I love the story of Horatio Spafford. He lost almost everything in the Chicago fire. His very young son died as well (I don't know if he died before or after the fire). He decided that he and his family would visit family in England. He sent his wife and 4 daughters ahead and he would join them later. He found out the ship had sunk. He received a telegraph from his wife that said, "I alone survived." As he was crossing the ocean to get her, he wrote the lyrics to "It Is Well" as the ship crossed near where the other ship sank. That is faith!!
So many times, Christian artists will write songs in the midst of their own pain and struggle. And those songs speak to us about our own struggles or those of our loved ones.
Your comment on people blaming God is so true. I've always been the one to tell friends that if God gave us free will we have to accept the consequences of that: it means that our lives can be effected not only by our own choices, but by the choices of others, sometimes for good, sometimes not.
There's comfort in knowing He's got control, even if we never see the map.
Very well said!!! I say that as well. I also say that we live in a fallen world and the pervading evil is a consequence of that fall. God is ultimately in control. But He gives us free will. We are the ones who decide how to exorcise that will. :)
I saw Mercy Me in concert twice. In one concert before Bart sang this song he told us why he wrote it. Apparently his song has a disease, and to have to watch your own child suffer and pray for complete healing again and again, and yet no healing comes. And how some would tell him he needs more faith, or this or that. Well Bart got tired of people telling him what he needed to do so his son would be healed. He wrote this song in response to what he and his wife have to go through watching their child suffer. 💔
This song refers to Bart’s son being diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 2. Just for perspective.

Wonderful! This song is a blessing. He is with us on the mountaintops and in the valleys. His Word tells us we will have troubles but as Believers He is our strength and grows us/stretches us in the trials. Then we look back and see His faithfulness through the storms. 🙏🏼
