I put 120k on a G56 with a hot tune. I didn’t run it hard though. I did pull with it white a bit. After 120k miles, the synchros were going out but I still want another one. Should have never sold it.
Five days ago I traded a 14 2500 Laramie mega cab equipped with the 68rfe and 3.42 gears. It was my daily driver and when I towed my 43' fifth wheel. For the most part, it towed fine however, the shifts were horrendous. I currently have a 17 3500 dually with the Aisin tranny with 4.10 gears and it is a night and day difference. Very capable truck! Thanks for your vids👍. Keep them coming sir.
This is an older video but keep it simple folks. If you constantly tow over 15k lbs get an Aisin. If you want a better daily driver and plan on possibly tuning, go with the 68RFE. The 68RFE has much better manners than the Aisin but is not nearly as strong. The Aisin trucks will defuel between shifts and that makes itself known more as you tune and increase hp. That torque management helps with longevity but is annoying when driving unladden. So if you seldom tow and when you do seldom tow more than 15k, 68RFE all day. Aisin for heavy duty towing, 15k plus and constant towing! G56 no longer available in New trucks but fun in the older ones. They have a weak single disc clutch which gives good feedback and manners but can't handle hp. Dual disc clutches help them handle power but are grabby and sometimes hard to modulate. Remember, there is always a compromise.
Love my g56. Have 09 with 150 K. I drive all types situations, shifting is done automatically now by my subconscious. It's very dependable and lasts a lifetime.
156,000 2015 RAM 2500, 4door, 4x4, DIESEL deleted, camper shell 9500lbs. 21-25 MPG City, 24-31mpg freeway. 150k front pads change. All power train oils synthetic & change 33k. Power under 750ftLbs to avoid cracked case's.
2012 3500 4.10s 68rfe 160000 miles 0 problems fire wood 4 wheelers 33 foot coachman camper round bales and construction equipment up to a cat D4 dozer.
I agree with everything you said 100%.I have had 3 G56 and just traded for a Aisin a month ago. I love a manual but i drive 120 miles 8+ hours a day and never get out side of a 50 mile radius. All of my Driving is backroads . So the G56 was working me harder than i was working it but i like the towing ability. The Aisin pulls around my 12K load beautifly.. The great thing i like is how i seem better rested after driving the Aisin. I wish i could have stayed a Hardcore manual guy, but as i got older the constant gear shifts got to me .Backing is no longer a chore. So as long as the thing doesn't fly all to hell anytime soon, I believe i will be keeping the Aisin for a long time
holybuba. Right on. Sounds like you and me are in the same boat. Manual transmission type of guys at heart. but a good auto is alot more practical for our everyday life. So we are taking the easier route :)
For the amount of weight you haul I would get a dually period . I don't care what you say . I prefer 4 tires on the rear for stability then 2 . At the end of the day it's just advice . For the transmissions . All 3 are good transmissions as long as you don't add crazy power . If you leave them stock and pull what they are intended to haul you will be ok .
Anyone know the failure rate for the 2017 68RFE?? I'm looking at buying a 2017 deleted 2500 with 88k. Professional delete done. I'm also considering a 2015 6.7 with the same miles. The only thing keeping me from the Dodge is the trans...
im running approx 550 horse on a G56 that i tow heavy with almost daily, Now at 180,000 miles i have zero sycros, not saying the power caused that but im sure it didnt help it. NV5600 was honestly the best tranny ive drove.
Muscle car guy here. 🤔 Two 2016 Hellcat Automatics. 🤔 Always used "beater 1/2tons" for daily duty, but I fixed that about 2 months ago. Got a July 2018 build date Silver Ram Crew Cab 3500 Tradesman 4x4 G56 Cummins. Love it! Daily it! Just got the dealer to put in trailer brake controller ($550 bucks🙄). Plans? South Bend Clutch & emission equipment compliant tune to give me 2018 68RFE power level. 😃
I don't even know if Aisin is even all that dependable. I keep hearing horrible stories of how those things breakdown so fast. I love Ram and Ford over most other brands, but if it were me I'd pick the Ram just because they look super sexy. I have a buddy of mine who's been my best friend for 6 years now, and he's got his own landscaping business. He has a 2016 F-250 6.7l Powerstroke, and I told him I'm thinking about buying something different for my mobile welding business, like a Ram 3500 or even a 4500 flatbed with the 6.7l Cummins. He keeps telling me how bad the transmissions in those things are, but I just don't know. He says he's never owned one so you can see why I'm not that convinced from his input.
I had a 68rfe in my 2013. I just got rid of it this year so I only had it for 3 1/2 years, with 68k on it. I never hauled the weight you do but it still hauled a boat and a toy hauler. honestly I think it's based on what your intentions with the truck are. if your into hot shoting then I'd say go the way you did for sure!
The only towing I do is to haul toys. Jeeps, ATVs and occasionally maybe a full size truck. Currently using a 2001 4x4 ecsb 6speed Cummins and looking at 4th gens. For a guy like me I’m not sure if I need an ASIN but usually keep trucks for a long time. If anyone has any input it would be appreciated. Will I be fine with a 68? Also no intention of tuning or anything crazy and want a 2500 not a 3500
I’ve owned three Dodge common rail cummins trucks. 2004.5 with a NV5600 2006 with a full billet 48re 2006 with a G56 I will say a PROPERLY BUILT (Revmax, suncoast) auto will hold up to hard work and more than double or triple the stock HP. Anything can be broken if the operator is incompetent and/or runs equipment like a rented mule. $10k on an ATS trans is insane if one does any research on how that company treats its customers they’d be nuts to spend $100 with them. I wouldn’t run a fully built ATS trans for free. But I’d also like to see how the guy that blew this $10k trans up in just 4 years... If the Auto trans in these trucks blew up half as much as everyone claims do you think Dodge/Ram would still be in business? Yes they break but in more cases than not it’s due to loading a 150hp tune into a stock truck and kaboom! It’s also easy to melt a piston in the all mighty cummins by being an idiot, you don’t hear much about how cummins can’t make an engine to save their life, or how it’s just their nature... In my opinion Yes I loved my NV5600 it was very robust especially with a Southbend clutch. A dream to tow with. The fully built 48RE was so fun to drive on the street with EFI live running on the engine. Smoking 37s was all to easy in fun way but driving around town with 4.10 gears made for a nice driver and still towed respectably for a 3/4 that it was in. Upgrading the cooling was a must in my opinion. This truck made 620 hp on the dyno The G56 I had was probably my least favorite even with a properly adjusted clutch it shifted very slow and was geared very low. The truck drove much better around town and on the highway with 35” tires and 3.73 gears. Never had any problems but was always paranoid about twisting that aluminum case of the G56 like so many have done with more power and bigger tires. I will agree I wouldn’t want to push more than 550hp through one of these trans. Now I’m saving up to order a new 3500 with the Aisin because i feel in the long run that trans will be great for longevity and more HP when tuning is available down the road. I will agree that driving around town loaded or unloaded with a manual gets old real fast. If I was towing heavy all the time the G56 would be my choice but for what i need in a truck a built auto suits me much better. Just my two cents in my experience.
ATS 68rfe 10k tranny has a 5 year 500k mile warranty with a very high hp Limit. So, seems like a great deal. Stronger clutches and lockup prevents wear, and you'll get more use out of it. The 3k aisin upgrade isn't much better than the 68rfe. Revmax tore it down and showed the cost cutting cheap drums and planetaries, plus it has weak line pressure when shifting. Wish dodge has the ally. The Cummins is very stout, and my old nv4500 was a fun truck that never had problems with compounds and a twin disc clutch.
Hey Mr. PD. got a great sad story for you , got a buddy with a 2014 and he just killed a Aisin , truck has 70k on it truck is 100% stock. Now dealer installed a new Aisin , and a week later it shit out again....... Must of been a Monday build. any WHO''', No matter what DODGE/RAM/FIAT trans they all stink !
So I'm looking at a cummins for my next truck, my budget is around $20k, and I keep seeing 3rd gen 6.7 trucks with the 68rfe auto for a pretty decent price, significantly cheaper than a manual. I've always heard that dodge auto transmission suck unless they're beefed up, but one would think in 20+ years of building trucks they would have finally figured it out. I know someone who has an early 3rd gen truck and constantly tows 12-14k with the thing, and his trans went out at 80k miles. It's tempting for me to go for the newer 6.7 trucks with the auto because they're a good deal, so is the 68rfe decent? For the record, my end goal for the truck is a reliable rig to pull my travel trailer and get decent mileage doing it (6k trailer) and occasionally pull a gooseneck loaded with hay, just across town. Will a 68rfe truck hold up, or should I spend more on a manual?
You running the RaceMe Ultra? thats what i am running on my 3500 C&C aisin. With the 30hp tune. great power and throttle response. Fuel mileage did not change at all still getting 12mpg with 7k -10k behind me
have you ever had any issues with a 68 rfe with the center control stack not functioning properly sometimes? if I'm makeing frequent stops turning on and off the control stack will "freeze" like a home computer.
PD Diesel Power thanks for that. for the guy that does some side heavy hauling and the rest normal driving. what are your thoughts on getting a line booster? waste of money?
have you noticed a 3-4 flair with the AISIN? I got 6k on mine and it is fine but a very rare 3-4 on the upshift. transmission friend says an after market tune with get rid of it but I don't wanna put a tune in a brand new truck.
Robert Meehan I know exactly what your talking about. Its normal and after about 50k on the truck the transmission will finally start shifting smoothly. When new they are pretty rough. Weird but true. Side note, there isn't a single company out there that has cracked the tcm on these aisins. So no after market controllers do not exist for these aisin transmission.
Thanks. It seem like it is doing something weird like trying to lock the converter and shift simultaneously. Glad to know it will get smoother. I will have top ask the local transmission shop again because he said he can tune the AISIN
mine has the same thing 175k+ on the odometer bought it with 120k on it. I do flush and fills on the trans every 25-30k. Fluid stays looking clean. You only get about 6-7 quarts out on drain and fills but at least it keeps some fresh fluid in there. you can get the Mobil 3309 fluid on amazon for about $70 a case cheap insurance IMO. Same with rear diff fluid i change it at around 25-30k miles also its usually nasty everytime i pull the rear cover. 4 quarts of mobil 75w90 cheap insurance
dddire straits The easy way to identify the AISIN, IS OPEN THE HOOD, AISIN DIP STICK IS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, BEHIND THE ENGINE OIL DIP STICK. Make sure you get the AISIN. The AISIN is Toyota's medium duty truck transmission. The best transmission in a dodge Cummins pick up!! I love my 3500 chassis cab dodge pickup with Cummins engine and AISIN TRANSMISSION.
great video!!! say I got a 2008 dodge 3500 and I pull 18000lbs the truck has 190 000 miles on it and I have just encountered a new head gasket adventure, I was just wondering should a fella change out the head bolts to head studs? I am wondering if I would have went with the ARP 425 head studs a while back maybe this problem would not have happened and on the same topic I put a new transmission from dodge in this truck at 132 500 miles so with your vids I will be getting the Aisin on the next truck just to see what that apple taste like, I gotta say watching your videos is just like I'm listening to a good friend great knowledge of the topic we are talking about "common sense" I really like it!
Hey , if I were to get into a 3500 not hauling but will be placing a bed camper in it. and so I ask what rear ratio should I grab ? I'm looking to stay out on the road..tnx
Jim Cash. Depends on the size of the camper. I would most likely go with a dually because of the weight and high center gravity. And go with 3.42 rear ends. Hopefully this helps
I love just staring at a steering wheel while you rant and mumble. Not! Maybe start editing your videos and rant over something that has to do with your rant.
JDH if your engine is tuned. Then I say you should get the 68rfe tuned. Other wise if the truck is stock. Don't waste your because it's tuned for that power level. It's all about keeping the engine and transmission on the same level
9 transmissions between my bosses 2 3500 05's (7 of them) and 2 (trans)in his 2500 01's... (all stock, and used to pull concrete form trailers around for their business... between 10k and 15000 pounds) 4 Cummins purchase brand new... all nine Transmissions either rebuilt or purchased brand new here locally in Spokane, by reputable trans shops. Now that I'm in the position to need a used Cummins, I've seen enough auto bullshit...I will by a manual!!!
I'm on the fence about getting a Cummins. I'm looking to get into business that requires to tow 5000 to 6000lbs enclosed trailer 5 days a week around 100 miles a day. I know the Cummins is overkill for that weight but I'm wondering for longevity and do you think the 68fre is a good choice for this application.
its not overkill if you are going to be doing it everyday, I'm in same boat when I dropped down to 1500 class which could do the weight per the book numbers it was a bad decision an I had to go back to a 2500 minimum, looking to get into dually now just a better tow rig for hauling/towing everyday.
I plan to get one of these trucks but this is a constant question in my mind but I've narrowed it to the g56 and Aisin. Only thing I like more about the Aisin is the ability to go longhorn or limit and g56 you can't do that. I also like the extra torque rating on that. I wish I could get the H.O. motor with the g56 if they could just beef up the clutch at the factory... would love if that was an option... I can never narrow it down to what I want and I agree with everything you said in the video, I'd just add the factor of how good a cummins engine sounds with a g56 going through the gears... lol
I work at Aisin and I would buy it over any trans out there it's all in the design and aisin is better then Allison hands down with the cummins aisin trans better then the rest
I put 120k on a G56 with a hot tune. I didn’t run it hard though. I did pull with it white a bit. After 120k miles, the synchros were going out but I still want another one. Should have never sold it.

im sure the 4.10 gear ratios are way better than the 3.42
tyler boyer yes, they are but only for city driving and towing. The fuel mileage is horrible in comparison.
Antonio Cole ah i see

Right on. Sounds like you and me are in the same boat. Manual transmission type of guys at heart. but a good auto is alot more practical for our everyday life. So we are taking the easier route :)
2018 3500 215,000 miles on 68rfe and still going strong of couse i dont go around towing 30,000 pounds thats crazy for any pickup
For the amount of weight you haul I would get a dually period . I don't care what you say . I prefer 4 tires on the rear for stability then 2 . At the end of the day it's just advice . Dodge transmissions hold up better than everyone says
Nathan G
Well now they do back then different story
I have the 68rfe and good so far. I would like to have the Aisin but I feel good about the 68rfe.
WildAndLiving but I only have a 2500 so 18,000 it anyway. But yes your right.
Still treating you well?

I’ve owned three Dodge common rail cummins trucks.
2004.5 with a NV5600
2006 with a full billet 48re
2006 with a G56
I will say a PROPERLY BUILT (Revmax, suncoast) auto will hold up to hard work and more than double or triple the stock HP. Anything can be broken if the operator is incompetent and/or runs equipment like a rented mule.
$10k on an ATS trans is insane if one does any research on how that company treats its customers they’d be nuts to spend $100 with them.
I wouldn’t run a fully built ATS trans for free.

It’s also easy to melt a piston in the all mighty cummins by being an idiot, you don’t hear much about how cummins can’t make an engine to save their life, or how it’s just their nature...
In my opinion
Yes I loved my NV5600 it was very robust especially with a Southbend clutch.
This truck made 620 hp on the dyno

and was geared very low.

If I was towing heavy all the time the G56 would be my choice but for what i need in a truck a built auto suits me much better.
Just my two cents in my experience.
I had a 2015 with a G56 with 3.42 rears and it sucked to tow with. Still wish I would have kept the truck, but would have regeared to 3.55s or 3.73s.
PD Diesel Power I'd get the Aisin 6 Speed Automatic
Coming from a zf6 to a 48re I hated the 48re and it was built. 6 speed auto would be a different animal. The 4 speed was just not enough gears towing.
Cast iron vs aluminum. It depends on the situation.
I love manuals and Dodge has one of the easiest shifters I've ever operated. That said though because of my height, I prefer an automatic.
Hey Mr. PD. got a great sad story for you , got a buddy with a 2014 and he just killed a Aisin , truck has 70k on it truck is 100% stock.

Dylan Downard 68 ref will do fine.
Based on what this guy says and in my opinion you're totally fine. Your trailer is only 6k.
You running the RaceMe Ultra? thats what i am running on my 3500 C&C aisin. With the 30hp tune. great power and throttle response. Fuel mileage did not change at all still getting 12mpg with 7k -10k behind me
shawn h. I run EFILive. Sorry to hear about your mpg. I too have a cc and hate the mileage I get on it. but my is stock. My ifta shows 8.5
have you ever had any issues with a 68 rfe with the center control stack not functioning properly sometimes? if I'm makeing frequent stops turning on and off the control stack will "freeze" like a home computer.
Hank Rotering never had that
PD Diesel Power thanks for that. for the guy that does some side heavy hauling and the rest normal driving. what are your thoughts on getting a line booster? waste of money?
Lower gears and an Eaton over/under drive...better yet.
have you noticed a 3-4 flair with the AISIN? I got 6k on mine and it is fine but a very rare 3-4 on the upshift. transmission friend says an after market tune with get rid of it but I don't wanna put a tune in a brand new truck.

will do

Will be buying a used 2500 or 3500 in the next few months. Is there a way to tell if the truck has the Asian? (assuming the seller has no idea. )
i have a video on this channle that shows exactly that.

The easy way to identify the AISIN, IS OPEN THE HOOD, AISIN DIP STICK IS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE, BEHIND THE ENGINE OIL DIP STICK.
Make sure you get the AISIN.
The AISIN is Toyota's medium duty truck transmission. The best transmission in a dodge Cummins pick up!!
I love my 3500 chassis cab dodge pickup with Cummins engine and AISIN TRANSMISSION.
You Tube is all about VIDEO!!!!! We know what a steering wheel looks like???
I realize this is an older video. I just hope you dont hold the phone vertically anymore. I dont think you do.
great video!!! say I got a 2008 dodge 3500 and I pull 18000lbs the truck has 190 000 miles on it and I have just encountered a new head gasket adventure, I was just wondering should a fella change out the head bolts to head studs? I am wondering if I would have went with the ARP 425 head studs a while back maybe this problem would not have happened and on the same topic I put a new transmission from dodge in this truck at 132 500 miles so with your vids I will be getting the Aisin on the next truck just to see what that apple taste like, I gotta say watching your videos is just like I'm listening to a good friend great knowledge of the topic we are talking about "common sense" I really like it!
Great vid, can't help but notice your DEF is empty...
Ed Wilson its deleted.
Isn't aisin the brother sister company of Allison trans. I remember the sales guy when I purchased my Cummins told me that fact/rumor.
+Robert Murillo aisin is half owned by Toyota
Hey , if I were to get into a 3500 not hauling but will be placing a bed camper in it. and so I ask what rear ratio should I grab ? I'm looking to stay out on the road..tnx
Jim Cash. Depends on the size of the camper. I would most likely go with a dually because of the weight and high center gravity. And go with 3.42 rear ends. Hopefully this helps
What's a good tire pressure for a 3500 dually? with out towing? Can I use the jake brake with out towing?
Knocking on an automatic while sitting in an automatic.
Fuel efficiency man, fuel!
Do all your trucks have the Aisin?
I love just staring at a steering wheel while you rant and mumble. Not! Maybe start editing your videos and rant over something that has to do with your rant.
Isnt your motor around 800 torque stock and your running about 1000 tourque?
JDH. ya in 2014 aisin got 850lbs of torque.
JDH if your engine is tuned. Then I say you should get the 68rfe tuned. Other wise if the truck is stock. Don't waste your because it's tuned for that power level. It's all about keeping the engine and transmission on the same level
Thanks man
FFS 10 minutes of random rambling thoughts with little useful info. Even on 1.5 speed I wanted to punch the screen.
aisin is a Toyota parts company
why are guts snapping mounts?
I'm gonna get a suncoast built M3GA 68rfe... already have a race me ultra so it will only tune for 68rfe not aisin.
G56 for me
9 transmissions between my bosses 2 3500 05's (7 of them) and 2 (trans)in his 2500 01's...
Nice in? Is that for Ricen'? Pretty sure it's Knee sawn
I see that rev max agrees with you
I got an "05" with the g56 and although it shifts beautifully, id love to have gear ratios closer to the nv5600.
Rpm's are a bit high on the highway.
Do you have any issues with extended idle on your emissions intact trucks?
Bajaheat not really
Allison!
