    Such a sick track as usual. Also love to see some new interesting little bits in this one. What are your thoughts on the M8? I've never used a tracker before but I am enchanted by the idea of a pocket sized groovebox

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  10 месяцев назад +1

      I love the M8's ability to structure songs. It has this nested pattern/phrase/song structure that makes it really easy to set up longer arrangements. It also has great sounding synths. The biggest drawback is navigating all the pages, especially in sound editing. I wish it had more in the way of performance. But as a pocket device you can make music on? Pretty awesome. Excellent place to start sequencing a project.

    Where did you get this snazzy looking MSW-810? I don't see this version with the sequencer anywhere - not even the manufacturer's website. Fabulous jam though, I didn't know the Impact had such a great punchy sound. All the synths play well with and off of each other.

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  10 месяцев назад

      The DBI is underrated, in my opinion. Really comes alive when you keep the decay times down.
      And this MSW-810 run was earlier and short-lived. Honestly, it's the 303 sequencer, which is famously obtuse, so no harm in life without it! This was the one available to me so I snagged it. Sounds great.

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  10 месяцев назад +1

      Good question. I've noticed this with a bunch of MIDI setups that you'll observe small fluctuations on the tempo indicator. Might just be par for the course when it comes to 5-pin? And thanks!

    • @midicakemidi
      @midicakemidi 10 месяцев назад +1

      MIDI sequencers, including DAWs, output subtly irregular clock messages (particularly over USB). There is variation at the millisecond level. MIDI is a serial protocol, so each message is sent and received one after the next. Each message takes around 1ms to read so there's often a little delay introduced when they are read. It's not usually noticeable to human ears though.
      Devices receiving the clock signals have to calculate the incoming tempo (BPM) based on the time difference between the clock ticks. At 83bpm, that is once every 30 milliseconds, so a variation of 1ms represents a 4% difference in tempo. and that causes the BPM calculation to fluctuate.
      To combat this, devices (like ARP) often have a smoothing function to reduce the flickering tempo. Even then they are just trying there best to calculate the tempo at 33 ticks per second. That's why it wanders on ARP and it looks like the Brute has a different calculation algorithm, so it fluctuates differently.
      It's only a display issue though. Individual clock ticks that are long or short won’t make any noticeable difference to the timing as the next tick will correct it. Also, with ARP (and I assume other devices) the MIDI message processing has ultimate priority, to keep the music as in-sync as possible. Less important functions like updating the display have a lower priority.

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  10 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks so much for this explanation! And yes, I never feel it (I had no idea about the smoothing!), so it's only ever been a visual anomaly.

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  5 месяцев назад

      Yes, just a lot of inputs into the interface. I user a mixer/audio interface combo, which allows you to jam (using it as a mixer) and then record (sending audio to the DAW) when you're ready. I definitely recommend any of the mixer / audio interface devices when you're starting out. The Soundcraft MTK series, Tascam Model series, or Allen & Heath Qu series are all great. Best of luck with your synth journey!
