This scene was one of the best of the UBW route, the dialogues between Shirou and the hero EMIYA are quite deep, I loved listening to Last Stardust again.
Fun Fact: Although Archer/Shirou say that their UBW (Reality Marble) "cannot win against opponent who has mastered one", that's only true if he chooses the tactic of mimicing. The official Type Moon settings material describes Archer's UBW as "one form of ultimate bladeswork" that rival some of the greatest heroic spirits and their Noble Phantasms. Given his experience (i.e., growing up as Shirou on his life journeey to become champion of justice + experience afteer beccoming heroic spirit), Archer has lot of experience in and has become adept at fighting against opponents more powerful than himself. His strength is in utilizing the various tactics available to him with projections/UBW, rather than simple mimicing. His ability to "trace" the opponent's weapon and immediately understand the opponent's identity, Noble Phantasm, fighting style, and life history allows him to choose the most optimal tactics and weapons (i.e., weakness) against anyone. Even Berserker Hercules paid respect to Archer by saying (upon gaining some rationality back) that he "wished they had fought when he (Hercules) had rationality (i.e., no berserk)" when Archer killed Berserker six times (without targeting the master, like Gil!) in S/N route. Lancer Cu describes Archer as "unexpectedly skillful and tactical", as he is able to fight at same level against opponents that have higher status. Saber describes Archer's swordskills as "refined to perfection through devotion (i.e., not by talent)." Above context also serves as proof that Archer was not going all-out on Shirou, because his purpose was not just to kill Shirou physically but force Shirou to give up on his ideals and beliefs. (Spoiler) He also defeats Saber in Hollow/Ataraxia, although with some handicap.
@@Dovahkiin914 Shirou doesn't yet have that experience to fully leverage UBW's potential (in UBW route), so mimicing is the only tactics available to him at this point. So from Shirou's perspective, it's true that he "cant beat any other servants" at this point. But UBW itself is indeed powerful noble phantasm!
He only beat saber because of shirou holding her back, otherwise it would’ve been a wrap. But yeah, emiya gets a bad wrap because most of his fights are against his best counter, Cu.
Man Cu is such a massive counter to Emiya. His protection from arrows counters blade spamming and his own arrows, he is much faster than Emiya, his battle continuation will keep him fighting even if Emiya landed something lethal, and his disengage skill will let him run away if he ever senses he's in any true danger. Also, his NP Gae Bolg is absurdly broken, only handicaped by Cu's horrible luck. But who knows it might work on Emiya, since both have E ranked luck. It'll be a battle between two horrible lucks, and if Cu wins the battle is over. Plus with a good master, Cu can spam it up to 7 times in a row. It's crazy. Cu is one of Emiya's best counters, both ability wise and personality wise since they are opposites in life and practice.
For those who aren't really deep into the lore this was the battle of will, a test by Archer to see how strong Shirou resolution to fight for his unrealistic ideal to save everyone. He doesn't want Shirou to endure infinite pain he's about to have, if he can't even beat his servant self how he can save thousands or even million of live without losing once. Archer forgot 1 thing, his battle spirit was long forgotten which Shirou remind him of. It his duty to save others even he can't save himself because he want to return the sole purpose of him the only surviving victim of the fuyuki fire, he's reason was to help every single person he met.
I see it differently. Archer really wanted to kill Shirou, not just "test" him. His argument was, that "because end of our journey was not what we desired for, the journey itself has no value. You should just die, because your future path has no meaning. If you die, I will disappear too and our mistake will be fixed. " Shirous counter argument was "I agree we failed in the end. However, even if the end result wasn't what we wished for, our journey still had value itself. You lived as you thought you should and I will live as I thought I should. There is nothing wrong in that. Even if we couldn't make our dream true, we used our life to work towards that goal. Our dream was not fulfilled in the end, but neither was it wrong to live by that dream." What Archer forgot wasn't his battle spirit. It was, that Archer thought his dream was just copied from person who saved him, because he as Shirou admired Kiritsugu Emiya. That it wasn't his own dream and he didn't even have own dream, because he just try to make another person dream true. Shirou remind him that he didn't just copy dream of man who save him. He genuinely believe that putting others before yourself is beautiful dream and he should work toward it to become "hero of justice" even if he couldn't become one in the end. It was his own wish that put him to his journey, not that he have to pay back to Kiritsugu Emiya. In the end Archer let Shirou put knife to him, because he understood that it was his own dream. He could kill Shirou, but he could never break his spirit. He could never make him let go of his dream, because he has walked that same path. In the end, it wasn't his dream that was foolish, and he didn't want to strike his younger version down just because he believed what Archer himself had always believed.
NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS, this is what story telling is all about. It cements Shirou Emiya as my favorite hero in fiction. To battle his literal future self that lost to despair only to reignite the hope he had lost.
for real, that annoyed me the most. There's a dude who dropped the series because "Shirou's plot armor against Archer is the dumbest thing in anime" and never have I ever clicked a dislike button so fast in my life
For those wondering, this was never a battle of strength, it was of will. Two conflicting ideals trying to prove itself to the other. If Archer wanted to, he could ve just ended it, but that wasnt the point. His defeat at the end was him remembering that scene w Kiritsugu n realizing what he forgot, his old ideal.
Especially when it's something so different from the rest of the OST. When Last Stardust started playing, it cemented the scene to be the peak of UBW story and considering that UBW focuses on Shirou's and Archer's connection, it makes sense
If Gilgamesh were to go into the past and remind his past self to change , they both would be laughing together with Future Gilgamesh using his EA because he can't stand his own arrogance.
This scene was peak in the VN and even more peak in the anime. While the UBW VN didn't show Archer whipping out his reality marble, it's nice that the anime opted for this direction because it is better thematically when you think about it.
i don't agree, archer had low mana to create a marble which was not needed for him to beat shirou in the first place, also it was a clash of ideals which were always depicted in simpler fights in VN like kirei vs shirou fist fighting, archer and shirou swinging swords
@@imfedup259 Yeah but considering how this medium caters to the greater audience who enjoy action mixed in with story telling, having to add this was a way to pander to the greater populous that don't know about Fate and just wanted some good endgame action whilst summing up what the anime was adapting from the VN

Ive got to say UBW Shirou would be the best Shirou who developed that is on par with Heavens Feel Shirou and Miyuverse Shirou so yeah
It still bothers me that Saber is just there with no major role or anything here in UBW. Feels like she's just there so Shirou can be called a master. Or maybe it's just me. I wonder what happened to Sakura in UBW. Is she abused by Shinji too? Is Zouken still inside her? etc. Poor girl.
