Hey man, just wanted to drop a quick comment and let you know how much I appreciate these videos. I play a lot of metal (especially the heavier genres like core and death metal) and videos like these help me incorporate groove into my beats. It’s easy to get swept into blast beats for half a song, you don’t really have to think to play them, you just go hard. Stuff like this really encourages creativity and spices up the generic metal sound. I really appreciate the simplistic breakdowns, and your “pass the goddamn butter” approach for the 2:3 poly really worked for me, and I’ve since been incorporating it into breakdowns for songs I play on. Again, thanks for all the work you put into these. I respect the hell out of your chops, and even though you might not do the heaviest drumming in the world, you’ve still got better groove than a solid 90% of those drummers.
Dude… this comment just made my day… thanks bro. I appreciate that so much. Thanks for taking the time. And metal drumming is an art. It’s not something I am particularly great at. Lol but I respect the drummers who put in the time and have the endurance to pull that shit off. I love that you are incorporating more nuanced technique like this into that style. Keep rockin, my man.
great job even though we all aspire to play this it never hits like jeffs does. that man was one of a kind and its a damn shame he is not here with us still grinding out the greatest grooves to ever be played. thank you for keeping the memory and work alive love it
When Jeff Porcaro played it he included the last note of the Bo Diddley beat pattern on the kick, which put a kick on every other 3, on top of a snare beat. When I first worked this out I did not play the kick on the 3. Later on I noticed in a video of Porcaro breaking it down that the kick was there as he played it. So I started putting it there. It made it harder for me to play it for a while and took practice to smooth it out. I've noticed people will play it either way and still sound good, and some add other changes to it as well. I put shuffle notes on the kick in a couple places too, which makes it easier for me. It seems to be hardest for me when I keep the kick pattern pure Bo Diddley, probably because then it forces the hands to carry the shuffle feel at all times without anything for them to lean on.
I love that beat . I’m 65 yrs young & in a couple of wks 66 i love playing the drums . The more I see these videos the more I love to play the drums. I’m no real drummer but I have a beat going. Thanks for ur drum video’s . I love them
I have tried my whole life to figure out this beat. Been drumming for 50 years, and still can't figure out how to play this. I want it SOOOOOOO BAD! Perseverance.
Excellent as usual Jeff would be proud Clarification hihat R hand Moeller pullout vs tap finger snap either way nice accent on downbeat fluid and smooth nice rim shot on 3. Well done!!!!
…Jeff talks about that on that video tape lesson… but I think that is just to demonstrate the Bo diddly thing. He’s not doing that extra kick on the studio recording.
an Italian drummer would tell you, mind you they are nitpicking, that the kick drum on second snare drum is missing like Jeff did. In my channel I had to defend myself by arguing that then everyone can play it with little variations, and removing the kick drum on second snare drum is one of them. Rock on!
One of my favorite grooves ever. I‘ve learned it by a mistake in 5 minutes, years ago. I was trying something else and suddenly I got this and thought „wait, that’s the Rosanna half time shuffle“ 😂
@@poindextertunes No. Im going to pull my foot out of my mouth and thank you for your help. Bad mood or terrible mood that day. No worthwhile excuse. Sometimes Im a goof. Try not to be often, but, I take a turn now and then. Hopefully, to not repeat. Peace

I second this comment honestly, I’m just a metal drummer who has no idea how to properly groove and pocket like this. Subscribed!
the Hi-Hats at the start kind of have the same rhythm that you hear in old Indian songs
Rhythm is a universal language.
That's a shuffle my friend.
What old Indian songs? Lol

it’s such a great rhythm and jeff just so effortlessly slides it into one of the most popular rock tracks of all time. what a genius!!!

Thank you 🙏!!!
Your 4th snare should have a 'K' too. It's the ghost note straight after the snare hit that threw me for years. Great vid, thank you☺️👌🏻
None of the snares have a unison with the Bass.
I think you'll find in the original there is. Several comments have pointed this out now. Good day, Sir
@@yandan7010 no. Watched a video about it. The guy goes into audio files n stuff. There is definitely not
@@monkael1438there definitely is. lots of people get it wrong tho. the kick on 4 was of Jeff's signatures.
I can’t do the ghost note after the accent. It’s always way out of balance. It sounds good enough without it.
What hi hat brand is that? 👀
Sabian Click Hats 14" ♥️
Thats f perfect!
Man what a beat
Terrific!!
Thx
I have tried my whole life to figure out this beat.

Awesome , thanks!
Love THE SNARE IT'S PERFECT😊
CRACÇCKK😌💪 playing this shuffle correct 💯 and you on your way to great backbone for the group 🎉
That's real purdy
Right on 👍🏾!
Your dissection is spot on ! Nice swinging
Iconic!! Love your sound
Thx 🙏
Excellent as usual Jeff would be proud

I have watched guys trying to emulate this but you have it nailed. Good job bro!
Ive been playing drums for three days and I'm ready to step up to the Purdy shuffle.
Lovely, breaks it down so well.
Thanks!
One of these days I’ll be able to play one of those half shuffle grooves… in a very far future of course
Get on it now.
Just Do It.
@@stevewarfel5788yes, I've been practicing it for 2 months now, and I can already somewhat smoothly play it at the original tempo
@@whobrickslegoguns Very cool. Love to hear you do it when you are ready.
In his instructional video Jeff plays the bass drum along with the snare accent in 3 of the second bar. His version of the Bo Diddley shuffle.
Is the ghost note after the 3 (the 3&) necessary all the time?
Cool fill at end man!!
Nice traditional grip rimshots
roseanna
one of my favorite ToTo songs I still have an original 1st pressing of that album.
Kick on the 2nd snare
…Jeff talks about that on that video tape lesson… but I think that is just to demonstrate the Bo diddly thing. He’s not doing that extra kick on the studio recording.
Need a kick hit at same time as second snare hit
Nope… that does not happen on the original recording
Is that a 13” diameter snare drum?
There’s a kick with the last snare in the original
Right!
The Kik drum is sposed to play the Bo Didley Beat..so You're missing 1 kik under the last snare hit.
It was such an inspiring video man

Hi. Actually you should be doing a paradiddle with the snare and hi hat using ghost notes. There is a video by Jeff Porcero on RUclips explaining it
That’s completely wrong. There are never two un accented notes in a row. Everyone has seen those videos, and he never said that.
Bippity bippity stash bash
This is simple, right ? Its like one month i train this and i cant really play it. Keep it up !
How sweet and beautiful is that?! 😃😁👍🏻
Thank you... I appreciate that.
Been working on this for a couple of weeks. This helps a lot! Thanks Jay!
You inspired me Glenn…
Was it hard for you when you were learning Rosanna
Of course... But I've been playing that track for many years now.
Do you know Djavan? Think you're gonna like! A hug from Brazil!
I do not... But I will certainly take a look.
Marked
Thank you, way too many over explain and make it way more than it has to be. Ends up being a drag and confusing, this is perfect.
One of my favorite grooves ever.
I‘ve learned it by a mistake in 5 minutes, years ago.
I was trying something else and suddenly I got this and thought „wait, that’s the Rosanna half time shuffle“ 😂
The kick needs to match the snare at the end. I'm terrible with everything other than playing, heheheh. 😊
Rushed a bit in the beginning, but overall good playing
Also he doesn't play all of those ghosted notes. They increase throughout the verse. Crucial to the overall feel of that beat.
actually there's a bass drum on the second backbeat but still, great video
There's actually not... lol Yes I've seen the Porcaro lesson, a million times... but listen to the studio track.
missing the last bass beat, no?
You tell me: ruclips.net/video/EAhQFMlAsb8/видео.htmlsi=3xqGmLr2qRmJtxHk
Half beat shuffle, well done sir.
Half time shuffle is correct

Seems simple and I tried. Not simple
Yep. Of course You did it. Damn you’re good. Jealous admiration. :/
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
but feel takes soooo long
ngeri sih
The only thing that made that song worth a shit.
How about showing us how to play Space Boogie off Jeff Beck There and Back
You’re going to disrespect an amazing band full of studio musicians and then bring up that irrelevant trash?? 😂

Not to hate, but if you're gonna post a groove breakdown at least play it right
I did… 😉
what was wrong about this?
