My dad was in Mansfield during the1950's. I heard this story and many others when I was young. Scared me straight. The guy owed the barber 2 packs of smokes. The barber put a straight razor to the guys throat and spun the chair. Likewise, my dad said he would have court in the street than ever go back.

I served 41 months there in the early 80s, I was 135 grand.
Lot of people never knew this was where Ohios 1st electric chair was n also where the movie Shawshank Redemption was filmed.
For anyone that has served time in Mansfield just know you are allowed too take your family for free through the prison during Halloween Haunted Tours every year.

I feel like after the first warden passed who played classical music for the inmates to calm them down had a place in everyone’s heart but after he passed they got new guards and stuff it got out of control and that’s why they did what they did because the prison wasn’t the same without the first warden.

My Grandfather spent time of the Mansfield Reformatory in his youth. He was there on 2 seperate occasions the last time held until he was 21.
He would not talk about his time there.

I spent years with my own paranormal investigation company. I tend not to listen to stories pre entering a building as stories get in your head and corrupt thought processing. You start hearing and seeing things due to the stories in your head. Old buildings, let alone run down buildings make noise…it’s not paranormal, it’s age. I’ve been to facilities where I have been pushed, scratched and even had a whisper in my ear, but have never actually seen a ghost. Most cold spots could mean a few reasons, old building drafts or even displaced air moved in by your own motion. As far as feeling paranoid as if someone is watching you, most facilities are old with old pipes, so slight gas leaks cause headaches, nausea and even hallucinations and paranoia. I am looking forward to visiting Mansfield very soon.

Very interesting that it seems the movie used little tidbits of info from real life. Like the classical music being played and the guard named Red. Very cool!

My uncle worked there. So many prisoners died. They were tortured by the guards, my uncle included. He'd brag to anyone that would listen about how they'd "Take care" of the inmates.

My wife and and I visited here 9 /26/2020 while using the men’s room I caught a movement behind me, not concerned I washed my hands and decided to check under the stalls there was nothing , my wife also needed to use the the ladies room so she went in I did not tell her what happened. I didn’t want to freak her out, when she came out I ask her if anyone followed me into the restroom she said no. While walking through the bottom floor of west block my wife said she had 2 small black orbs buzz by her, she initially thought they were flies but we didn’t see any flies anywhere else in the reformatory

Just for historical accuracy, what was the name of the 14 year old boy you referenced being killed in the basement and when were guards torturing inmates in the chapel? Just curious where you got your information from? Thank you.

I just came back home from Inkcarceration 2024 there at the reformatory, did the VIP tour, got the strangest feeling walking through that place, the despair and raw angry energy. There was one particular cell, it had the single word “here” carved into the wall above the cots. There may at one time been more but that was all that has survived. Does anybody know about that cell or who it housed?

There were more deaths than the 200 or so that you mention. Over 300 died in the 1930 fire alone.

Now today 2024 I see prisons like Mansfield reformatory there is one here in Arizona that is closed down as well n off the cost of California those was real prisons today it's a luxury.

I'm not sure what all to point out that is completely incorrect about this. It'd be easier to list what was right. You really need to do your research unless all your content is merely inaccurate and fictional.
