'a forest'
Come closer and see
See into the trees
Find the girl
While you can
Come closer and see
See into the dark
Just follow your eyes
Just follow your eyes
I hear her voice
Calling my name
The sound is deep
In the dark
I hear her voice
And start to run
Into the trees
Into the trees
Into the trees
Suddenly I stop
But I know it's too late
I'm lost in a forest
All alone
The girl was never there
It's always the same
I'm running towards nothing
Again and again and again
LYRIC: Robert Smith
MUSIC :Simon Gallup, Matthieu Hartley, Robert Smith, Laurence Tolhurst
Unbelievable...the older i get (57 now) the more i am happy that my generation was able to enjoy this new kind of music from The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Heaven 17, Blancmange, Depeche Mode and all ze other bands i listen to 40 years ago...
Yes, I agree. Also young generation from other sides of the world. I'm 18 from Siberia and I damn love The Cure. I love it with all my heart.
Same age. We were so goddamn lucky to grow up with such sublimely real, beautiful music. Tears my heart to hear this now, as it did as a 13yo
I saw The Cure in 1979 in London. Tiny crowd. Had a drink with the band after. Bumped into Robert before their gig in Santa Barbara in 1987 where I had moved to and he remembered our meeting the previous decade. Ate with the band post gig and we’ve been in touch since.
Robert Smith looks like he would be fun to hang out (way more fun than Morrissey for sure)
Wonderful story, lucky you 👍
So cool haha
That's amazing he remembered.its says alot about him
Like a pube in wind.
Timeless classic, this is the best Cure song in my opinion. Amazing how Robert’s voice has not changed much after all this time, still sounds fantastic!!!
Eu também acho! Esse som é demais!
The 80s era has been immortalized because of tunes like this one
And thousands of other spellbinding breakthroughs of pure emotion, magical power, and truth.
Immensely significant and truly special timeless time.
If you were born in 1980...yer alright with me...and I love you 🌬 💋💋💋
Ok, this song was released in 1980, but in my opinion, this is not that 80´s sound at all. This is wonderful postpunk, the "bridge sound" between 70´s and 80´s.
Curiously, the rhythmic undertone and the build has a fair amount in common with a few of DEVO’s songs. That’s where similarities end tho.
@@Santisaez1 a million times this. Us so lucky early Gen xers who had that brief, shining moment of post-punk beauty
This recording must be preserved at all cost
Bloody right 🍁
Agree with you !
If someone needs I have a copy........
@@davidt.3616 Uh how do we attain said copy
@@ender1151 I just download it.....In case it desappears......
I've listened to this song 20 times this morning. And I will play it 20 times more.
only 20? ;)
@@djdarrenrv never done once you see his determination
I want the 80's back !! 2023 sucks!!
Totally agree! Well it's 2024 now but I miss those days watching the cure etc at Glastonbury!
Americans really did know how to record timeless performance in a good quality, thanks them for this
it's called film and it wasn't limited to the USA 🙄
@@petercullen1462 Yes. Jeez.
what are you on about
@@petercullen1462 He did not say that only Americans record well. And we know what film is, he was merely saying that is is a good recording, that can mean audio or video or both.
It was recorded in New York and remastered in London.
1980??? The quality of the sound is incredible!!!
eldiabloenpablo they had quality analogic sound systems back then
@@philipdanielgonthierlamas8062 Exactly. Analog recording technology had been perfected by the mid 70's, and digital technology was still in it's infancy and almost never used for live recordings. Some of the best, most high quality live recordings (of any band) I've ever heard are from the '75-'85 period.
😄 I agree but now you can't see his guitar work so dang dark.
Roland D50 synth on stage, so this is 1987 or later.
@@ezion67 It's 1980. Been listening to the Cure for 30 years. You must be mistaken about the roland.
OMG I didn't realize Robert Smith played so much of the rhythm guitar on this track! What an epic track! These guys were rocking hard. Respect.
The greatest masterpiece of Rob Smith and The CURE !
The first time I saw them was in 1984 October 7th in Newcastle, Australia! A truly memorable experience. Robert was adorable!
Became a fan late 80's. Found them while in the Marine Corps in Desert Storm. Remember being in a trance listening to them on the Walkman that played cds. These days the trance feeling is the same
Normally after this i would quit the marine corps
Same, I will always think of my army time during desert storm listening to Disintegration.
Love the haunting unic sound of the CURE since I was a teenager. Now I'm 50 and I still do love this amazing band. "A FOREST " is one of their masterpieces. One of my favorites ones ! CURE is a timeless band whatever !
A forest and the edge of the deep green sea... The 2 best... Maybe have to put the baby screams in there too
Same here....timeless beauty!! Love you guys! 🖤🖤🖤
I was lucky enough to be there that night at Hurrahs!
Simply perfect, they were 20 years old! Robert had already a rendez vous with the rock history at this time...
They still give me goosebumps every time I hear this song.
same, what a debut
Saw them last night in Hollywood and the goosebumps came right back! 3 hour set that was amazing!
AMAZING QUALITY AUDIO & VIDEO FOR 1980.
Totally agree!
Analog >> digital
I dont think the early albums would sound so incredible with digital crap machines
Lol we weren't prehistoric men then!
Actually fairly normal audio quality for 1980. It was the age of analog, which had basically been perfected by the mid 70's. As long as the gigs were being recorded through a multi-track mixing console on to 1/4" reel to reel, and not on some crappy little boombox with a condenser mic, they all sounded great.
The best version I have ever heard !
Still a masterpiece after all these years, and this is the best version.
I saw The Cure in their first gig in Madrid, June 1985. I was awesome. I paid 300 pesetas, equivalent to maybe 1,5 euros today. Unforgettable.

this is some of the best EARLY video and audio from The Cure's first trip to USA I have seen
WOW No words. A pleasure watching RS playing the guitar! The bass, drums and keynoards too, but the guitar ... sounds mesmerizing
crazy how on point they were at such a young age and redefining music, all the while in the modern tech bronze age compared to today
@@miked1355 The Cure members are genius. I'm 52 yo and once a week I share music with young colleagues at work. They are astonished with most of the songs of that era, and The Cure are top level; they were innovative on their early years (and later too)
The underlying bass is incredible 💥👌🏼
they were super machine-tight even at this early time...
This was before Empire Strikes Back officially opened (6/20/80). It blows my mind what the Cure was doing compared to...THE WORLD
Never gets old. Relevant in todays world of music.
I know Cure since 1979, but i had never heard this recording, i am from France. Thank you english language for bringing us the best songs of 20th century. 🤪🥸🤩
I love this 1980’s Robert… cause’ he has the original essence of the performer, Just play your music and the World keep spinning around the real talent ❤
Still here ! Never forget listening to this in 1986
We still want more ! We still want more ! The voice of Robert Smith and the killing bassline of Simon Gallup !
the way robert walks in 🥺🥺🥺
Merveilleux! Six jours avant le 21e anniversaire de Robert Smith.
When your favorite song at 13 is still your favorite song at 57 💗 and is still just as amazing!
i have no words, best song , best live version, best quality upload ..... best!
A year before their best album - and arguably one of the best albums ever - was released.
One of the greatest masterpieces of The CURE ! Une référence dès les premières notes.
wow ive never seen this young of a robert. i was 10. didnt discover the cure till 1984 and by 1985 they were my favorite and to this day remains so.
I saw them in 1980 here in New Zealand, regent theatre Dunedin. It was raining I was 17, punk wrist band, badges, hair spiked, about maybe 400-500 mainly students there, Great start to one of the best decades of music
This live video of the cure a pack in April 1980 is freaking incredible and I have seen them back in 1985 on there the head on the door tour! That was the first time and last time that I saw them on tour! Their 1980 album is beyond description
I ran marathon hearing this song over and over , great !! the beat my pace
in again, again again againnn
I cry often when i listen to them. I don't know why. It's a good thing.
saw them live in Barcelona last weekend, their quality just shines through. Amazing
The best song of the Cure!!!! FABULOUS!!!!
My favorite The Cure song ................:... greetings of Peru 🇵🇪 ..:
Such pride, yet humility when he realizes what an awesome musician he has in his band.
It's really hard that I was only seven years old when the Cure played such professional music ... I love them ... And they will always be my favorite band ...
I was 9 when this song was recorded live. Whoever recorded then remastered thank you. It’s wonderful to see this. New perspective to this creative group of people
Wow... I hear this song and my toes curl! Love it
Les jeux de la lumière et l'écho illustrent parfaitement la forêt. Merci. Superbes images de ce magnifique morceau♥
My number one song by the cure hands down
So ahead of their time! Absolutely revolutionary! 1980!!!!
Saw them in San Francisco. What a treat...
Wasn't a Cure fan in the 80's (too much Van Halen and Ozzy), my bad. This is awesome!
Its an amazing feel, That opening guitar line is timeless.
I was listening to the Cure *AND* Ozzy and Van Halen in the 80's, except it was 70's Black Sabbath-era Ozzy and the first 3 VH albums only. Never needed to limit myself to one genre or join anyone's clique. I just liked what I liked, and still do. Caught a lot of shit for it back then, and still do sometimes. I gave not one single shit.
You got it right the first time.
that really does not go together... Van Halen - jeez :).
@@HaleG9 don't be a poser
Love this and omg is Robert a cutie pie here! Damn, look at that smile of his at the end !!
this recording is definitely a historical piece
I spent a whole night looping "A forest" on tape.
You can imagine, but you can't feel .
🖤🖤
Smith Gallup Hartley Tolhurst. Seventeen seconds 1980.
Amazing the fact that in this one you even can see RS expressions while singing, since most and later performances those details keep mostly hidden by his make up.
I love this band! And I love this song! Спасибо ребята! Без вас не было бы русского рока!!!
«Кино»?
I don't understand how a young man like Robert could create this amazing song and others great songs, a leyend Robert and the Cure.
Drugs,literature & being erudite
1980 were the Best years of New wave music ROCK N ROLL EVER
Bonne qualité du son ! En 1980 j'avais 14 ans ! Et je fais partie des 1ers fans de The CURE depuis mon adolescence
I tripped balls to this tune many a time back in the 80’s. Headphones a must.
🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌳🌳🌳🤯🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Just a Beautiful Song. Classic Cure.
Great Guitar and Bass Riffs 🎸 Robert Smith is What made the 80's So Much Fun! 🎸🤘😎
Tremendo documento histórico!!!
xD,ese sonido...
Felicitaciones!!!
Me gusta ver como surge de la oscuridad a la vez que se sumerge en ella otra vez, literalmente. :3
sí señor literalmente
grandes e inmortales the cure
genial Robert Smith um genio
I'm back to say, bloody brilliant piece of music
my 8 yo boy falls asleep to this right now.. sweet dreams :)
The UK and her culture is being dismantled. It's tragic but nobody can argue that for decades it's been the most influential country for music. It has so many musical geniuses it's crazy.
Just catching up with these early Cure videos. Always picture Rob as mellow big hair Joker-like goth when listening. But this early stuff .. it's really good. And so Rob Smith ... who would've thought ... was like really good looking ?
Was?😛
No matter what brand of music you follow that was fucking good
Robert's rhythm part is brilliant🤘🤘🤘🎸
Jeez Robert is 21 here. And right now the Cure is still the best live band around.
Jeez, 42 years later! What a gem
An unforgettable band !
And Robert smiles at the end. Fantastic version
He Knew this was a tight set
This is bloody excellent!
believe it or not - 43 years have gone and still on the stage
Big guitRist❤❤❤❤❤❤Robert Smith showww
Que manera de ser buenos en vivo con un sonido que te deja impresionado, miren los años que tiene esta grabación, impresionantes, los buenos músicos así son.
Less than 3 weeks away from seeing them in Vegas! Then 4 days later in Hollywood! Can't wait!
The Cure FOREVER
My alltime favorite of into the forest of the Cure. The voice of Robert is beautifull and the bass outstanding. Hope they will post seventeen seconds too some time.
Mate is almost 22 here. Outstanding!
This is a great live version! Sound quality is top notch
stunning performance
A master piece

The little licks are amazing :D
Perfect song and perfect footage. x
what a great early live version...damn
I have heard several versions on you tube, killer song!
Wow, this song gives me shivers. Fantastic
Much better than later performances.. here it's just about the music.
Not the image, stage lighting, gimmicks
Oh really 🙄, at least they still rehearse and play, plus their recent music is also good. Try to accept it, if only bit then.
Wish i was there!
What a hunk that Robert Smith was, and still is. Cure rocks!
