You must have heard the name John Cougar??? John (Cougar) Melencamp, the record company made him change his name to Cougar for the first handful of albums, then when he became successful he went by John Cougar Melencamp, now it's just Melencamp. Brilliant artist, Crumblin' Down, Jack & Diane, ROCK in the USA, Rain on the Scarecrow, Small Town, and many many more!!

John Mellencamp is one of my favs from the 80s. I saw him in concert in upstate NY back in 97. He is the only performer, other than Cypress Hill, who had to take a smoke break in the middle of a song. He was singing "Small Town" and stopped, walked to the left side of the stage (in full view) and smoked a cigarette while his keyboard player improvised a "Wave your hands in the air, and shake ......" rap in the middle of a song about small farm towns, most whom still hadn't heard of rap in the early 80s.

Mellencamp was an absolute hit machine in the eighties. It seemed that every single he put out was a mega hit. I took my six year old daughter to one of his concerts and it was a great show. She loved it, as did i. If I had to recommend one song, hard to do, it would be Pink Houses but there are just so many great tunes from him that anything would be fine.

This was John first full album with this song. Before this album, he was pretty much just a 4 member band. On his Scarecrow album , that was the first time John experimented with this sound on songs like Small Town. Other great song by John is Rain on the Scarecrow. But really almost anything is worth listening too of his.

Finally! He is the heart and soul of middle America. I saw him open for Heart. And I love Heart, but it was sad when he was done and that it was a short set. 30 plus years of his music. I grew up listening to him. He reinvented his music at least twice and really a third time although the past incarnation gets little air play.
