Let's eliminate the fear and frustration we as artists have with drawing folds in fabric and drapery. In this video, I give a beginner-friendly lesson on how to sketch folds both in clothing and in drapery. It can be rewarding and fun once these very simple methods are applied!
Drawing is a skill that most people wish they could do but they immediately put themselves in the category of "Oh, I could never do that." I want to take this time and welcome you to my channel: Draw Sessions.
I've been drawing all my life and have had the privilege of working both for AAA game studios and also movies. I have taught foundation drawing at the University of Cincinnati and it's time now to give back. I understand the frustrations of learning art in general but specifically, drawing. My channel is dedicated in helping absolute beginners, intermediate artists, and industry veterans - all wanting to improve their drawing skills. Please like, subscribe, hit the notification bell and comment below if you're finding this channel helpful in your journey of becoming an artist.

A lot of people just copy and art reference, without thinking of things like tension, material, light source, etc...
Thanks for bringing these to everyone's attention!

When I was first learning how to shade, we did all these folds in fabric, different fabrics and light sources. It was hard at first, but now it's like I don't even think about it. Putting the terminology to what I'm already doing is really helpful.

Hi, i recently discovered this channel and find it really inspiring. Your art style is pretty much the style i'm striving for, and one of the best here on youtube. At least for my personal taste. I'm just a hobbyist and don't have that much time to invest in drawing, but it's all about the journey :)
One of the things I'm always struggeling with, is how to avoid symmetry and patterns. In this video you are doing a lot of "random" lines for the foldings. When I'm trying something like this it always seems a bit too organized. It doesn't matter if I'm trying to draw tree branches, mountain lines, creature textures,... they always tend to look too "perfect". So I really would appreciate some tipps or an episode about how to avoid this or how to practice this "natural chaoticness".

FYI, the best art book I've seen is Sketching MANGA Style Vol 1: Sketching as Composition Planning.
It has a girl with a frog hood on the cover... in a can.
I know it makes no sense, but the book shows pretty good sketches.. and then how to make them better with a side by side comparison.

Can you make a video about how to draw with reference? since you already made a video about how to draw without reference. I'm wondering if it's a good content if you make a video about how to draw with reference so that we can see the techniques to use especially how do you draw the shadows and other techniques?

The fact he missed a line going up for one of the bottom of the drop folds drove me crazy. He kept saying "account for all of them" and darkening the curvy part and drawing right past it 😂😂

@@IngeniousOutdoors I've been drawing for decades and I still mess up. It's all part of the learning process. When we mess up, THAT is the exact moment we get better because our brain notices the mistake and subconsciously makes us aware of it the next time.
