A Walk Through The Ohio State Reformatory: "Shawshank Prison"

  • This is a walk through the last stop on my week-long Michigan & Ohio Museum Odyssey, the famous Ohio State Reformatory, well known as the filming location for almost all of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption". I explore the administrative and residential sections, both the East and West cell blocks, and the solitary confinement wing.
    In a separate follow-up video, I will show my subsequent travels in and around Mansfield, Ohio as part of the Shawshank Trail, visiting iconic filming sites where other parts of the movie took place.

    I live 3 miles east of this. My grandfather and I were CO's here ( I started at Marion Correctional first, then transferred here ). Working the tiers was an education in itself. Grandpa was a guard', as the term CO had not come into vogue before he retired. He ended up on the honor farm, run by trustees.

    Why the jail cell is not same as in movie?

    • @youtuuba
      @youtuuba  3 года назад

      Dhk Rock, because the movie director and/or producer thought it would look better, or be more visually effective, to show rows of cells facing each other across a wide aisle, but at this prison all cells faced outwards towards the outer walls. So they built cells on a set (but in a warehouse in the town near this prison) to film those scenes. The majority of prison scenes WERE filmed here, both inside and outside the building. Also, the cell walls here are clearly not a type that could be tunneled through, and since the plot depends on the tunneling, they needed to portray the cell scenes differently.

      Nope. I doubt if there is a prison anywhere that allows even 'good' inmates circulate freely in a complex structure while tourists are milling around. Keeping track of the prisoners, and avoiding 'tourists' from passing illicit items to prisoners would be a nightmare. And the kind of work being done on the prison is specialized work, which few if any prisoners would be skilled at, or licensed to perform.
