For me I tended to have one fast medium and three lights. Something reasonably fast (5/7/5) with jump jets with a bit of firepower to punch hard enough to hurt lights/vehicles. With a mix of jump capable lights. Depending on the terrain I would make the firestarter a mandatory include for the tactical options. And depending on the options I do tend to build energy based lances for scout/recon roles so they can get in with little worry about ammo (logistics and survival) One of my goto lances was : Phoenix Hawk, Firestarter, 2 Stingers All fast movers, jump capable and reasonably cheap. Very good against most threats, though if able I tended to replace machine guns with either another medium laser (official stinger variant) in the stingers, and with another pair of flamers on the firestarter (extra heat, and well infantry can't shoot so good on fire) so I didn't have to worry about mg ammo going boom
The basic recon lance offers many good games. They are faster than the heavy fights as there is less armor to chew through. A classic lance from the 3025 era that I had become accustomed to seeing was a P-hawk, Wolfhound, and ether a pair of Commando’s or Commando and Locust LCT-1S. I enjoyed each game with the Wolfhound and Commando’s that I started to play that line up myself and have made varies iterations of the lineup to include Razerback's, Uzeal's, and other Steiner mechs that have the movement criteria of a 6/9. I agree with every talking point of recon lances.
The problem is you're gonna be leaving your Panther behind more often than not because it doesn't have the speed to keep up with its lancemates, especially the PXH and STG since they can jump 6.

Panther, Wolfhound, Stinger C, Commando C.
If ilkhan.
If 3025. I'd go with Panther, Wolfhound, Phoenix Hawk, Stinger.

@WolfHreda true but that's fine. It's why it has the PPC.
