Six months after this performance, so sublime, Tom Jobim, the magnificent purveyor of bossa nova, lost his health, but he never lost his heart for the music, and for all of us ! A true jazz master ! Bravo !
Antonio Carlos Jobim, better known as “Tom Jobim” in his homeland, is arguably one of the most important songwriters of the 20th century, rivaling Gershwin, Porter, McCartney & Lennon, and Wonder for sheer consistency and diversity of output. The sheer number of cover versions in circulation since the 60s keeps Jobim relevant globally among jazz and pop musicians. 4:06 [uDiscoverMusic]
Yes, I love Tom Jobim as well, his wonderful music and his tender singing voice. Here he sings in a higher tone than ever on the second verse. He died later that year, 1994, in New York, so sad. At this time he was having surgery in New York. His sister Helena tells of this time in her beautiful biography of Tom.
Fantastic video, thanks for posting....Antonio Carlos Jobim, may you rest in peace...and thank you Pat Methany, I love this song, so sad, and yet so sweet! Thanks!
Such a treat, two greats of the Jazz world. And what's this?! Pat Metheny in a suit and tie?! I was at least expecting him to be wearing black sneakers.
Yes somewhere I read Pat commenting that no one should imitate his guitar technique. He had teachers but was such a prodigy he was largely self taught.
Apropos this, I attended a Lee Ritenour masterclass in 2016. I asked a few questions on technique and among his examples was Metheny who "looks like he's never held a guitar pick before"...!

Even now as a 65-year old man, Pat still strives to dress like a SoCal skateboard punk. It was cute in the ‘70s, but it’s a bit off-putting now that we are all (supposedly) grown up. 🤷🏽♂️
Hahahha, his typical outfit, I was on a concert about a month or two ago with him, I said to my father: "I bet he's wearing a striped tuxedo" And indeed, of course he did.
Apart from the Tux, I've never seen Pat looking so nervous and uncomfortable. I think he forgot to turn the volume up on the Ovation until he started his solo. You can only hear his comping during the second half of the song.
And those crappy Ovation classical guitars always sound like plastic. It’s impossible to get a credible tone out of those things. Why didn’t he just use a wisely populist Takamine classical guitar with electronics onboard? Gah…
Is Pat playing a nylon string guitar, ? That's pretty rare. Saw them both in concert and Pat especially at my years at Berklee. To bad he's not not singing in Portuguese...
Nothing wrong with using a pick. On hard tension nylon strings you get a much different sound from the strings. This is a 1979 Ovation 1624 Country Artist nylon he's playing.
Viva Tom Jobim, carioca, do mundo, brasileiro! 2:02 [Blog Terra da Música]
Antonio Carlos Jobim, one of the greatest Brazilian composers. We miss you a lot.
He's The Godfather Of The Bossanova.
u can remove the word Brazilian cause he is one of the greats in general, in my opnion at least.
That man knew how to make you feel what he composed.

Pat's contribution to this song is so deeply passionate - love it!

God rest Antonio Carlos…such a talent… magnificent…and this concert, just shortly before he died 8th December 1994. Lovely guitar too.
My two favorites artists together 🙏🏻❤️
Ohhhhhh my dear GENIUS Tom i´m still crying for you, why did you leave us so soon, you filled this world with beauty and poetry. I love you Tom.
I think that he died the same year that that concert took place (1994) !
i think for me the same.. his music is daily in my mind great composer and great harmony that's what this guy made respect !!

100%agree❤❤❤❤
Rapaz, escuto Pat metheny a 20 anos, e Tom, desde criança.

The two giants of Brazilian music are Heitor Villa Lobos of Bachianas Brasileiras and Tom Jobim of O Morro!
Such a treat, two greats of the Jazz world. And what's this?! Pat Metheny in a suit and tie?! I was at least expecting him to be wearing black sneakers.
Maestro Jobim, Incrível Pat!!! Dueto maravilhoso!!! Viva a Música Brasileira!

Beautiful! This is a fantastic performance
If Mozart's spirit was in the stage that day, my top 3 musicians of all time would have been together
UN DUO MEMORABLE !
That it is!This song is beautiful with Jobim.
Encontro de gênios resulta nesta beleza de música.Bravo!
absolutely fantastic
The melancholy and the infinite sadness
Amazing how Pat Metheny holds his pick so opposite of what every guitar teaches but yet doesn't seem to hinder him a bit.
So it’s just not me that noticed. Whew, I kept waiting for it to fly out of his fingers. Still an awesome effort.
Pat is a genius. He started teaching his teachers when he was in college. He makes a string instrument sound like wind instrument. 😊
Worry not, he knows what he’s doing with that pick.
Yes somewhere I read Pat commenting that no one should imitate his guitar technique. He had teachers but was such a prodigy he was largely self taught.

Metheny improvises his solos. Incredible.
jobim was my favorite composer
Beautiful, I thank you 🙏🏻

Simply amazing.
Nothing is over! Do you feel me now ("Jack")? 💓Where has your trust and confidence gone, honey? 😊😻 // Thanks for sharing!
Bell dueto, grazie!
Genio Jobim y Pat en lo suyo
Love the way Pat uses minor blues phrasing on his solo. Always seems to dig down to the essence while climbing up the neck.
Maybe because the original recording has the counter melodies in the blues scale
VEJAM UM NORTE AMERICANO E UM BRASILEIRO,TÃO DISTANTES E TÃO PRÓXIMOS!×
How Insensitive
How insensitive
I must have seemed
When she told me that he loved me
How unmoved and cold
I must have seemed
When she told me so sincerely
Why she must have asked
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to say
What can you say when a love affair is over
Now she's gone away
And I'm alone with the memory of her last look
Vague and drawn and sad
I see it still
All her heartbreak in that last look
Why she must have asked
Did I just stare in icy silence
What was I to do
What can one do when a love affair is over

Grande Tom Jobim!
I have an audio recording of this performance and the audio mix was clearly enhanced so Jobin’s voice came through more than it does here.
Wonder how many guys it took to hold him down & force the tux on him.
I was thinking the exact same thing!
Even now as a 65-year old man, Pat still strives to dress like a SoCal skateboard punk. It was cute in the ‘70s, but it’s a bit off-putting now that we are all (supposedly) grown up. 🤷🏽♂️

This video needs headphones to sound good for some reason.

How long, before his death, was this recorded? Rest in peace, maestro.
