Having read 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' , I came across Homenaje A Cataluña (Homage to Catalunya). The latter explains the bitter truth without any ding-dong bells and heroism ...

I finished Homage not long ago. That sure was a special kind of messed up war.

I love these old documentaries that get right to the point and go into so much detail.

George Orwell met Henry Miller on his way to Spain.
    Miller gave him a tie.
That simple gesture speaks volumes about both men.
Both understood the dangers of being sidelined by communism and fascism.
The real question to ask is 'Who's got all the money?

The scene where he gets shot in Homage is even more vividly descriptive than the part about the girl in Wigan Pier.

Perhaps this is a puerile observation but I’ve never seen such a collection of strange looking old codgers in one documentary in my life.

patience and determination, wounded, sick, tired, poorly trained, armed, supported, someone should have considered what these english might do if properly trained, equipped, lead and supplied, by 1941 the italians and germans had learned

Cant be him but there are a couple of chaps with very similar looks around the 6:33 - 6:36 mark. Itd be extraordinary because we don't have any moving pictures of Orwell (or, sadly, recordings of his voice either)

Any clue who the gentlemen from 34:20 to 35:00 (or so) is? Enjoyed what he said about journalism.
Fascinating to hear Orwell's writing near the end, about returning to an England at peace, knowing the Statesman would come out on Friday, the milk tomorrow, and so on, and that this slumber would continue until, he feared, the jarring of bombs.
    Thanks for uploading these!

A man who owns up to being a liar on screen. What makes Orwell great is his honesty, that guy says anything is acceptable if it's useful.
      Cynicism personified.

If you haven't seen it, you should read Jeffrey Meyers's essay on when he interviewed Frankford for his Orwell biography. Frankford was taken in by the police for stealing art from Spanish museums and churches. He admitted to signing phony articles written by others in order to get out of the charges. The articles claimed the POUM as fascist and that they were dealing in supplies to Franco's army.
