    Actually, Mitch admits that he doesn't do whistle tones properly; he does them on an in-breath instead of an out-breath. The person in Pentatonix with really good whistle tones is Kirstie.

    All of them, Especially Scott, when performing live will make changes to notes, melody, speed, and such, because in the beginning they were accused of using studio recordings during live performances, and lip-syncing. So now they make sure there is no doubt that it's live.

    Ben Bram is their musical arranger. Actually, I believe, he and Scott Hoying are the ones who initially came up with the idea of forming Pentatonix.

    • @Gwennedd

      Yes, they were. Ben or Scott had heard of the Sing Off competition for acapella groups and Scott wanted to enter it, so contacted Kirstie and Mitch about it. I'm presuming they said yes. Ben knew Avi a bit from a previous singing group so Avi agreed and then they had to search for a beatboxer...which proved really difficult. They eventually ran across Kevin playing cello while beatboxing on a RUclips video, asked him, but Kevin had other plans...namely doing his Pre-med. once that was done, he joined them just in time for the auditions for the contest.

      Ben Bram helps them arrange. They mostly bring him in on the more complex arrangements now, he did more of the work before... but he's never been the sole arranger. There's a reason they are all named on their two arrangement Grammys. There's at least one 2015ish video where they talk about making the basic arrangement and then sending it to Ben to flesh out, then all getting back together with Ben and then Bram turning it into sheet music.

      Scott and the others have often referred to Ben as the "sixth member" of Pentatonix.

    I like your analysis. Pentatonix is a wonderful group. I appreciate that each member developed their individual voice and also have Kirstin as my favorite. In the initial singing competition they were in it was the arrangement and use of their voices that made them rise above the competition.

    They deliberately throw in the occasional 'mistake' just to make you think they are mere mortals.

    This is the first reaction from you that I've seen, and I really appreciate the insights. I love their music and harmonies, but it's nice to have words applied to help me understand why. So interesting!

    I went to my first PTX concert this past December. They put on an amazing show, and they perform so well together.
    I also love when Kevin sings and they create the 5 part harmony. ❤❤

    Thanks for this one! Having no formal music education at all, I really like hearing from those who can explain why I enjoy PTX so much. You may want to check out a mini-doc called Recording Evergreen that shows them in the studio producing a recent-ish Christmas album. I liked your analysis very much. Peace from Ohio …

    Loved your reaction and analysis. I have heard them often say that they look to Mitch for pitch corrections. He must have perfect pitch and they rely on his strength in that. I personally didn't hear that the dissonance was a mistake. I think it was intentional in transition to another stanza. I liken Kirstens vibrato to Dolly Parton. They have a similar rate of vibrato. Thanks for your reaction.

    • @hernameispekka_Rebecca
      @hernameispekka_Rebecca Год назад +3

      Kevin is actually the only one with perfect pitch. I think they have mentioned that Kirstie has very good relative pitch. The reason they listen to Mitch is because he is very reliable in hitting the notes right (which is different but connected to hearing the notes right) and is usually still confidently belting even when unsure so at least they have something to center around even if it might not be 100% the right note.

    They are spectacular live performers. I honestly cannot here the tuning issue. Doesn't mean it's not there, cause I'm not a professional, but to my ear the dissonance match what they did in the recording. But either way, they are just such a well oiled machine! Have you watched videos from their live-streamed shows? There is one called Pentatnoix Extravaganza or something that was their christmas show, and then their Hollywood Bowl performance. Fans have put up the well recorded performances and I have a feeling you'd love reacting to those since it's straight from their actual concerts

      Like you, I couldn't really hear the mistuning. The entire arrangement makes extensive use of dissonance so it's hard to me to say "that was an error".

    On the pitch thing, they have said in the past that Kevin has perfect pitch but the trio tend to pitch themselves to Mitch who they agree has the best musical intuition in the moment.

  • @edsartistry
    @edsartistry Год назад +6

    Yes i agree there are more than just the five members, but I really think that there are more than the six that you suggest. I really think that if you are going to include the "arrangement" as a member then you must also include the "message" of the song as a member, because without a "message" the song does not exist and therefore no singers needed to sing.

    I also love Kirsten. I do however think her vibrato is too fast often. Instead of sounding resonant it can sound nervous or fluttery IMHO. Here she's pretty good though.
