  • I recently checked out a new 2019 Trek Fuel EX from my (very awesome) local bike shop Trek of Charlotte - Lake Norman. The staff spent lots of time helping figure out what model would work best for me... and we finally arrived on the Fuel EX for my riding style and budget. After a 20 mile demo ride around Lake Norman State Park in Troutman, NC... I had some opinions about the new 2019 Trek EX 8.

    At 4:16, I thought the same on my first few rides. As I began to understand the riding characteristics of the Fuel EX8 and its RE:aktiv shock absorber, I realized that the shock stays firm during pedaling and while riding over small bumpiness. That is part of its magic - maintaining pedaling efficiency but instantly transforming to a plush reaction for larger obstacles and more forceful impacts. It is a design compromise. To be squishy in small bumps would allow for much pedal bob.
    The more I ride my bike, the less my butt is on the saddle. Standing on the pedals has many benefits; one is that it smooths out fast sections with small bumps by utilizing nature's awesome suspension system: ankles, knees, and hips.
    Also, try reducing the amount of air in the fork, rear shock and both tires.

      gato ryak After year our so on the bike, I really feel like I have it dialed in... and you are right, a little less air in the shocks and tires were a big part of that.

    I love this bike ...I have had it for for 3 weeks
    I love it .....it’s a beautiful bike
    It’s solid ....weight is non issue .....lose 2 kg of body weight and your riding the same lite bikes
    Everyone thinks bike weight is crucial .....it’s easier to drop kg of your own body than spend another 3000 bucks to get 2kg. Get off the pizza man,
    This bike is solid all round ....it handled the really rocky sections of my trails well ...really well and it climbed well
    It’s fast and responsive thru tight rocky sections also
    I got the pink colour striped bike it’s froggin awesome looking bike ...it’s black with trek logo in pink

    I really want to buy the trek remedy 8 2019, but I’ve heard that people have problems with not being able to move the bars around enough due to the knock block. What do you think of it?
    Thanks!

    Great video! Just like you, I am riding a hardtail Trek Superfly 9.7 Carbon that I LOVE. I want to get into a full suspension bike and like this exact one....so how are you making out with it now? Please advise if you have time! All the best!

    • @wearesleepingsoundly
      @wearesleepingsoundly  5 лет назад +1

      Hi James! This bike has been fantastic for me... a year later, I still am surprised how much faster it is when I return to a trail for the first time on this bike (our massive local trail system rotates the direction of the one-way trails every year, so I'm hitting a lot of segments now that are reversed from last year, and breaking PRs constantly). With that being said, the bike I rode before the EX8 was nowhere near the quality of your Superfly Carbon... so definitely go into the Fuel with the idea that it will feel like a tank initially. Even with its relative heft, it is nimble and climbs great. The shocks are of a good enough quality that they can really be dialed in to make a big difference in the feel of the bike.
      So far I'v not had any quality issues with the bike, and I have no regrets about making this purchase. Hope this helps!

    Sleeping Soundly,
    I am thinking about buying the same bike, but my local shop has a 2018 version of this bike in their demo line (which they are offering a great price for). Do you know if there was any significant changes between the 2018 and 2019 models?
    Thanks!

      @wearesleepingsoundly  5 лет назад

      Craig Shields Hi Craig. I do know one of the big changes from 2018-2019 was the switch from the SRAM Guide series brakes to the Shimano Deore brakeset... while I have never ridden the Guide brakes, I think the brakes on the 2019 model are phenomenal.

    I’m in Korea. My buddy is a Trek dealer. My previous bike (I’m riding a tweener....an old Santa Cruz Heckler) was an Ibis Mojo, almost full XTR parts. Some of the trails I ride are a bit twistier than what I saw in this vid. Will I be disappointed with a 29-er? No demo rides available in my size. How was it for handling, maneuvering, and climbing? Nice review, btw. P.S., I’m in good shape, able to ride an hour about 2-4 times a week, with some good lung-busting climbs, but I’m pushing 60. Is this the bike for me? Thanks.

    • @wearesleepingsoundly
      @wearesleepingsoundly  6 лет назад

      Hello! I do not think you will be disappointed with the 29er. I will have a much more in depth review, and be able to show this bike on more technical terrain in my next video (I filmed this video while riding it at as a "demo" bike, so I was riding conservatively on less technical trails). Now that I actually own it, I've been able to ride it much more aggressively, and it has really impressed me. The Mino-Link suspension also allows you to tweak the bike in ways that I was not able to adjust my previous hardtail 29er, which may help with your tighter/twistier trails. Stay tuned for another video in the near future regarding my long term impressions (which are mostly spectacular). Stay tuned!

      Thanks for the swift reply. I look forward to your in-depth review, and ride footage. I'm curious why they don't have a 9.8 model showing yet (for just about anything). Their website is a dog to navigate. They keep changing the order of bikes showing on the page. I also wish they'd roll out their bikes en masse. Still no Remedy showing, but that might be more DH-oriented than I need. Happy trails!

      Pascal Heisterborg Mine is quiet while I’m applying power, but I do think the “free-wheel” noise is much louder on this bike is louder than any mountain bike group set I’ve ever owned. It doesn’t sound bad though, if you have a “rattle” or something that isn’t a regular coasting sound, then you may have a problem.

    • @wearesleepingsoundly
      @wearesleepingsoundly  6 лет назад +1

      Marty Bee I’m coming from a 29er that I always felt had bars that were “too wide”. (I rode a hard tail stump jumper from 2000-2014 and really grew accustomed to those bars... the transition to the “beach bars” on my X-Cal never really suited me). With that being said, I find the bars on the Fuel EX 8 to be perfectly capable of moving the bike around, without feeling like giant outriggers...

      Iggy Monterrubio Hi Iggy, while I wouldn’t consider every section of the Itusi system a “family friendly” trail, I’ll admit the footage in this video is pretty tame (most of it is riding with my wife... and she was not in a hurry). I also had reservations about really pushing a $3000+ demo bike that wasn’t “mine”. At this point I’ve owned the bike for over a year, and I’ve done some really awesome stuff on it. I will be posting a long term wrap up video in the near future which will show the bike in more aggressive terrain.
