BOSS RC-10R vs BEATBUDDY -- Comparison Review

  • I've been using the Beat Buddy for several years and have really loved it. I was excited to see Boss release the RC-10R which is a copy of the BeatBuddy which includes a built in looper. In this video I compare the two products to see if the RC-10R is a worthy replacement for the Beat Buddy.

    Everybody has different needs. Not just the drum machine sounds. I sold the Beatbuddy. Grabbed the RC10r. I run a bass guitar pre recorded on one side for the verse and chorus. Play my guitar and sing along with it right along with the drums. Been out working with it at my regular gig places for over a year now. Not a problem at all. software for midi work with the rc10 is way better than the buggy software for the Beatbuddy. And you don't need a high dollar external foot switch to work with it either. Lot's of choices.

    I just picked up the RC10R and while it is rather robotic with it's default patterns I was excited to find that there's a converter software that allows you to make your own patterns. I have been diving the manual and the midi for this unit. Tap tempo are not available in stomp button format it can be added via midi to any external device or linked to another device that has midi clock. You can also assign out those footswitch buttons from the menu. To me this works better if you have some midi knowledge and can tap into the features you want like assigning things via cc to whatever. I plan to add a few cc for pattern transition and stop. They also have a Tone Studio app that allows you to download backing tracks just like the beat buddy. I have been looking at all the loopers and there's not one that has the dynamics of the beat buddy or the functionality to allow you to upload your own wav sounds for the drums. If someone would come up with a combo unit that allows you to control midi for all features, have sound dynamics for the velocity, an app that allows you to make patterns, share and download backing tracks, and function as a looper... well that would be the ultimate looper in my opinion. The RC500 did not improve on the features of the RC10r.

      If this guy does do a follow-up video, it would probably be a good idea for him to issue some corrections for this one since it is full of outright inaccuracies that paint the RC-10 a lot differently than it actually is. Perhaps it would help if this guy were to actually learn the most basic, most obvious functions of the pedal because pretty much every complaint he has about it isn't actually a issue at all. Seriously. It has pretty straightforward settings for turning the intro and outro sounds on and off, altering the sound of the drums, and even syncing the loop and rhythm section with almost no effort. What's more. the manual pretty clearly lays out how to use and configure a external footswitch to act as a tap tempo or many other functions as you desire.
      I would not trust this video at all. It isn't that he dislikes the pedal, it is that he clearly doesn't understand even its most basic functions.

The BB is the MIDI master. Let's say I have a BB song with 2 parts. I'd like to switch between the BB Parts and at the same time move from loop 1 to loop 2 on the non-SS looper. You were clearly more impressed with the Beat Buddy than I was. I’ve never used the Boss RC10R but I did buy a Beat Buddy about five years ago when it first came out.
    Yes the sounds were good, but there were two patterns on each page, and they didn’t really sound that much different to each other, verse and chorus sounded the same to me.
    I also didn’t like that if I switched the pattern the tempo would jump back to a ‘default’ (90 bpm if memory serves) so I had to mess with the tempo knob or start 'tap dancing' for each new song.
    That also meant if the song wasn’t in that ‘default’ tempo I could only use one beat because if I changed page in the middle of a song, it would jump back to the default tempo at 90 bpm, which was a PITA.
    Perhaps I had it set up wrong or something, I never got to find out.
    The Beat Buddy literature said I could use ‘any 9v power supply’ (they even mentioned Digitec among others) but then one day I plugged in the supply from my Digitec RP255 and the BB went ‘bang’.
    As it turned out the Digitec pedal was AC and the BB runs DC… Most products these days have ‘safety cut-outs’ for protection in just such a case, sadly the Beat Buddy didn’t.
    In fairness I contacted BB, they had me send it back and they repaired it, but when I got it back it only worked for a week or so, then it went ‘white screen’, and it hasn’t worked since.
    I contacted them again but they told me they had already repaired it once, they weren’t going to do it again. I didn’t see a white screen as being the same problem as an incorrect power supply, but they were adamant it was now my problem and not theirs.
    So nowadays I have a piece of useless junk with a Beat Buddy logo on it and I use a Digitec S-DRUM to bang out the beats I need.
    I’m happy not to be scrolling through menus and genres, I don’t get unwanted tempo changes, I play whatever beat I feel like playing and the S-DRUM simply does as it’s told.
    The snare might not be the best thing I’ve ever heard but when I link it to my Pigtronix Infinity it’s brilliant for making up the beats I want for live looping.
    Plus the S-DRUM is great when a guest jumps up on stage with me for a song, coz I can let them start with a rhythm while I ‘scratch along’ on my strings for a bar or two.
    Then I stomp on the S-DRUM like a looper, and ‘the drummer’ is in sync with us.
    I was never able to do THAT on a Beat Buddy

    • @phil-good
      @phil-good 7 месяцев назад

      Woaow …. I’ve had exactly the same problem and experience as you !
      The S-Drum is magic !!!
      And also, i prefer the sound quality of the Sdrum than the ones of the BB
      I got mine on Dec 2023 for 160 Euros, 1/2 the price of the BB !!!
      I had that white screen too on the BB and they replaced it in a weeks time.
      But i prefer going with the Ddrum ….

    There's no doubt that beat buddy has a better engine and more samples, maybe you can even say higher quality samples. However, it also has reverb that you can't take out. Which is absolutely ridiculous. You'd have to buy a premium library for an extra $300 just to get sounds that are drier.
    My solution was to start making my own kit, but of course that process is painstaking and crazily time-consuming. However, I did it, and it was interesting. But in the end, being a person who wants their looper and their drum machine to synchronize correctly, and not feeling like buying an aeros, I went with the rc10. You can make your own beats, although I'm sure that's not easy either, and I would probably make them simpler as to not trigger multiple samples in a row like that. My needs are not that crazy as a guitarist who just want something to vibe with like a groove and be able to loop along with it. The beat buddy was way too much difficulty to synchronize and I sold it for a little bit more and I bought it for which was great. So I can tell you from experience at the resale value is awesome for the beat buddy!

    • @jasonbrianmerrill
      @jasonbrianmerrill 2 года назад +2

      Also, I would say that beat buddy is more meant for a one-man band situation. But, since we're giving opinions here, I typically think the one man band thing sounds pretty cheesy. I'm sure you could do it well, but when I realized that's what I was becoming by potentially spending all this time with the beat buddy and if I were to use it to its full extent, that was another thing that kind of turned me off.
      Also, I feel like saying that you could put 300 million songs on the SD card it's just not that interesting because obviously an SD card you can get at a huge size and MIDI files are like 1 to 5 KB so obviously you could fit that many in there.
      I don't know, I think it's very entertaining, but at the same time it's not really the best review in that it does compare the sounds and you're 100% correct about the sounds. But also have we talked about how weird the switches for the beat buddy? LOL
      Also there's a conflation of sounds versus songs here, there's no way you can fit 300 million sounds on the beat buddy. You can fit 300 million songs but not sounds. Sounds on the beat buddy are 32-bit wave files and not only other drum kits weirdly limited, that's another thing, for some reason the drum kits on the beat buddy only allow for like five velocity layers, whereas on any modern-day sampler since 2010, you have at least 127 levels. The beat buddy could have done it but they didn't.

    I agree 100% with this. I had big hopes for this pedal. I took it back and swapped it for an RC5. The 5 is a great looper- much better than the 3 imo, but the rhythm tracks are still lacking. They sound unnatural and I got bored of them very quickly. And there’s less functionality than with the 10R. Like, you can’t send the rhythm to one output and the loop to the other. (One function that I really liked about the 10R)

      I am "hating on this video" because its entire premise is built on outright technical inaccuracies. The guy who made this video clearly either didn't read or didn't understand the basic, very clearly written instructions because a lot of his gripes would have been solved had he understood the basic functions of the pedal. The tap tempo (via a extra footswitch) is clearly explained. The ability to easily and quickly turn off the intros/outros is clearly explained. The ways one can actually change the drum kit sounds is clearly explained. Heck, the pedal is pretty much built around the ability to hold down the rhythm button until it turns blue to indicate that it is now synced with the looper. It is a incredibly easy pedal to work with but this guy either intentionally or ignorantly completely ignores most of its functionality for some bizarre reason.
      This review isn't a issue because he doesn't like the pedal. It is a issue because it is outright misleading in just about every way possible.

    I just own an Alesis SR-16 Drum machine and a Digitech JamMan Stereo looper . . and together I´ve been able to cover beautiful music . . . can cover almost anything, Rock, Pop, Latin, you name it. . the Alesis comes with many popular styles of music and if I come across something that is not adaptable to apre-made rhythm I can make it myself . . to me it´s not so hard as making a rhythm in a fully programmable machine like the BeatBuddy . . or maybe I´m just old school. . . yeah, the Boss RC10R looks pretty disappointing.

      @@gigantebrasil6576 O Beatbuddy tem mais recursos. É muito mais avançado. Tem mais transições, viradas, início, fim, etc. Só é um pouco complicado pra programar no início. Mas a quantidade de ritmos que vem nele cobre bastante o repertório de quem toca na noite. E o som é espetacular .

    • @RosalvoParadella
      @RosalvoParadella 4 года назад +2

      @@andrebracher6033 com certeza dá pra usar. Por se tratar de midi, a conexão será completa. É só zerar o volume da bateria Boss RC10R. O BOSS RC10R pode até passar o sinal de audio através do Beatbuddy, já que só precisaria gravar o som do instrumento no Boss RC10R. Só teria que resolver quem seria o Mestre/Escravo na questão da sincronia de tempo via midi.

      Na verdade, acho que quem pisou na bola mesmo foi a singular sound. Já que o produto carro-chefe deles é o beatbuddy, deveriam ter feito sua evolução como um "beatlooper", ao invés disso, fizeram o aerolooper que é caro pra cacete e ocupa muito espaço no chão. Não acredito em muitas vendas desse produto, não é prático pra quem é da noite. Espero que com o rc10 a Singular Sound se ligue e projete algum produto para competir. A ideia de ter os dois num aparelho é boa, o que melhoraria ainda mais a grande sacada do Beatbuddy.

    I was on the market for a Drum/looper pedal and came across this review. Can I plug my guitar into the the BeatBuddy and does it loop?
    ...........oh....its only does drums. So why the f*** are you even comparing them? I am totally not interested in the BB......I am after a drum/looper.
    In any case, I had a BB and returned it for an SDRUM. Why? Because it was a pain to wade through its millions of drum patterns....and to find the one that would fit my riff would take me a lifetime, and even then, would be a compromise. With the SDRUM, I can create my own pattern.....in seconds.
    Of course, you are entitled to your opinion......I just dont share it.

      Obviously what is done is done but I strongly encourage you to not take videos like this at face value. The guy who made this video pretty obviously didn't even learn the basic functions of the pedal and as such, the video was full of outright inaccuracies. I am not even talking about little nitpicky stuff, it is just outright wrong on a technical level many times.
      As I said before, what is done is done but in the future, it might be a good idea to be very, very skeptical of user reviews, especially when they are full of hyperbole and not much else.
