Why Democratic Socialism Is Gaining Popularity In The United States
Swede here:
We're NOT democratic socialists.
We have social democracy.
A free market with taxes that fund a welfare system.
Well market in EU is pretty heavily regulated (which is a good thing), so I wouldn't call it a free market.
@@darrak1 Most european staates have implemented a "Social Market Economy", which is also called the "Rhine Capitalism" and was originally founded in Germany.

Every sane person thinks Bernie is a more on.
When during the Trump administration the bottom 1/5th of wage earners had their incomes rise the fastest of all groups. That was the first time that had happened since the George W Bush administration.
Because both Trump and W. used Kennedy's theory of using lower taxes, less immigration, deregulation, and smaller government to tighten up the labor market. Which raises wages, allows mobility, allows for advancement, and gives people dignity.
Compare that to the Democrat policies of using high taxes, over regulation, open immigration, and big government to put permanent slack into the labor market. Which drives down wages and drives up housing prices at the same time, to the point tens of millions of people don't have any money left over at the end of the month. And it's the low wages at the bottom that allows the excesses at the top, causing the wealth gap.
Raising the bottom 1/5th of wage earners wealth relative to everyone else is something liberals will never be able to do because of their policies.
If Bernie actually cared about working class people, Bernie would be a Kennedy Reagan conservative.

I love it when people forget that there are different ideologies within ideologies. It's not just Capitalism and Socialism. Politics are not this simple.
Politics should be simple.
Exactly, all socialism is the same in practice, not all capitalism is. Socialism means the government controls the market. Capitalism means privately owned business, but theres anarcho capitalism, free market capitalism, regulated capitalism etc.
@Paul Drusbasky "if you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything." I'd like to be left out of it too, but it's your responsibility as an American citizen to engage in the politics and defense of this nations founding principles as outlined in the constitution and bill of rights. There is no "middle class". There are people who *have* to work and those who don't.
There are those who are unable to work do to some kind of disability and those who chose not to work because they get more money from the Government than they would get from a regular job - welfare, food stamps and e-card. I would help those who have a disability but let those starve who chose not to work - you don't work, you don't eat. I chose who gets my hard earned money, not those crooks in DC.
Not quite. The separation is between those that benefit from quantitative easing and those that don't.

@55Quirll
I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but people HAVE to work to get welfare nowadays, ever since that “ tax-and-spend Democrat”, Bill Clinton, ended “welfare as we knew it.” Even women with small children have to have a paying job. The only way a person can get welfare without working, is if he/she has SSI or SSDI pending. And, people on any form of welfare do not receive anywhere near the amount of money that many people assume they do. As for letting people starve if they won’t work, I’m glad to say there are many churches that provide free food to those in need. Or would you make that illegal?
I am wondering. I am german and we have universal healthcare. WE managed to figure out how to pay for all of that WITHOUT having 70% of Tax or Companies going bankrupt left and right....these are all just flimsy excuses because they KNOW that it would work.
Yes. It is easier to spew tropes and traffic in "innuendo" than intelligently discuss the facts. As the old saying goes: _"if you can't pound facts = pound the table."_ That is what you see vis a vis the conservative Right in America. In the late 1970s, growth in Western economies began to slow down and returns on capital began to decline. Governments came under pressure to do something about it - to create a ‘fix’ for capital. So they attacked unions and gutted labour laws in order to drive the cost of wages down, and they privatised public assets that had previously been off limits to capital - mines, railways, energy, water, healthcare, telecommunications and so on - creating lucrative opportunities for private investors.

The biggest problem with Americans when they try to deal with Scandinavian politics as a role model, they are being totally black and white thinking and getting everything wrong and getting lost in terms and FUD. The argument is always, "We cant afford this" when it comes to something that will be good for average Americans but whenever big corporations, banks, or Wall Street need a bailout we can pull it out of our ass.

To the passing neophyte reading this comment, this comment is for you. Familiarize yourself with the following terms:
*Capitalism* : A system in which the means of production are owned by a few private individuals. This manifests itself with the traditional business/corporate hierarchy; the business is owned by a group of a few very wealthy shareholders. People who call themselves capitalists might follow a very libertarian streak of beliefs, meaning that they believe there should be fewer government regulations on corporations that follow this traditional structure of ownership at the top.
*Socialism* : A system in which the means of production are owned by the public. Socialists often advocate for worker cooperatives replacing the traditional business hierarchy. Essentially, this means the business is owned by its workers rather than by its shareholders; workers can make decisions collectively/democratically as opposed to the traditional corporate structure in which CEO's and others at the top make the decisions rather than the workers. One thing to note is that markets are not exclusive to capitalism; you can have markets in a socialist economy (see "market socialism"). People who claim to be socialists often have very different beliefs regarding how they want socialism to be achieved. That is, some people want no government at all. Others want a government in place and for worker cooperatives to function in a market economy.
*Democratic Socialism* : Socialist economy alongside a democratic government.
*Communism* : Essentially similar to socialism, although there are no social classes and there is no state.
*Social Democracy* : Capitalism with a strong emphasis on regulations and a strong social safety net to promote the well-being of its citizens. Social democrats still believe in capitalism, where the means of production are owned by a few private individuals at the top, but want to enact regulations and intervention to promote social well-being. Social democrats are not the same thing as Democrats (US party). Social democrats are people with a social democratic ideology. Democrats are people who associate with the Democratic party, of whom many are neoliberals.
Bernie Sanders, at least according to the policies he pushes for, can more accurately be deemed a social democrat rather than a socialist or democratic socialist. However, we cannot know if in his own mind he holds actual socialist ideals but holds back on espousing them publicly.

Почему что они подменяются понятия и неправильно использую термины. Такие проблемы присутствуют во многие партиях многих стран. История социал-демократии очень обширна, меньшевики написали очень много трудов по этому поводу.
Many people try to compare the US to Scandinavian countries, while failing to see some of the big differences. Culture is a big one. Lifestyle is another. How's the homeless problem in those countries? How many people are unemployed due to lack of wanting work? How many are happy to sit and collect unemployment, disability, or other forms of welfare that they don't actually need? How many are happy flipping burgers for a living as adults? How many are taught not to live beyond their means? By and large, when people from Scandinavian countries move to the US, they are very successful. There's good reason for this.
Socialism in the US rebranded itself in this way after fall of USSR. The idea was to get socialism in through the back door of democracy. This succeeded, as even I might have called myself a democratic socialist, thinking this means “as much socialism as you want,” until I realized it was somewhat a “communist plot.” I actually believe in as much, but only as much, socialism as we vote for. I am profoundly distrustful of communism and radical processes which have created more suffering and death than the world has ever known.

Yeah you’d think they could hire someone who knows what socialism is....or it’s the msm intention to keep peoples view of socialism vague??
Thats because they are scared of the word, they dont understand the true meaning.
"We the people..."
Socialism is incredibly vague in general there’s multiple ways of viewing it while still technically still fitting the spot for its definition. All that really matters in the system in which it’s implemented and who is implementing it. And how it is implemented. You can implement it successfully but governments can also ruin it. In the same way our current economic system is already corrupted. Capitalism is better than feudalism but it has a lot of crippling flaws in the same way communism does. Socialism is a huge wide middle ground. Not a set standard. And it’s important to note that non of these are inherently totalitarian nor free. How we decide regulate them is what matters. Capitalism without regulation only leads to business owners owning everything and companies controlling the country. If the government is given too much power over the people and the wrong people are in power at the time with the unique system at the time (one could argue human nature decides that) then you’ll have a complete empire. With a ladder of power dictating peoples lives.

Why not?
because in theory, it is possible for communism to not be authoritarian, though historically it always has been and is difficult to not be authoritarian in practice. additionally socialism is not always un-democratic.

Denmark and Sweden are not Socialist contries. And free College degrees in our contries does not mean for all. You have to qualify with high school grades.
Actually you are democratic socialist. As is my home country the UK where we have the NHS. No sane person wants the mess that is the American medical system. In my view neo-liberal capitalism is reaching an end point where in the US and even European countries the idea that greed is good, that company's only obligations are to stock holders - the same model that existed in the 1800s - has resulted with the very few having all of the wealth. In the US 3 men have more wealth than the bottom 50% of the country. That is a sign of a failed system.
Brian - any sane American would take that in a heartbeat here in the US. No one's saying you should get a college degree for failing. Of course you should have to show progression through the education system itself before you get to college.

@@noleftturnz I disagree. It is because the theory of socialism sounds wonderful and touchy feely, but discounts major aspects that rip up those theories. Notice how many leaders ignore or change the subject when asked about middle class tax hikes? They also never talk about how much government intrusion into your life is going to be, but in order to force companies to comply with their policies they have to either coerce, threaten, or knock the front door down and physically force you.
They also throw short tidbits (Gun Conrol, Censorship, Welfare programs, etc) but don't tell people everything... To really understand their intent, the people must connect the dots of all talking points to actually see the true picture. Socialism is a much more realistic goal: Socialism is defined by Karl Marx as a System where the means of production are in the hands of the Workers, represented by the state.
So no private industry but rather only public industry wich is controlled by the workers in their respective fields.
Democratic Socialism is basically just that but with a democratic government.
Social Democracy is basically a capitalist system with a free market economy with some regulations and social benefits such as a minimum wage, some public industry in essential areas like public transport, housing and energy, as well as public health care and unemployment wages.

@@OpiumBride You're conflating Socialism with totalitarianism and perhaps political correctness, and stripping away any nuance. There's nothing about socialism that makes free thinking and dissent "crushed." How people think, is in combination of factors like eduction, values, self-education, genetics, their social environment and other factors that have little to do with who owns the means of production. It doesn't matter who owns Nike, the wage slave factory worker in China assembling shoes got his education independently at a school that taught him critical thinking or it didn't. And, Monotonously toiling away for 60hrs a week may rot your brain regardless of who owns the company.
Better questions: Why don't developed countries, like USA, make it a requirement to learn critical thinking skills if it's not a "socialist" country? Why do most people not know that all developed countries today are mixed economies (has both socialism and capitalism characteristics)? Why are there people who think criticism of economies is something to be afraid of?
Economies are always changing, and we must always adapt. Criticism helps us to adapt. You're not oppressed just because you exchanged words with someone who disagreed with you, you are someone who was challenged. Learn from it. If you want to see an example of good types of socialism look up worker cooperatives like the Modrogon corporation.
Not gonna lie, 96% don't know the real definition, including me
In a nutshell, socialism means that the government controls your rights, wealth, liberties, production, businesses, health care, property, etc.
It's bad because in this setting, the government can take away or limit those rights, and take and redistribute your property and wealth. The wealth can go to many people, an organization, or maybe just one individual. It isn't a fair system.
However, there are many forms of Socialism, but they're all very similar in this nature. Nationalist Socialism (Nazism) is a very notorious form and very well known.
@@sisi7019 That is your biased personal definition of socialism. The true definition of socialism is "a range of economic and social systems characterized by social ownership of the means of production and workers' self-management, as well as the political theories and movements associated with them. Social ownership can be public, collective or cooperative ownership, or citizen ownership of equity."
Note the phrase "a range of economic and social systems". The kind of socialism the Democratic Socialists of America are pushing for is unlike any previous version of socialism. They acknowledge that the state, if given too much power can be just as tyrannous as any capitalist or corporation. That is why they support democratic socialism, which focuses on the decentralization of economic power through the use of democracy.
Many people think that democratic socialism is just state socialism with political democracy. It isn't, true democratic socialists believe in expanding democracy to include economic democracy as well as political democracy. This can be done through the use of democratic planning as well as collectively owned consumer industries that trade within a market. Here's a quote from the DSA:
"Social ownership could take many forms, such as worker-owned cooperatives or publicly owned enterprises managed by workers and consumer representatives. Democratic socialists favor as much decentralization as possible. While the large concentrations of capital in industries such as energy and steel may necessitate some form of state ownership, many consumer-goods industries might be best run as cooperatives. Democratic socialists have long rejected the belief that the whole economy should be centrally planned. While we believe that democratic planning can shape major social investments like mass transit, housing, and energy, market mechanisms are needed to determine the demand for many consumer goods."
In the short term the DSA and other democratic socialists like Bernie Sanders are focusing on achieving social democracy. Which involves capitalism with some social institutions that guarantee certain basic necessities. It also focuses on reducing the power of corporations through strong unions and sensible regulations. Here's another quote from the DSA:
"In the short term we can't eliminate private corporations, but we can bring them under greater democratic control. The government could use regulations and tax incentives to encourage companies to act in the public interest and outlaw destructive activities such as exporting jobs to low-wage countries and polluting our environment. Public pressure can also have a critical role to play in the struggle to hold corporations accountable. Most of all, socialists look to unions to make private business more accountable."

erwin I, no they are not. I question you actual practical familiarity with this subject. We got democratic socialists and social democrats in Norway. They were in a coalition government from 2005 to 2013. The difference was not huge. That is why they could be in government together. They had a lot of overlapping policies. Our finance minster was a democratic socialist in that period. Before 1985, the social democrats themselves labeled themselves democratic socialists. So this distinction between social democrats and democratic socialists is a fairly modern development.
The policies promoted by Bernie Sanders and AOC are all solidly social democratic policies. But keep in mind a lot of those policies in at least Norway got passed at a time when social democrats also called themselves democratic socialists. The differences are a lot more fluid than I think you are willing to admit. Keep in mind the US has a very different political history from Nordic countries. To my knowledge there is no social democratic party in the US to speak of, so democratic socialism has more prominence.
You can just look to France with a different political history. Their socialist party, is essentially a social democratic party. Don't get too hung up on labels. Look at the policies!

In some ways it doesn't really matter what Danes think, because Americans have made up their own version of what socialism means.
I am a Norwegian and I have struggled for years to wrap my head around what Americans mean by socialism, because it certainly has nothing to do with actual socialism as advocated by actual socialists.
My conclusions is that in America socialism simply means high taxes and extensive welfare services. Big government equals socialism in America. So by that token, Denmark is most definitely socialist.

This program seemed like it was striving for balance until it asked the question: "How are you going to pay for it?" This is dishonest and deceptive. The signature issue. of Progressives (Social Democrats) is Medicare for All. Corporations and corporate media love to paint this as a radical idea, when, in fact, it's our current dysfunctional con game of "health insurance" that is radical. Radically wrong. The U.S. is the only major country cursed with this massively corrupt contraption. Every other major country has universal health care. Why? Because it costs less, covers everyone and has better health outcomes. Every major analysis of Medicare for All, even that of the conservative Koch brothers, found it SAVES two trillion dollars over 10 years. --- As Bernie Sanders has often explained, you tax everyone to pay for it, but everyone SAVES money because they're spending less than they would if they were still paying insurance premiums, deductibles, co-pays, uncovered expenses, etc. - Nobody goes bankrupt because of high medical bills in other countries. In the U.S., astronomical medical bills are the NUMBER ONE cause of bankruptcy. The conservative think tank mouthpiece supposedly debunking this says it couldn't work because Bernie's proposal is "better than other countries have." -- So what? - In the process of attaining it, the necessary adjustments would be made so it would still be at least, 90 percent intact. As every other major country has shown, this is the only efficient way to do health care. This is completely dishonest. - We MUST have universal health care at least as good as the average other country in the world. - Anything less is corruption, exploitation and unnecessary massive suffering! - Shame on CNBC!
Somehow the question of how to pay for it always gets raised in the context of universal healthcare or social services, never in the context of endless war.

Narcissism is also a driving factor behind Socialism. Just like far right movements like fascism, there's a superiority complex followed by actions geared towards satisfaction, either personal or ideological.
For example, with philanthropy and social services, narcissists will often advocate for policies and practices geared towards yielding more immediate and visible results. Their lack of empathy is demonstrated through their complete indifference to quality, thus they only measure impact on the basis of quantity. This satisfies their egotistical desires for a sense of moral superiority by creating an impression that they're "helping everyone".
Unfortunately, such practices repeatedly result in services of substandard and often inhumane quality

Socialism for the rich is not good, do you even know what you’re talking about, and it’s also not horrible for the “regular” people. The definitions in this video are horrible. Also look at Denmark THE HAPPIEST COUNTRY IN THE WORD and it’s socialist, it’s the opposite of horrible.
I think 3 years later we can say that the DSA policies are a disaster. Time to back up
The real reason why is because nobody has ever experienced real capitalism. The united states hasn't had capitalism since 1930.

As a socialist, socialism doesn't take away freedom. It gives more freedom and control to the people, socialism is meant for people and for a better humanity. Socialism is about maximizing freedom to the people and imagien that a corporation is run like a democracy where every single worker has a saying in the power to call out and all are able to make changes imagine that. However democratic socialism is not the solution socialism is.
Socialism is not necessarily "power to the people", but it can be. It is possible for socialist governments to lean toward authoritarianism. Democratic socialism shares many beliefs with socialism but is instead "power to the people", by definition. I would describe democratic socialism as halfway between a social democracy and plain socialism.
Capitalism (example: USA)
Social Democracy (halfway between capitalism and democratic socialism, example: Scandinavia)
Democratic Socialism (similar to socialism with some differences, also democratic by definition, power to the people)
Socialism (some socialists advocate for democracy, but socialism is not democratic by definition, example: Cuba)
Communism (historically authoritarian, difficult not to be authoritarian in practice)
I'm happy to see that Americans are finally starting to wake up from the American Dream they have been fed for decades and are finally starting to understand that Socialism is for their own good.
The irony of course is that those who pushed "supply side" on the masses over the years = are the very ones responsible for its eventual demise. Human nature is always a potential problem as it lends to "greed" which foments abuses within the system while those abuses invariably in time stimulate calls for course correction. Thus as you alluded to the excesses of unfettered "supply side economics" whose natural course of evolution results in monopolies and exploitation of workforces now serves as impetus for abandonment of the same. 🤨
p.s. - there are no true "isms" out there by the way. What is more likely is that just as you see in say Europe what eventually happens is a "blended system" which incorporates facets of socialist policies with some of the benefits of capitalism = hence "democratic socialism" as the video alludes. Basic needs to be better addressed by the government while the marketplace is allowed to operate - within limits created via regulations to limit the aforementioned excesses and the creation of monopolies. The answer as always is usually = somewhere in the middle.

That's not even close to what the definition of socialism and communism actually are
Precisely. Communism is a system which moneyless and stateless (I.e. no government). How can communism be government control if it is the antithesis of government control?
@@greevar That's American education and western propaganda gets ya
@@ChosenSquirrel That is not communism. It is a stateless and moneyless society. "Businesses" are operated as democratic cooperatives formed by the community, for the community. If voluntarily collaborating with your neighbors to build a school or a hospital (or whatever) because your community needs one is slavery, then I question your understanding of the word "slavery". The driving force behind production in communism is not human coercion; it's driven by the demand of human needs, which are about as coercive as your need to breath.

Under neoliberal capitalism, all human worth, and free speech as well, is reduced to financial terms.
As such actual humans, along with the earth itself, are pretty disposable.
So I find it funny that you emphasize the movement towards socialism as wanting to reduce people to interchangeable cogs.
I think capitalism does that very well for the vast majority of people.
Some of us actually advocate for worker control of their own workplaces, workplace democracy; or at least representation within corporations.
...So that would be _expansion_ of democracy, would it not?
@@greevar I always thought communism was authoritarian government by definition. It seems this may not be true, but then was the Soviet Union really communist? It had a very authoritarian government.
I work for Amazon, and it ain't the american dream, that's for damn sure
I don't doubt it.
So we're faced with Godless capitalism or Godless socialism/ communism, etc. I'll take Godless capitalism first, but the problem is our rejection of God. We honor Him with our lips, but our hearts are far from Him. That's why we have Hillary Clinton not only advocating for killing the unborn, but killing them up till birth (amongst other things) while publicly invoking God in speech, and Donald Trump declaring that he and God "were good" and that he doesn't need to ask for forgiveness, all the while fornicating, committing adultery, lying, etc., etc. The average American had no clue who God is, they have no relationship with Him. They believe in God and have vague notions about Him, either favorable or unfavorable, that are completely wrong. They believe in a God of their own making, thinking they're a good enough person and will go to heaven, effectively on their own merit, or because they don't understand that God is just and righteous, and they think that God will just overlook their rebellion and offense against Him. But they're wrong and lost, they have no relationship with God and do not obey, or trust Him. Or nation is already under God's judgement in that He's given us overt to our bankrupt desires to experience the dreadful consequences.
So our days are numbered, we are and will reap what we're sow. Socialism, communism, etc. will end up making it more miserable. Just imagine how pleasant it will be for corrupt elitists to control your life under their law and punishment. After all, they'll know what's best and it'll all be "for the good of the people". There will be nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Either way, our country will die from the moral rot and decay that we're infested with.
