I have watched this a number of times. For some reason, for me, the idea of engaging the back muscles doesn't seem to translate to me, and it may go back to my days as a gymnast. Flexing the back muscles makes me think of arching my back, but tightening up my abs, as in 'suck in your gut like you are trying to put your belly button on your spine' seems to bring my feet up, where if I am not paying attention to that and have relaxed abs, then my hips do tend to sink. I wasn't really aware of having bad posture while swimming back stroke until I saw this video and started playing around with this. It did make a difference both on my swimming laps and my kicking laps. If I try engaging my glutes, that seems to lock up my kick rather than letting the kick flow, if that makes any sense... For sure, you don't want to be flexed at your hips as you swim because that adds to drag...
One other point, and this is with your arm pull. I see a lot of swimmers doing this, and only with back stroke. Some more than others. About half way through your arm pull, your palm and hand start to rotate from straight up vertical to horizontal. At the last little wrist flip/whip at the finish of the stroke, your palm is totally horizontal, and that last bit of energy at the end of the stroke is going straight down to the bottom of the pool, providing no thrust. I always keep my palm vertical till it is against my leg, so at least in theory, I am getting push for the entire stroke. I haven't seen anyone rotate their palm similar to this when doing freestyle. Comments???

That subtle point of an overworked anterior chain! On point.

Yes, exactly. 🙌 An overworked anterior chain is something we all have to overcome. Our lifestyles keep us in this frame work most of the day. Glad you liked the video and enjoy your practice! Best, Coach Mandy

Excellent tutorial: been self-teaching myself with backstroke through tutorial vids like these; I notice I am dragging through the water because I lack core/glute engagement. I wrote some of your tips for the next swim workout. Thanks!

Not moving despite all the leg movement. I was actually stationary so got overtaken by fellow swimmers. Would like to know where to place the hands once they are in water.
