- Today we are exploring the intervalometer, the part of the Aircraft Weapon Release Unit (AWRU) responsible for the release timing of multiple bombs and/or rockets from your aircraft. In the case of bombs, it sets up the impact spacing between weapons. Knowing how to set it can be intimidating, but I think I can help simplify that for you here.
Formula for calculating bomb spacing for a low level, straight and level attack run:
(Attack speed * 6,076.12) / 3,600 = Speed in feet per second
Bomb spacing / FPS speed = interval timing
1 - Pick a run in speed (500 knots and 300 foot spacing for example)
2 - Multiply that by 6,076.12 (500 * 6,076.12 = 3,038,060 Feet per hour
3 - Divide that result by 3,600 to get feet per second (3,038,060 / 3,600 = 843.91 FPS)
4 - Divide the spacing by your FPS speed to get the interval setting (300 / 843.91 = 0.36 seconds)
The interval knob would be set to 0.36 and the aircraft would need to be flown at 500 knots true air speed to ensure the planned spacing. Flying faster than planned with the same time setting would space the weapons further apart, flying slower than planned puts them closer together.
Cool video, love the F4. Worked on the F4 K Sim in the U.K. a long time ago ! Still love the beast. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thx Diesel! Love it
Thanks for the tutorial! 🙂👌👍
You're welcome!
Thank you Diesel Thunder.
My pleasure!
Sweet bombing run! Thanks for the info.
My pleasure! Nap of the earth flying and a pop up attack are even more fun!
@DieselThunderAviation I've lost a few Ai on my 6 to dirt naps flying map of the earth In the F4, that's something I learned theu years of Wing Over Vietnam -PC 😁. With the straight line speed of the F4, not much can catch a clean Phantom! 😜 Works in DCS too, but yeah learning all the bombing techniques in DSC F4 is a chore 😁🇺🇸
Is there a way to lock the slats on the F4? I kinda like it more when the slats are in.
Sure is. Pilot cockpit, left hand side. Think it’s a yellow/black guarded switch that will lock the slats.
All that math made my head hurt😅
It's cool hearing them drop off the racks though.
And that is the easy math! Calculating the spacing for a diving attack is a bit more involved and has a little trigonometry. And yes, very satisfying to get a good bomb run in!
Some of the other tutorials emphasize on setting up the reticle depression based on airspeed and altitude. You didn’t bother too much with it. So if hitting a truck convoy, does the reticle depression matter or we just guesstimate?
Coming in low, straight, and level, I don't get much use out of it. Especially if releasing a whole string of them. I've gotten decent at getting the drop at about the right time in most instances. Definitely is more useful on a diving attack. And I forgot to switch it to A/G as well.
Just tried your method of calculating the spread and ithe results were way better than any of my previous attempts. In DCS mission editor, if you create a tank convoy on road, the default separation between the tanks is just about 100 feet. So using your calculations, I was able to land some snakeeyes pretty close and in some cases right on top of a 10 tank T55 convoy. Thanks a ton 🎉👍🏽
Awesome! Love it when runs like that just work. Way more fun and challenging than just dropping laser guided stuff!
