They can reuse almost everything they already manufactured (new base model is basically just stock of the old models) and dont break compatibility with most stuff most people care about and make the experience a lot better for everyone. You can install windows on Deck. It’s super easy. I didn’t even have to wipe the internal storage. It runs off a SD card. The only problem is SD cards are slow AF like an old ass laptop HDD. It makes the Steam deck feel slower than it really is. But I was able to play Starfield on it. It was playable at the lowest settings if you don’t mind 20 to 25 FPS.
Using windows is not so bad on Deck it opens up games that are not supported by Steam OS and Game Pass games. That’s how I played Starfield, through Game Pass.
The only thing is the Steam Deck is so slow. Sometimes painfully slow. Battery life of original is 2 hours tops to 60 minutes for high demanding games.

One thing I think needs mentioning is the significance of the 90 Hertz screen, not because a lot of games will be running at 90, but because a lot will be running at 40 or 45. The Steam Deck community has largely embraced the "golden 40" as a frame and refresh rate that is not that much more intensive to run than 30, but goes halfway to 60 in terms of frametimes, making it the optimal experience for games where hitting a native 60 isn't possible.
The only problem is, you're downlocking the screen to 40 hertz for it, and so if a frame of those 40 is slightly late, you're waiting a whole 25 ms of stutter for the next one, compared to just 16.6 ms if running 30fps @ 60 hz. With a 90 hertz screen running at 80, that 40fps frame coming in slightly late is gonna halve that stutter time to 12.5 ms, which is HUGE in practice. Great choice!

The beauty of the steam deck is that a new generation of console doesn’t mean that the old turns obsolete. New titles will still run on it, just not as good. If you want to play the latest 2D indie titles on your “old” console you can! And you can for a long long time. That’s a big difference compared to traditional consoles where development stops usually within the year for most major titles and after a few years the digital store shuts down. Because the steam Deck is so open, you can use it so long as you want. Even with latest software if you’re willing to service it yourself.

Very different to my launch version anyway.
They made a revision to the sticks so the capacitive touch needs less voltage (that is why there are Gullikit HAL Sensor Sticks for A and B versions)... just nothing that ever was interesting enough to make a big news hype about it, none of the big RUclipsrs bothered with those stealth revisions either.

I think the 800p is just fine for the device. I love the direction they are going with more efficient hardware/battery economy with a focus on a console experience, consumer friendly device. Which is something the pc space is desperately needing.

Text is a little jagged on my deck, so it'd be nice to see something like 1440x900 on the 2nd gen. We were all happy with that on 13-inch laptops for a long time.

@@spacetoast7783 I think that would be nice tbh. 900p seems like the sweet spot.

Man you are wrong at every point. Trying to pack a whole computer into a body of a steam deck is highly inefficient and compromises gaming quite a bit. 800p 30 fps is a shit result and the heat and battery life are still bad. The whole idea is a fail imo when streaming from a regular PC in 4k 60fps or 120 fps is so much better and easily attainable using DLSS, and uses much less battery life.

@@MrWizardGG dude the whole point is to have a handheld gaming console that can natively run games as well as stream them. That's why people have the opinion of the playstation handheld already being a flop because its portable gaming but what... you can't leave the living room? the house? what's the point? The steam deck is portable pc gaming and the tech is only getting better.
