I worked in retail from 17-26, it took me from an enthusiastic, positive, young man into a jaded, cynical, antisocial person. It’s all because of the same things you’ve discussed.
I remember working as a pharmacy technician and the district manager had cut every store’s pharmacy hours. This put tons of stress on every store and the pharmacy staff. Customer service and productivity went down. He did this so he could get a bigger bonus at the end of the year.

I have to agree with you. Retail jobs will definitely do a number on your mental health.
Spent 19 years in retail being abused by multiple stores and their horrendous customers. Basically being a doormat with a smile. What’s crazy is after a while I did not know how to turn it off. I would be in doormat mode 24/7. And people in my personal life began to treat me like a doormat too. It’s a slippery slope, and you have to be careful not to allow the subservient persona to bleed into your personal life.
It’s been 5 years since I left. Though I no longer allow people to wipe their feet all over me, I’m still processing the trauma.

As a retail manager, i can say i don't have a favourite (never understood picking favourites), and i spend 99 percent of my time on the shop floor helping customers and staff. I say this as just because you have had a couple bad experiences with managers, it does not mean we are all pricks it just creates a bad stereotype that people new to the workforce will carry into a job. I saw thisfirst hand in my first job as there were staff that outright just did not like any manager despite how much time the managers helped out staff where they could all because some people said on the internet retail managers are bad. Sorry, little bit of a rant there, folks.

I worked at a grocery store and got the "do you want to be a night manager?" Which I did take and instantly regretted it. They give you keys to the store, put you in charge of shipping and receiving at nights and have to manage the grocery clerks. All those extra responsibilities for an extra dollar. What pissed me off most was the other actual managers receiving all the credit when the boss comes in the morning. No thank you, no pay raise, no nothing.

i just quit my retail job 3 weeks ago, i worked night shifts and i quit without a backup job to go into due to the amount of mental and physical strain i had to endure and let me just say the type of behaviour you described from supervisors and customers is no different over here in the UK. it got to the point where i’d be physically sick regularly, going into work after being awake for 20 straight hours before coming home, throwing up my lunch and crashing in bed before waking up an hour before my shift later that night. take care of yourself people, no job is worth sacrificing your health.

    • @TAlim_1994
      @TAlim_1994 7 месяцев назад +27

Very true indeed. Health and well-being should always take priority above all else. Unless one wants to literally die of overwork, as is unfortunately a fairly common phenomenon in some mainly Asian countries, to the extent that there are even local words to describe it: it is known as _karoshi_ (過労死) in Japan, _gwarosa_ (과로사) in Korea, and _guolaosi_ (过劳死) in China. Obviously the ideal scenario would be to enjoy one's work, but if that is not possible one should at least aim to limit undue stress from work so that health is not adversely impacted. Particularly, if you find that you are excessively having to use coffee or other artificial methods just to continue to do your job for days at a time, I think that is a good cue to either try to work more reasonable hours or find another job, or potentially suffer fatal consequences.

I live In Australia, and it appears that we have a relatively similar model regarding cashiers not sitting at the register. The majority of retail stores I have visited (I have never actually worked in retail myself) do not usually have seats for the cashiers, with the exception of a supermarket chain called Aldi, which does usually have their cashiers sitting. However, it appears that the staff at the cashiers do get rotated fairly regularly, which does reduce the need for seats for individual cashiers, since they will have the opportunity to sit while not on duty.

The supervisors never harass the lazy employees who don't care, but always the hard-working and productive employees. If they notice you do well, they eventually increase your workload everyday and make it a routine, then punish you if you're unable to meet that new quota. It's a thankless and soul destroying job.

I worked in a grocery store for 4 months as a bagger when I was 16. I would work after school 4 days a week. my main duties were bagging, facing, pushing carts in, and cleaning the bathrooms at the end of the shift. I was getting $7.50 an hour. After a few months of hard work, I felt unappreciated for never calling out and always doing my work effeciently. I started shoplifting. I would stuff bags into my pockets during my shift, and use them to bag stuff and then walk out the back door to my car after my shift ended. I did this every week. After 4 months I got fired, not for shoplifting, but for walking into an area of the store I wasn’t supposed to. I walked above the stockroom to check out what was up there cause I’ve never been up there before, and it was a computer with the store’s security cameras on it, I came back down and the deli clerk told the manager I was up there. I was fired the next day cause they thought I tampered with the computer. If I wasn’t allowed up there should be a door or signs. But there was neither. I know shoplifting is wrong. I don’t do it anymore after I left that job, I’m now 22 and a mail driver, and make 3 times that.

I can appreciate that sentiment, though I never worked in a warehouse.
I think my favorite in-store gig was 'freight manager' at a dollar tree. I did the front end thing for a while and I like to think I was great at it, but it burnt me out severely. At the time, the pay bump to freight was okay and basically all I did was work on receiving trucks with a small handful of people, and work the new stock in the rest of the week. I found ways to keep each of us on the freight team working in the back... each of us would get a day of managing the pallets and prepping boats. Half a shift killed on the truck itself, even if it is moderately hard work. I loved truck day. I'd be back there vaping and tossing boxes in a wifebeater lol. Half of my crew would come in stoned, which was fine by me cause they kept us above pace of the unloader in the truck regardless. And they're stacking the very pallets they'll be working, so it's not like they have any reason to wanna stack em poorly. And they never did. Chemicals was my favorite dept to throw. I could pick up a box with 12 gallons of detergent in it, spin it 180 on my right arm to then grap the top flap frontwise with my left and flip it forward, at which point my right hand comes up and clasps that side and rests it over my bicep, allowing me to quickly get the rest of the box open with my left hand. I would manage all of this while walking and kneeling to the shelf to throw them out lefty, never take the box out of my right hand because I break it down immediately after. Nobody was faster than me at chems. Getting good at stacking and tossing the heavy stuff can be a fun challenge, too. I really enjoyed the physicality of it and made my own fun of it, so the days went quickly. I just like being strong, being in a state where using my body and seeing what it can do feels good. It kept me healthy in an environment that does a lot to chip away at your well-being.
The best part is, nobody on the sales floor interrupts truck. Like, on slow days cashiers would offer to help on truck because of how it then keeps them off of the sales floor completely lmao
Dang man, there was a point where I talked the store manager into letting us stock on overnights. Our crew was short two people, and being on the floor with customers basically halves the boxes per hour we can do because we have to keep it clear of pallets and u-boats and have to help/work-around customers. Top brass wasn't gonna give us the people, but they could pay the few of us there an extra $2.50/hr to get it done overnight. We were first stop as well, so trucks came before opening, at the end of our overnight. That was an absolute joy. I honestly did love it. Just chillin and listening to music as I work through filling departments and building the next promo displays, or goofing off with the rest of our little tight-knit unit. We were kinda free to just... get it done and do our own work our own way with nobody to bother us. Keep one register open to sell each other snacks and drinks. Easiest management gig ever, staff manages itself and all you do is basic administrative in the morning to prep for opening, and then you fricken leave.
You know the main thing I noticed though? In groups of people who work front end and anything else more on the sales floor, the hostility shoots wayy up. I actually had a few different crews across the overnight gig, but things always went the same. We got along like friends would. And by that I mean, the phase where you've been friends for so long that sometimes it's nice to just be around each other, not directly interacting but doing your own thing, nothing more needed from each other. People didn't need to argue. We just kind of understood each other and conversation was easy. It's amazing what not having your social battery ripped through does for crew morale. I tend to think most people have some likeable traits about them that you can form bonds over, but not under duress. In customer service everyone is traumatized and drained, and people forget how to be good to each other. It's incredibly depressing once you spot it, and it becomes very hard to stick around if you can do ANYTHING else. I started with lot clearance - like, housepad prep. Hard fricken labor was more appealing. I had an in with a friend who's dad was in the business, my friend being his front end loader operator. The money I made in a day was wayy better, and you got paid at the end of the day. My body was haggard, but my mind was finally at peace. Out there, everyone was equal and nobody gave a crap about formalities. Do the work like everyone else and all is well, worry for nothing.
I'm like you, I can't go back. For a while I was on jobsites, lots of amazing experiences. Ultimately I went the HVAC route and got my refrigerant certs. So now I have all of this building experience, and skills in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. But I can also do drywall repair, painting, floors, so on. So where do I take these skills? A church and school that just so happens to have 37+ problem units and a need for maintenance with those qualifications to tend to them on the spot. They pay me above what I'd make starting as a lead in my field, and the benefits rock. They still have the full old-school package, full spread like it's an 80s career gig. Not to mention, everyone is so genuinely nice there. Kids are the best, they know a million ways to make you smile. It's nice to work around people and not have to pretend to be happy. My work is feast or famine. Sometimes I get to sit in my back room and play elden ring on my itx rig for 3 hours. Other times, I don't sit down for 6. It's the total opposite of retail's repetitious monotony. I have to size up each situation appropriately, many times needing to learn new things! And I mostly act as a free agent. I am the on-site property manager. I call-in bids for jobs, I decide what gets done when and how. Another administrative head coordinates with me on property budget, determines what gets spent, and works with me on getting budget needs across to finance. So he basically handles the BS part. I just buy what I need and get it done, or get someone else on it at the best price and makes sure it's up to our requirements by the end.
Retail just has nothing for me in terms of work fulfillment, I don't know how I survived to be a halfway happy person, to be totally honest. 10 years of my life. The one perk I miss is that it was pretty easy to get laid, even find a steady partner. You'll see lotsa people come and go, lots of chances to make a connection with someone. The proximity makes it easier to grow a relationship, to the point where twice I totally skipped the dating phase and wound up in an actual, full-blown relationship. We already spent so much time together, we both just kinda knew we wanted to be together, and nobody else was surprised. I guess one thing that I will say about retail, is it made me much more capable and dynamic in a social sense. I find that even as I go into different work environments, there are situations everyone else struggles to know what to do with, that feel like nothing to me because of my retail experience.

Old comment, as someone who had worked in a warehouse. It's not a bad job, I didn't have to worry about customers, I was able to get certified on 2 machines. What sucks is that if you like socializing you won't do much well at least in the place I work at, so if you're fine not doing much socializing it's okay. The other thing is, it's currently slow at my work so I'm laid off at the moment, it's the third time I've been laid off due to lack of work, may very for other warehouses.
Other than that it's not a bad job if you don't mind the physical labour, listening to sound of a loud rollers, if you prefer to work independently, and not wanting to deal with customers.

At the end of the day we are all human beings with a mind body and soul, so when you treat people like you want to be treated, it makes it easy to deal with tense situations at work. And for me i rarely get tense situations because i keep communication a must at work, i always make sure my staff is happy ( in a realistic way ) and i make sure we all have a good time at work, when you have a happy staff the job gets done 100 times faster compared to depressed and mad people. Accepting abuse is a victim mindset. You're only as good as your environment allows you to be, so it can be easier to accept abusive language and behaviour. I went to the store manager and told him i didn't appreciate gettinf called out like that in front of my peers and his response? (english is not my first language, so I apologize if there are mistakes) I also work at Winn Dixie and they are doing exactly what you typed. They hire a lot of people and cut our hours. My biggest problem with the store is our manager, because everyone in every department makes the exact same pay ($12.50). Another problem I have is their rewards program, because as a cashier, I despise my shifts more and more every time I have to explain to an eldery person how to put in their phone number, or reward numbers to finish the transaction, (because at least with my store you need to enter a rewards number to finish the transaction). Once again, another problem is that during my breaks they will kick me off my lane to train someone else, and while they train that person they ordered me to help with shopping carts (which I have never done before). All I did was nothing as I did not know how to use the one mechanism to hold multiple carts at once. There are also a lot more problems I want to write, but I've already wrote an entire essay just now. I also plan on quitting this job due to our crappy manager and coworkers that our manager/HR will also defend. Now that I'm done with my essay, I wish you the best of luck at Winn-Dixie (That is if you're there still).

Third Strike: Was paid nearly a third less than what my paycheck should have been, was denied overtime, and was capped at 38 hours/week.
Fourth Strike: Was sent in to clean bathrooms, left them looking flawless, came back 5 minutes later, and there was piss all over everything.

I can 100% relate with job training sessions that were just a massive waste of time lol
For me, my first job was like hospitality job. And the training was like 7 hours of me just sitting in a room watching these old corporate training DVDs from like 20 years ago, about how to treat people with respect. Most of which was literally common sense. It was the most obvious shit ever like "Greet people with a happy expression", or "Make eye contact when you talk to people." just things that are obvious. At the end, I had to take this written test, and not even lying, I didn't even pay attention to most of the training and I still passed no problem. Because again, everything that was covered was basically common sense that everyone already knows.
Thankfully, the job wasn't actually that bad. But the training was just a massive waste of time. I didn't need to sit there for 7 hours watching training videos on stuff literally 90% of people already know, because its common sense.

I think the worst I dealt with in retail/ fast food is when a customer who was trashed off his ass actually picked up the computer monitor to the register (they were pretty large CRT monitors then) and threw it at me….or tried to. That was my last shift. 😳
      It’s 10 times worse now🥺

@@invisiblepinkunicorn7626 Ngl I don't blame you one bit. I would've been tempted to clock out on the spot and hop over the front counter on that disrespectful bastard! 😤 This just reminds me of why I don't want to work in any form of customer service EVER AGAIN!

I used to work as a security guard in a massive store. My post was warehouse & truck maneuvering park , so my only contact with customers was if they ventured where they're not supposed to. It was mainly making sure the right trucks were offloading the right stuff in the right place (we had 3 ramps and about 30 trucks per day), keeping an eye on the workforce and putting theft countermeasure devices on more expensive stuff. The thing is that i was also resposible for anything not written in corporate guidelines, so anything unexpected. Every shift something unexpected happened (unsuprisingly), so i kind of get used to just dealing with stuff the way i saw fit. When the higherups came pestering me (and if they werent here just to be annoying, cuz everyone screws up sometimes and im part of everyone) i typically write solution they suggested in a special notebook, ask for confirmation that i written what they meant in front of a security camera and adhere to it to the letter, even if it caused the store to collapse. Worked like a charm. Every stupid suggestion eventually ended up as a lost revenue or a fine or the like and my bottom was covered.
If you are retail worker(or any entry level job really) i want you to remember that you are not supposed to ensure prosperity of the establishment that employed you. Do what your job description says you should and nothing else. That manning two registeres at once? Huge mistake. Its not your problem the lines are enourmous. You just do your thing in a humanly pace. The suits only look at ms excel spreadsheats, and thus notice something amiss only if the number in 'profit' table is lower than it should. So yeah, lazy people are in the right. No other way to pressure the corporate.

This video is so important. And I’m grateful that you shared with us your fans & viewers your experience within the retail work force. If this video was longer, I wouldn’t have mind at all. I do hope you make “truck night horror stories” like you mentioned.
I was a barista for 4 years and 6 months, and yes customer service, scammers, and creeps do appear and try to take advantage of us as employees. Especially if your kind hearted and pay attention (like yourself Pro)
I honestly felt your experience and sadness when you expressed what that horrible supervisor did to you. But it is what helps make you a better & more aware within the work field (kinds of people and etc.) Bad experiences, even tho I wish they wouldn’t happen, help us learn and be ready for future people & experiences. Proud of you Pro and I’ll keep sharing your RUclips channel with my close friends ! They love your content as well. Let’s Go ! 🙌🏽🤩💛

    Hey Patrick,
Absolutley everything you talk about in this video happened to me as well. I am from the UK, we did not get to sit down when we worked the checkouts either, unless you have a medical reason.
I sympathise with you fully, I worked my ass off for 8 years for this store. After a year, I was the guy everyone would come to for the department I worked for. I was constantly denied promotions.
When I finally did get the position, the upper management made my job almost impossible to do. They took all my hours away from my department (I worked the garden centre and was the ONLY department that had living, perishable goods) I was left with a skeleton crew to get all the hard goods, plants, chemicals, ornaments, sundries taken care of. There used to be a crew of 4 full time staff just for my department. I was reduced to just myself, and one guy on temporary hours.
I was expected to do all my regular duties as well as all the admin side of things as well!
I campaigned again and again that I need more hours and team. I was denied over and over. The middle of summer we get hit with a two week heatwave. I lost 75% of my plant stock, and of course, that was entirely my fault.
I am so glad I got out of retail, I would never go back!

I really enjoyed listening to this. Very relaxing.
Retail can be pleasant. You just have to do your job but like you said, don’t go above and beyond. I also try not to fret over things that I can’t control. In the past, I had some terrible experiences with staff and customers working at Canadian Tire, especially to do with the customer service desk and returns. There was a manager who would act annoyed and passive aggressive when I asked for help, even though they barely trained me. I’m now happily working at Dollarama, with pleasant coworkers and easy work to do.

No manager should be able to get away with the shit that first manager had put you through, I can't relate to working in retail but it makes me feel sick that mostly all of the negative stuff that happened was allowed to happen without consequence. So glad you got out of that toxic environment and are making cool videos for us to watch, you deserve the success from YT :)

Thanks for making this. After working for Staples for 5 years, I came to the realization that every pay increase I received was literally just an adjustment for inflation. Not only that, but my hours were cut so bad the last year that I basically only made enough for food+gas+car insurance. That's what being a decent worker in retail gets you.

    Great video Professional!
I consider myself lucky with my retail situation. Been working the same clothing store for almost 3 years. Of course we have those instances with rude customers, but what makes up for it is my coworkers and managers. We all have each others backs and we all have mutual thoughts that humanity is doomed with some customer interactions lol. I love how our managers care for us employees first. I feel so bad for you and others that have had not-so-good management and coworkers.

retail is just the worst, I had a manager who was so horrible to the staff that multiple times customers would step in and say you can't talk to them like that and have a go at her but she didn't care you'd get treated like you're not even a person

The whole point of working retail is to eventually leave retail, ive been doing it part time alongside taking classes at college for 2/3 years or so. leaving either when i graduate next semester or start getting paid more for being on the tik tok creator fund. 20 minuets in the video and just by looking at the timestamps i can tell you about 95% of this applies to almost every retail store in america.
