here, I have an idea of what Steve Sr. would pick but we’ll see - Same with Jake. Fun idea, thanks!
Stock heads here! Honestly, I think they are cheaper than they used to be, but most of us swap them out soon or later anyway. The batter heads are worse off than the resonant sides - something about the coating, so changing those will be a massive improvement. My only beef with these drums all things considered, everything else I’m a big fan of. Cheers!
Just bought one of these kits yesterday. Incredible sounding kit.
One of those kits, that would do very well in a blind test, against the more expensive drums..
It’s been done.A guy named Julian archer on RUclips
Catalinas sound as good as drums well past their price range.

@@spence0nasty I just ordered one, blue satin flame !!

😎👍 NOAH!!!
I hope you had a fun vacation bro!
I played a Catalina Birch years ago and was very impressed with the sound and finish. This set is equally impressive!
Another fine demo. Excellent sound. And that after-beat hi-hat that seamlessly falls into place (twice!) is so cool...
After a lifetime of playing nothing but Ludwigs I purchased a Catalina Club about 5 yrs ago in blue sparkle. I am EXTREMELY happy with it.
Absolutely phenomenal demo. You made that kit sing equally in both tunings.
Your tuning skills with those stock heads is exceptional. I have the Blue Satin Flame kit with the 20 inch bass drum. I love it. Changed the batter heads and it sounds amazing.
I just got mine! I use calftones on them and wow they sound good
@@willbrooksy478 I bet they do!!!
its morning and time to play this beautiful demo, love you all

Sound wise as good as it gets…beautiful quality and design!
Love your drumming 😎
Fantastic playing. High tuning definitly suits the kit much better
The Catalina Club should be on the legendary kit list...if there were such a thing 👌
Wow ! What beautiful tone 👍
Does this kit have die-cast bass drum claws? Great sounding and looking kit!
Really nice, do happen to know your lugs range hrtz thanks the low and the highs! Sounds really good!

Amazing quality content always! 🥁

@@noahice righteo! Thanks!
Ohh that high tuning is nice
Sounds as good and top line kit.
Yellow drums are really cool 😎 yellow satin flame 🤔
Is it me or less expensive drums sounds more lively than the pricer sets?

Nice set
We all drum on a yellow satin flame
Catalina Club
Yellow satin flame
Is this the 18 inch or 20 inch kick drum?
Wish Ludwig would offer something as good as this in this price range.
didn’t realize Rivers Cuomo could kill it on the drums
Noah, can y I can hardly hear your intro.
Mahogany??
