There are so many ways in which this movie satirizes the absurdity of dogma, both religious and political, and how it stands in the way of a critically thinking society. The "Splitters!" scene is a perfect example. Life of Brian is their best film work.
Both Holy Grail and Life of Brian are brilliant satires because the Pythons studied Christianity in school, so they knew the source material (if you will) very well. That produces the best satire. On the DVD for Life of Brian, they said when they were looking through the Bible for who/what to riff on, they realized Jesus really didn't do anything they could spoof, so they had Brian's life mirror Jesus' timeline.
I was lucky enough to grow up watching Monty Python on the TV in the seventies as well as having a good many of their vinyl LPs to listen to. Even now I still enjoy watching & listening to them. I have to admit "The Life of Brian" & "The Meaning of Life" are two of my favourite MP films. Thanks for this.
One of the things that makes me laugh the hardest about this scene - is that one of the guys carrying the huge boulder at the end is wearing eye shadow and Mascara XD
Women were not allowed to stonings, hence the disguises. I don't think I ever cried harder than when I laughed seeing "...The Holy Grail" in the theater in the late 1970s. The "monks in repentance" scene just before the "She's a Witch" routine literally put me on the carpeted floor on my back, laughing so hard I could not breathe (I had an aisle seat). Maybe the funniest thing ever. Cool video reaction to "Brian". Thanks.
The Pythons were formed from college friends in two groups who joined for Monty Python's Flying Circus for the BBC in 69/70 or thereabouts. Before this, each 'team' did their own things like 'Do Not Adjust Your Set' and 'At Last, the 1948 Show'. From the latter, you should see 'The Four Yorkshiremen' sketch or 'The Mice Laugh Softly, Sweet Charlotte'. The 1948 Show also featured a couple of members of The Goodies who sometimes worked together with them but also had their own show, 'The Goodies' which would be worth reacting to.

Brilliant!! The first time I saw The Life of Brian was in a cinema in Spain. The movie was in English with Spanish subtitles and a bunch of us expat foreigners were laughing 'til we cried while the locals were totally confused as to why we were laughing. Some of them didn't even stay 'til the end. Mind you, it probably wasn't the most appropriate movie to screen in catholic Spain 40 years ago.
Of course the “Parrot Sketch” ... my personal favorite is the “Hungarian Phrasebook”. The chocolate company one is pretty great. And the “Self Defense Class”!!! That one is CLASSIC!
The Life of Brian is probably the funniest Monty Python film, in my opinion. It has since been elevated, in my mind, after some specialists, in language, determined the proper Roman letter V was pronounced as we say Y, today, so instead of Veni, Vidi, Vici, I come, I see, I conquer, it's probably pronounced Yeni, Yidi, Yici. They got this understanding from two sources of evidence. The first was from an actual recording of a Roman Emperor, I cannot remember which, and from some graffiti in Pompeii. The recording, which was captured by accident, had been dismissed, by Catholic experts, by saying this emperor was known to speak with a lisp, but the graffiti, in Pompeii sort of puts the actual pronunciation argument to rest. It's all a video, here on RUclips, I think, and when I saw this all I could think of was the graffiti scene from Life of Brian. Heck, that might be more accurate than it was funny, and it was hilarious. ruclips.net/video/_enn7NIo-S0/видео.html

Two such campaigners , one a bishop, the other a 'popular tv philosopher' were invited to a debate on tv with John Clees and Michael Palin. Their argument became increasingly peculiar until John Clees realised that although the complainers said they had seen the film, they had arrived late at the cinema showing, missed the exposition at the beginning, and got the whole plot wrong. But see it for yourself here: ruclips.net/video/ZYMpObbt2rs/видео.html

OMG, I'm gad this was in recommendations. This was the very first scene I ever saw of "Life of Brian" and I can recite it. It's so refreshing seeing Monty Python through another's eyes, who've not seen some of this before. Looking forward to the others!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail was their first movie and was done with practically no budget whatsoever. Life of Brian was done with a much larger budget and after they were more "established" with movies. For that reason I would recommend watching The Holy Grail first, then Life of Brian (but definitely watch both).
fish slapping scene and hands down the greatest python sketch is the penguin on top of the tv. Ere where do to Penguins come from I dunno do i...burma or the restaurant sketch
There's a good video of john cleese and Michael Palin on a chat show arguing with a few bishops, I think the life of Brian was banned for a while in Ireland because they thought it was blasphemous.
I think the lads did a great job of being polite, respectful and keeping their composure in this interview, whilst the religious old farts were rude and obnoxious, and made absolute tits of themselves.
Ok, now you got to check out the Biggus Dickus scene, the Dead Parrot sketch, the Argument Clinic sketch, the "I'm going to give you a damn good thrashing" scene from Fawlty Towers, and the whole Life of Brian movie.
Don’t forget the Life of Brian, The Holy Grail and another one Jabberwokky are all films. The TV series was called Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Also Fawlty Towers is another gem.
Legends. The interesting fact about the movie, is that George Harrison found them the money to make it. They have left their mark on comedy, and all for the better. The song from The Meaning of Life , Every Sperm Is Sacred , is the one I’d recommend.
Graham Jones he mortgaged his house to make a production company just to make it cos they couldn’t find one to fund it. They made Time Bandits, too. Great film.
Hello, have you ever heard of ‘Big Train’? A British sketch show involving a young Simon Pegg. Check out ‘big train spoons’ and ‘big train do you speak English’ loads of other good sketches. Too many to mention.
Pretty sure they are taking the piss from all public servants and security guards. Makes it funnier if you think of a bunch of guys in orange watching one guy poke at a hole with a shovel. Or a pair of mall cops.
My recommended viewing order: Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Baron Munchausen, and Erik The Viking... then delve into the Monty Python TV show. Yes, I know the last two movies are not technically MP, but they are brilliant collabs, with refined Python humor and fun cameos. Also, don't forget to dive deeper into Red Dwarf at some point. Thanks for the great reactions... much love!
This film was my dad's favourite film. His party piece was that he could quote the whole film from beginning to end pr any particular scene. Apart from it being awesome on it's own everytime I see it I can hear my dad saying the lines and splitting his sides.
@marco conti he was. He also won a bit of money once by reciting the lines (not words) from the end to the beginning. He used to say that he knew it forward and backwards! Ie hes a naughty boy. Hes not the messiah.
@marco conti it's ok. Hes been gone 25 years, but every time I put this movie on I can hear him howling with laughter pointing out his favourite bits. (What have the Romans ever done for us, Roman's go home and Welese Waddewick) it's almost like hes here with me.
@marco contiThanks for sharing it just shows how great humour brings people together, even during hard times. It took me years to be able to watch this film again but now I watch it whenever I want to feel close to dad. Its been a life saver recently as I csn hear him telling me, 'life is jolly rotten, there's something you forgotten" as we look out of the living room window for 5 months.
@marco conti when this situation does get hard, I put on certain records (Aladdin Sane, Ziggy Stardust and The Who) or watch certain films like MP and it is like my Dad is just in the kitchen making himself a cuppa and everything is better. Sense memory is a wonderful thing!
Whatever Monty Python movie you watch, understand that even their movies were basically a series of stand alone comedy skits. Some of the movies had a better theme continuity like "The Search For The Holy Grail" but even it was a series of sketch comedy skits. Still, funny stuff!
Yay! Monty Python! I think you should start with ‘And Now For Something Completely Different’ it’s a film version of some of their best sketches from the tv show. Follow that with Holy Grail, Life Of Brian then Meaning Of Life. That’s the order they were released.

@ That is true, but only as stupid as the ones that think the rights of religion are unique to religion.
OMG, I'm gad this was in recommendations. This was the very first scene I ever saw of "Life of Brian" and I can recite it. It's so refreshing seeing Monty Python through another's eyes, who've not seen some of this before. Looking forward to the others!
YOU SHOULD DO THE WHOLE FILM REACTION. YEAH.
Dude you have to watch the full film and Monty Pythons Holy Grail too you wil be in stitches throughout.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail was their first movie and was done with practically no budget whatsoever. Life of Brian was done with a much larger budget and after they were more "established" with movies. For that reason I would recommend watching The Holy Grail first, then Life of Brian (but definitely watch both).
I second that
Im so glad you're going to watch the films. I wish i could watch them again for the first time. You are in for a real treat...and sore cheeks.
This is my all-time favorite movie by Monty Python and one of my favorite scenes. The best scenes take place in the first half of the movie.
Great reaction as usual... life of Brian... what a film...the opening song even has me in stitches...know it word for word lol.
as a brit i know all these comedians you react to , but its a real tonic seeing you react , it really cheers me up when i am feeling down!
Looks like the spare seat has got a seat belt,...With some of the hysterical stuff you watch you will need that !!
Seen that film 50 times, never gets old.I love the graphitti scene.
And the two Roman guards at the end looking like. "Wtf am i here watching this for.....fucking Emperor."
"you going to the stoning?.... local boy should be a good'un"
Have you all forgot?....Monty pythons, most famous ever clip...is "the dead parrot sketch".....beautiful plummage!!!...lol
It was pining for the fjords.
fish slapping scene and hands down the greatest python sketch is the penguin on top of the tv. Ere where do to Penguins come from I dunno do i...burma or the restaurant sketch
Some other Monty Python's Flying Circus to check out: "Ministry of Silly Walks", "Cheese Shop", "Argument Clinic" "Upper-Class Twit of the Year".
I think I laughed just as much as you did when I first saw it 30 years ago. Good to know some humor still works.
Ok, now you got to check out the Biggus Dickus scene, the Dead Parrot sketch, the Argument Clinic sketch, the "I'm going to give you a damn good thrashing" scene from Fawlty Towers, and the whole Life of Brian movie.
The opening scene from the same film of the sermon on the mount is also worth a watch :)
Blessed are the cheesemakers!
@@tammysquire6992 and who hit your nose....Goliath's big brother? 🤣
Don’t forget the Life of Brian, The Holy Grail and another one Jabberwokky are all films. The TV series was called Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Also Fawlty Towers is another gem.
The Witch scene from The Grail is too funny as well, dig it up. My boys love it.
Great film.
So many one liners, too...
"I say you're the Messiah, and I should know; I've followed a few!"
I spit in your general direction 😂😂😂 the holy grail. I love your reactions
Their take on the dead parrot scene is also fantastic!
The greatest comedy movie ever made
Your reaction to this scene was priceless, I first saw this film over twenty years ago and I still love it.
Hello, have you ever heard of ‘Big Train’? A British sketch show involving a young Simon Pegg. Check out ‘big train spoons’ and ‘big train do you speak English’ loads of other good sketches. Too many to mention.
Also, ‘big train work place wanking’
Watching this made me think that you just HAVE TO watch FAWLTY TOWERS...!!!
I have it on my list bro thanks =]
Roman guards are like "WTF is up with these people?" "I dunno man, too lazy to care, this shade and wall just hit the spot."
Pretty sure they are taking the piss from all public servants and security guards. Makes it funnier if you think of a bunch of guys in orange watching one guy poke at a hole with a shovel. Or a pair of mall cops.
The two Roman guards were like....looking so...um WTF....um..."what did you do Saturday?"
Omg - you have the best laugh! And literally anything by Monty Python will do - but the Holy Grail is my #1.😁
I dunno why, but the completely apathetic Roman soldiers always crack me up.
The scene of the naked man in a hole that had taken a vow of silence was hilarious as well. R.I.P. Terry Jones.
Yeti tracker 66 yes it’s a Miracle of Comedy
Life of Brian is the funniest movie ever made.
It is brilliant.
Thanks for the great reactions... much love!
Monty Python is the best. Men pretending to be women who are pretending to be men. I love it.
I'm so glad younger people are still loving MP.
"Sorry I thought we'd started." classic
This guys laugh is worth rewatching a classic Python scene ...
My sister in law is in that scene 😃 and my brother is a Roman soldier in the house search scene
"We missed one spot!"
@@panowa8319 We found this spoon sir.
Good job.
I've seen this uncountable times but I was laughing with you again.
It’s always a warm feeling when the Americans discover Month Python.
You have a great grasp of the british sense of humour. Monty Python is a cult classic.
I love when he suspects that there is a Woman present that they all speak in high-pitched tones and then all realise and get deeper :)
Yay! Monty Python!
I think you should start with ‘And Now For Something Completely Different’ it’s a film version of some of their best sketches from the tv show. Follow that with Holy Grail, Life Of Brian then Meaning Of Life. That’s the order they were released.
... those days were so wonderful when you could joke about EVERYTHING - wonderful days.
I'm a Christian but STILL love most of your stuff! (-please don't virtually stone me commenters.. 😁!).
