    I have a one-year old Poet's Wife. She is a vigorous grower. Last year I planted it as bare root, now it's at least 3 feet high and wide, it put on hundreds of blooms the first flush!!! And the flowers last for almost a month. I am ready to prune it for the first time this year, though there are still some buds! The scent is divine. I can't say enough good things about her.

    Thank you so much for sharing in depth information on David Austin roses. It is somewhat daunting to choose a rose just from a picture or two in a catalog. Please continue showing the different successful varieties, I absolutely 💗 these roses, and love seeing a mature plant, and knowing how successful it is years on. Thank you🌸

      Me as well- same zone Ohio. I just started planting 3 DAs last fall. 2 Boscobel & 1 Lady of Shallot….very happy with both varieties (this is their 1st season). Lady of Shallot is my favorite. Boscobel are smaller but the fragrance & blooms are incredible. I originally wanted Poets Wife but wasn’t sure how reliable (I bought Boscobel & Lady of Shallott from the good reviews on reliability in our area). Do DAs get larger each year? Any you recommend?

    I've grown David Austins for probably 30 years, and in my current garden (south central PA) the best performer by far is Olivia Rose Austin. There are others I like better for the color or scent, but if you only have room for one this is a good one. I've never had Poet's Wife, but looks enticing. I don't spray mine at all, except for deer repellent. The colors on most of the DAs can change a bit through the life cycle, but also with the weather and temperature. I did feed them a little this year, and they've done very well.

    I live in Newark, DE and am looking for Lady Emma Hamilton. I have 37 David Austin Roses and she is the one I would like to add to my collection. Thanks for this video, I got Poet’s wife this season and she is beautiful.

      Wow, 37 David Austin selections in one garden
      That has to be a beautiful sight to wake up to each morning.... Congratulations!
      Lady Emma is a beautiful rose and David says he loves the fascinating background story behind her name. However, she doesn't care for our region's growing conditions and sadly she refuses to perform well in our trials, and that's why she has been discontinued by David Austin roses.
      Have you got Lady of Shallot: ruclips.net/video/X1hDh7dmFCA/видео.htmlsi=E4u66u47y_3oBXsj ? She has displays similar coloring and is a much better performer - infact when you watch David's video you will hear him tell you that she is one of the TOP PERFORMERS in our 4 year trials.

    David the roses you show are simply breathtaking! Poets wife, lady of s and Imogen have hundred and hundreds of buds on the most perfectly shaped shrub. How do you do it?! Are these shrubs you are showing planted with multiple roses or are they single plants? In the UK how long would I have to wait to get this many buds on my Austins? Thanks

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  4 месяца назад +1

      Thanks, its nice that you've noticed and appreciate our efforts.
      We really don't do much except prune them in spring and give them a little dressing of fertilizer then too.
      These are all single plants, and most of them are now four years old, so they are well established and showing off their best.
      Its important to choose the best selections, and of course start off with good well-grown plants - something that here at Overdevest we specialize in (highest, consistent quality possible).
      Also, just remember, that we are only showing you the top performers from our trials....
      That is obviously the most important part, and why we go to the trouble to conduct our trials.
      If you look carefully through some of the wide shots, you may notice gaps in the plantings.... that's where the ones were, that didn't make it! 😉😉
      Stay tuned because later this year David is planning to do a video on summer pruning! Something that we have found works well here, and leads to a terrific flush of fresh new growth and flowers in the autumn.
      Thanks again for watching.

    How do you keep the blooms facing up? Most videos of this rose show droopy necks on the shrub. How do you manage to keep them strong and facing upright? Does hard pruning have something to do with that?

      Thanks for your question.
      We have not really seen this as an issue in our trials. We treat it like all our other roses.... i.e. prune them fairly hard in early spring, so we get good strong, sturdy growth.
      We do not apply any irrigation and we are careful not to over fertilize.
      And most importantly..... in these trials we are NOT spraying fungicides, which is why we are so pleased with its performance.
      It's available through at any of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ so if you live in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region be sure to stop in and take a look….

    I bought this rose last summer. It is still in the original green pot. Shall I change a bigger pot for it? Thank you, David.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  Год назад +1

      Yes, that's going to be important. After a year or so, it will need to be potted on into a larger pot, here's a link to another video here on this channel that will explain more: ruclips.net/video/f_X7s8fg2kA/видео.html
      If you live in the Vancouver area, you can probably over-winter them outdoors in your milder climate, so when David talks about sheltering them indoors or planting them out before the worst of the winter, he is talking about areas where the winters are harsh and cold, and the roots will freeze in pots.
      Also, have you subscribed to our channel?

    Why do these videos look like they were recorded in 1978? Would love to see your plants in proper recording quality.

      Thanks.
      Of course, the best way to see them.... is in their own glorious reality.
      That way, you can see, touch, smell and admire all their beautiful qualities and enchantments.
      In our nursery, we try to produce them to the highest standards, so that when you visit our partnering garden centers:grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ you can do all this..... and better still, bring them home, so that you and your family will be able to see and enjoy them for many years!
      Hopefully, the effort and information we provide in our videos (such as it is), will help you research and select the ones that are worthy of further scrutiny and closer consideration.

      Could be a variety of things. The best thing to do is contact your local extension office or a knowledgeable master gardener and see if someone there can take a look and help you diagnose what's going on.
