A lot of people just copy and art reference, without thinking of things like tension, material, light source, etc...
Thanks for bringing these to everyone's attention!

Best video on folds I've seen here. It explains step by step the stages and their patterns and it doesn't just tell you their names and then just draws them

When I was first learning how to shade, we did all these folds in fabric, different fabrics and light sources. It was hard at first, but now it's like I don't even think about it. Putting the terminology to what I'm already doing is really helpful.

Thanks for the lessons. You broke down some challenges I've been struggling with for years.....Folds in fabric and skin are one of, if not the most important thing artist should learn. If you look at the Classic work from Renaissance forward, you'll see folds a million times. They make up such a large part of that art. I can't help but spend so much time looking and studdling them whenever I see such works. Recognizing them (on fabric or skin) and knowing how they "work" is a must for all artist.

@@IngeniousOutdoors I've been drawing for decades and I still mess up. It's all part of the learning process. When we mess up, THAT is the exact moment we get better because our brain notices the mistake and subconsciously makes us aware of it the next time.

The force of gravity acts just downwards, it doesn't exert a lateral or compressive force. The reason the folds appear is a combination of the tension between where the cloth hangs and the gravity (just pulls it down), the material and the weave of the fabric (affects drape and elasticity), the friction at contact points (the friction between the curtain rod and the fabric maintains the gathered state of the curtain) and so on.

Hi, i recently discovered this channel and find it really inspiring. Your art style is pretty much the style i'm striving for, and one of the best here on youtube. At least for my personal taste. I'm just a hobbyist and don't have that much time to invest in drawing, but it's all about the journey :)
One of the things I'm always struggeling with, is how to avoid symmetry and patterns. In this video you are doing a lot of "random" lines for the foldings. When I'm trying something like this it always seems a bit too organized. It doesn't matter if I'm trying to draw tree branches, mountain lines, creature textures,... they always tend to look too "perfect". So I really would appreciate some tipps or an episode about how to avoid this or how to practice this "natural chaoticness".

FYI, the best art book I've seen is Sketching MANGA Style Vol 1: Sketching as Composition Planning.
It has a girl with a frog hood on the cover... in a can.
I know it makes no sense, but the book shows pretty good sketches.. and then how to make them better with a side by side comparison.

One of my high school teachers taught me that the 'hard to do' things are - because, like you did within the first 30 seconds - told that it's hard. It's in the wording. Call it 'suggestion' or 'hypnosis', it goes into our brain that it's hard or impossible, and we do shit jobs of it without our efforts even having a chance to try.
