Look at teams this season like the Browns, Saints and Falcons who have all seen really good play form their defenses yet are at or barely above a .500 record because they aren’t scoring. Your defense can’t be awful and you expect to win but if you have an offense that can put up in the mid 20s every week and a defense that can do well enough to keep teams around that same amount of points you will more often than not win a lot of games. Look even at the Super Bowl. Both teams scored 30+. The Chiefs defense stepped up in the second half and played a major part of the win but the defense was never an elite defense. The offense was obviously very good the entire season. The eagles defense had been one of the top in the league the entire season and their offense was obviously very good as well. But notice how a defense that had been one of the best in the league the entire season wasn’t able to stifle all the scoring when the offense they were playing was led by an elite QB. If they didn’t have a good offense they’d have been pummeled but because they also had a really good offense their defense didn’t have to be expected to somehow keep a Mahomes from scoring which isn’t going to happen but simply to get some key stops that allowed for their talented offense to get enough of an edge to win like KC did. But if the team can’t score they’ll not see any serious contention because even Mahomes at his worst is almost always going to score at least 20 points.

James Jones is the true gem of this show. He needs either to become a permanent fixture, or needs a show developed around his style along with Shady perhaps, they go hard at each other but it feels like its all love.
Here’s the thing. You need a great TEAM. You win championships with great defenses. But you also need to score points. A good offense needs to score above 20 points consistently, that’s easy to do if you have a semi good offense. A good defense will keep the opposing side down and wear out the strongest of offenses. Keep that offense below 20 and you will win games.
I'm with James on this one. You do not necessarily need a generational QB to win superbowls (ala Eli Manning, Nick Foles, Joe Flacco, etc.). You build up the culture and the team first and then you can try and find your QB. All you need to do is get into the playoffs, then anything can happen (Eagles with Foles, 9-7 Giants, etc.). You up your chances up going on a lucky playoff run the more times you are in the playoffs, which involves needing a consistently solid TEAM to do it.
Need a top defense though. Can't have a defense who gets trampled over running the ball. They need tackles desperately. LB's are also weak. Defensive backs can't tackle either.

@@elilandrum2017 I think that even if he's just decent, the Raiders still end up with a top 10 pick. That would still leave them within striking range of one of the top 4 QB's in a stacked QB class..even if they have to make a trade to move up a few spots. If he's bad, they'll get a shot at one of the top 3 QB...and if he balls out, then they can focus on fortifying the trenches.
He was a 6th rounder. But clearly finding your franchise QB that becomes a HOF player and wins tons of superbowls in late rounds of the draft has been extremely common throughout the history of the game and not a rare anomaly that has been spoken of so many times due to how amazing it was to have drafted arguably the greatest QB ever in the 6th round because his intangibles and mindset are things that draft measurements don’t account for and led to a generational player playing far above his physical abilities like Tom did. Of the 57 super bowls in league history a QB drafted in the first round has won 31 of them. The rounds other than the first with the highest number of wins is round 6 with 8 and round 3 with 7. No other round has more than 3. And those two rounds obviously have an inflated total considering 4/7 in round three are Joe Montana and 7/8 in round 6 are Tom Brady. As for round 4 like the rookie? 1. What does this indicate? That throughout the history of the game clearly the most success as measured by winning superbowls is with QBs that teams pick highly because they demonstrate the most skill and upside to invest your franchise on. Arguing for a late round guy by pointing to Tom is nothing more than saying that because a couple teams were able to hit the jackpot with a guy that wasn’t the lauded prospect in the draft because those two men were simply the anomolies that many consider to be the two best to ever play and nobody predicted to accomplish anything close to what they did is a strong basis to plot the future of your franchise because in the 57 seasons we’ve had a superbowl there happened to be two guys who accomplished something historical. It isn’t the sexy argument but clearly over half of all superbowls have been won by the stereotypical talent evaluation process of picking the best guy available and hoping he lives up to it and maybe placing your future that you will be the third in the history of the game to find the diamond that nobody else was able to see that becomes elite isn’t the best bet to make. But who knows it s happened twice in nearly 60 years so it’s theoretically possible 🙃
To be successful in the NFL you need a lot of different things but a generational QB is not 1 the Ravens beat the Giants in the Super Bowl and there QB was Trent Dilfer and the Giants QB was Kerry Collins not generational

I hate the stupid "generational QB" argument. There's they are called "generational". It means that they come once in a generation. By definition, they are rare. So, while you hope you can land one, what the Raiders need to do is build a good team. Maybe AOC can be a solid QB until they find "the one". He can turn out to be a great player. Who knows? But we won't know if we don't start him. As a Raiders fan, I've seen a lot of bad Raiders teams. But this year has to be the lowest of the low. We need to truly start building something. Because we have talented players and their talent shouldn't be wasted.
I hear you, James Jones. But I’m a raider fan. And when Dale Rio was there, we had one of the historically bad defects defense. Khalil Mack was there right around 2016 the 12 in four season that you speak of our defense couldn’t stop a cold, the whole Dell Rio experience, but we need a better drafting team. We might get one player every five or six drafts.
This is the best sports talk show on TV, period. The culture and the characters on this show are head and shoulders over any show on TV: This show works, and it just clicks on all cylinders.
I think it's still early talking new coach without seeing what A. Pierce can do. By end of the year we'll know if you need a new coach or coordinator. Even if AOC cooks, you still have to draft another QB, let JG and Hoyer go and possibly get a quality #2 to have 3 QB's that compete for QB1.
That guy just ughhhh Aiden !? Wow give the kid a chance . AOC had a terrific preseason and despite ridiculously horrible blocking almost brought us back against LAC . The team is going to rally around him and he's going to shock alot of people
Nahhh you don't "have to" have a generational QB or great head coach to win games. Even the so-called greats can falter on any given Sunday. You just need to be well-balanced with chemistry. Good defense, good offense, and good coaching can beat the greats depending on the matchups and execution.
As soon as Raiders start winning, people will realize they had Davante Adams, Josh Jacobs, Hunter Renfrow, Jakobi Meyers, Michael Mayer, Tre Tucker all along. Its not rocket science, O'Connell can sling it too.
You're right, it's not...but the problem is what they don't have...a reliable OL. Outside of Kolton Miller, the Raiders OL is comprised of guys who woudn't start for the vast majority of NFL teams. You can have all the skill position talent in the world, but it won't amount to much if they're having to rely on an OL with too many players with practice squad level talent on it. Outside of a lack of effective leadership, this was McDaniels and Zieglers greatest failure...they focused too much on skill positions instead of trying to solidify the trenches first.
They are only saying Pierce will do well because they are black analysts and he is a black coach. They can't afford to lose black viewers by saying anything bad about Pierce. First Take does the same thing.
Only one man on that stage was giving my Raiders the respect they deserve. Can't wait to see their reactions when we shock the world! RN4L🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
You don't need a generational QB to be competitive. If you have a strong front office you can put together a competitive team without a Mahomes or a Burrow or an Allen

i dont understand arguing and dismissing O'Connell at QB, making the assumption that he's not going to do anything because he's a rookie...Well Herbert was a rookie when he got the nod over tyrod taylor and has been successful. Brock Purdy was a replacement rookie QB last year and went to the playoffs after being drafted as Mr. Irrelevant... O'connell was drafted higher. I dont know if O'Connell will get it done, we'll see... but to be dismissive already - nope! Give the guy a chance and then pass judgement
As a Raiders fan, this was a great week. McDaniels isn't a real HC, benching Jimmy G is a good move. Also as a Raiders fan, I am skeptical of a positive long term turnaround until Mark Davis stops meddling so much. Hopefully they hire a solid coach and give him some job security - and not only because they are still paying the last 2 HCs 😂😭
Lions did it right they slowly built the defense and o line and have a good qb but no top wr wr is the last piece you need i dont care who is your qb if you cant protect him or get turnovers and the defense is awful for the Raiders they cant stop the run thats why the bears put up 30 points it wasn't deep balls it was the run and small passes also Raiders cap is one of the worst in the league they have no cash to build a team any time soon they need to draft linemen on both sides and cbs and linebackers thats atleast 10 starting positions.
QB's right place, right time, right system, Jeff Hostetler, trent Dilfer, Mark Rypien, Joe Flacco, Brad Johnson, (Eli Manning?), Russell Willson, Nick Foles. Eli has the same amount of wins as losses, but those superbowl wins Look amazing! Except for Eli, I don't think they were generational QB's.
A top five pick doesn't mean you a "generational QB." Besides, the Chiefs have this generation's "generational QB." Do you need a "generational QB" to win? Was Nick Foles a "generational QB?" Did he win the super bowl? How about Eli Manning? Was he a mythical "generational QB?" Is Matt Stafford a "generational QB?" How about Russell Wilson? These people all talk like fans instead of professionals with professional experience, just spouting catchphrases.
Agreed. I was also asking myself "Is Joe Burrow even a generational QB?" (Maybe I'm missing something) but when I think of generational players I think of players who could do something significantly better than the other players of their generation. Using that definition, the only current generational QBs I think of are Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson. The rest (in that generation) I see as being really really good.
How different will it be for the Raiders w/AP as Head Coach? Well there certainly aren’t gonna be ANY more FGs in the 4th quarter, with 4th & fours from anybody’s 8yrd line, and just 2: 25 on the clock! I know they’ll be no more of That garbage!
If Derek Carr ever had a top 10 defense they would have made the playoffs every year that he was there . All you haters can let that sink in real quick
Don't expect much then the disappointment won't be as bad. This is what we need to do to get this organization headed in the right direction. KC eagles 49ers teams with consistency they don't change their roster every year and they are always the team's to beat. Let's get this right Raiders
Someone get James Jones a medal of honor. He is 100000% correct. Build that defense that hasn't been good in 20 years. Which is exactly how long they haven't been in a super bowl or won a playoff game. Build a defensive identity.

Agreed. O'Connell may very well be a solid - Jared Goff style - QB.
@@jeanfourcade That’s all you need because you have Davante Adams, Hunter Renfrow, Josh Jacobs, Michael Mayer so you have weapons on offense
James Jones is the true gem of this show. He needs either to become a permanent fixture, or needs a show developed around his style along with Shady perhaps, they go hard at each other but it feels like its all love.
James is right. You don't need a mvp level QB. You need a good defense or a good QB.
#89 Speaking the TRUTH💪🏿🖤👊🏿
Here’s the thing. You need a great TEAM. You win championships with great defenses. But you also need to score points. A good offense needs to score above 20 points consistently, that’s easy to do if you have a semi good offense. A good defense will keep the opposing side down and wear out the strongest of offenses. Keep that offense below 20 and you will win games.
Loving this Praying Always your Right
He talking that talk….. you don’t need a generational talent at quarterback.
@@TheBlackHole2024 That's why Raider fans should be hype about Antonio Pierce. Dude bleeds defense and knows what one looks like
@@crenshaw46 True but you still need players. They have improved some but still weak. Is he gonna take over the defense. The Bears game was despicable. Totally trounced and run over.
Playing the kid is brilliant he is either going to show you he's the guy, He's the bridge or he's going to be terrible and they end up with a high pick to get a QB in the deepest QB draft in year
Exactly...it's a win, win situation.
what if he's 50/50 and plays just well enough to get yall out of a top QB pick
@@elilandrum2017 I think that even if he's just decent, the Raiders still end up with a top 10 pick. That would still leave them within striking range of one of the top 4 QB's in a stacked QB class..even if they have to make a trade to move up a few spots. If he's bad, they'll get a shot at one of the top 3 QB...and if he balls out, then they can focus on fortifying the trenches.
@@edwinramos4910 Thats true, I forgot you can always trade up thanks for the explanation.
@@elilandrum2017 You're welcome
Does Tom Brady count as a generational QB? Just asking because he was a 5th rounder who started as a backup, and well, you know how it went…
I think he was a 6th of 7th rounder actually, great point lets go AOC
6th round 199th pick
To be successful in the NFL you need a lot of different things but a generational QB is not 1 the Ravens beat the Giants in the Super Bowl and there QB was Trent Dilfer and the Giants QB was Kerry Collins not generational
The last 20 yrs the Dolphins has been just as bad as the Raiders. What is Joy talking about?
Gotta stop thinking top QBs come in the top 5 only Mahomes , lamar , Rodgers , Wilson , Dak , Kirk all QBs outside the top 10
Give my man Aidan O’Connell a chance!
The Raiders offense has been a ticking time bomb; now the fuse has been lit for this Sundays game with the removal of the Oxygen-less Former Head Coach
It’s not about getting an expensive guy to play qb .. build a development system that allows players to elevate each other thus is a qb goes down another steps in
Antonio Pierce was a baller for the Giants. It’s coming back to me now. Yeah I remember using the Chargers and LT back in Madden 06 and just *DUSTING* off Pierce for a TD. 🥲 sorry Pierce your a Raider now so the rivalry begins 😂.

Derek Carr never had a top 20 defense in his tenure for the Raiders. But what do everybody say? Well he never won a playoff game.
People like Acho who uses Wins and Losses as QB stat will have you believe that Jimmy G is better than Carr. How does that look now?

I think the raiders should keep Antonio pierce and go drafting trade and or cut Jimmy G and let's get cracking
James talking that realness
It was hilarious to see James put that man on blast 😂😭
I hate the stupid "generational QB" argument. There's they are called "generational". It means that they come once in a generation. By definition, they are rare. So, while you hope you can land one, what the Raiders need to do is build a good team. Maybe AOC can be a solid QB until they find "the one". He can turn out to be a great player. Who knows? But we won't know if we don't start him. As a Raiders fan, I've seen a lot of bad Raiders teams. But this year has to be the lowest of the low. We need to truly start building something. Because we have talented players and their talent shouldn't be wasted.
Bingo
I hear you, James Jones. But I’m a raider fan. And when Dale Rio was there, we had one of the historically bad defects defense. Khalil Mack was there right around 2016 the 12 in four season that you speak of our defense couldn’t stop a cold, the whole Dell Rio experience, but we need a better drafting team. We might get one player every five or six drafts.
This is the best sports talk show on TV, period. The culture and the characters on this show are head and shoulders over any show on TV: This show works, and it just clicks on all cylinders.
What about kyler Murray. He still has potential and can at least find his receivers.
I think they already have that with O'Connell and pearce
That guy just ughhhh Aiden !?
Wow give the kid a chance .
AOC had a terrific preseason and despite ridiculously horrible blocking almost brought us back against LAC .
The team is going to rally around him and he's going to shock alot of people
Looking forward to seeing him step up and shoot his shot! Can't be worse than Jimmy...Monday was humiliating.
Agree with James jones here. Build that defense around Maxx C . Then keep searching for that QB .
Jones gets it. I loved how he went down the list of who is and is not a generational talent.
Was Eli Manning a generational QB? No but still won two super bowls. Proving the fact that you don't need a generational QB to win.
I'd take a good disciplined, smart team over just a great qb.
The Patrick Mahomes store 😂😂😂😂 joy be funny for real. 😂
Great segment
Nahhh you don't "have to" have a generational QB or great head coach to win games. Even the so-called greats can falter on any given Sunday. You just need to be well-balanced with chemistry. Good defense, good offense, and good coaching can beat the greats depending on the matchups and execution.
Jones hit the nail on the head this segment
Not a single one of these people watched a Raiders preseason game.
Pierce gonna have ice cube sing the nation anthem 😂
You don't need a generational QB to be competitive. If you have a strong front office you can put together a competitive team without a Mahomes or a Burrow or an Allen
Tell me, what if Aiden for the rest of the season is great?

“It’s not easy to find a generational quarterback” 💯
Our mindset is back. We haven't looked this good since 02 .
Looks to me like a Mike Singletary type hire. I hope he is more than a rah rah short term fix.
i dont understand arguing and dismissing O'Connell at QB, making the assumption that he's not going to do anything because he's a rookie...Well Herbert was a rookie when he got the nod over tyrod taylor and has been successful.
RAIDERS GREAT QB WILL BE O'CONNELL
As a Raiders fan, this was a great week. McDaniels isn't a real HC, benching Jimmy G is a good move. Also as a Raiders fan, I am skeptical of a positive long term turnaround until Mark Davis stops meddling so much. Hopefully they hire a solid coach and give him some job security - and not only because they are still paying the last 2 HCs 😂😭
Michigan State, Jim Harbaugh at the end of the season definitely he will come to the Las Vegas Raiders facilities and sign a four year contract.😮
I remember one player's coach saying , I ask only three things from you show up on time, do your Job and play hard when I tell you to
Lions did it right they slowly built the defense and o line and have a good qb but no top wr wr is the last piece you need i dont care who is your qb if you cant protect him or get turnovers and the defense is awful for the Raiders they cant stop the run thats why the bears put up 30 points it wasn't deep balls it was the run and small passes also Raiders cap is one of the worst in the league they have no cash to build a team any time soon they need to draft linemen on both sides and cbs and linebackers thats atleast 10 starting positions.
They got Aman ra st brown
Let's go Aiden O'Connell.... just protect him.

Hate when people (JOY today) says the niners can get away without having a top QB because of thier defense…HAVE TOU SEEN THEM LATELY AT ALL?!?!?!?
Don't expect much then the disappointment won't be as bad. This is what we need to do to get this organization headed in the right direction. KC eagles 49ers teams with consistency they don't change their roster every year and they are always the team's to beat. Let's get this right Raiders
I just can't deal with how absolutely FIRE Joy Taylor is.
Someone get James Jones a medal of honor. He is 100000% correct. Build that defense that hasn't been good in 20 years. Which is exactly how long they haven't been in a super bowl or won a playoff game. Build a defensive identity.
Crazy two think with all the bs that happened a couple years ago with losing our head coach and wide receiver but the raiders still managed to go to the playoffs.. Alot off fans will hate but as of at this moment who would you rather have leading the team Jimmy G or Derek Carr. Personally I think Carr had fought through 9 years off playing with a trash defense in my opinion never had a real chance
