The first album by a metal band is usually the best, why? No expectations, no fear of not "sounding like what it should" and a new name to be creative under. This is easily in the top 5 metal albums of all time.
Because they have their whole lives to make that first album and try to chase the magic within a span of a year or two based on it's success. It's not just metal, look at Pearl Jam's first album (all Eddie Vedder btw) vs anything they've released since, the same can be said for a great many artists.
"The first album by a metal band is usually the best" - totally can't agree. It's just that we tend to remember outstanding albums and we also tend to fear change, thus there are lots of "Metallica was done after Kill 'Em All" people, while they obviously peaked at "Master of Puppets". Quite contrary to your statement, it's usually the third album that is the best of a given band. Why? Because on the first they record their best tracks, composed over the years (and thus often being uneven and varying in style, just think of Metallica's "Jump in the Fire" and "Metal Militia" - they sound like two different bands); then on the second album the band records the leftovers that they didn't put onto their first album; and only then, when they set out to record their third, they are forced to write completely new material. This is the moment where a band either triumphs or fails. You'd have to be insane to say that Slayer's "Show no Mercy" is better than "Reign in Blood", or that "Iron Maiden" is better than "Number of the Beast", or that "Killing is My Business" is better than "Rust in Peace", or that "Scream Bloody Gore" is better than "Symbolic", or... you catch my drift. Not all of these are third albums, but it shows that the later stuff is usually the best instead of the debut LPs. Can't say how this applies to SFU, because I'm not that familiar with them - it might be, that their first is the best indeed. But it's not the norm. What IS the norm though, is that usually the first album SOUNDS the shittiest, because a band doesn't yet have money to record their stuff properly :p
@ELEKTROSKANSEN Metallica peaked at Justice. That album is fucking killer, besides the lack of bass. That was their peak, and it all went downhill from there.
I love metal vocals where you can't understand a word they're saying, I always appreciate it and I spend a lot of time listening to music like that... But I really like this band because I can understand pretty much every word he says! And he still has that growly, evil sound that I love (although I prefer black metal shrieking vocals but whatever haha) It's nice to enjoy different types of bands with different sounds, different strengths and weaknesses.
In the night hear the howling...when the moon is full...dying in the darkness...bitten by the wolf...legacy of blood...another victim...eternal horror...hell yeah!!!
Acho incrível como a primeira vez que eu ouvi essa música eu não conseguia entender uma palavra que saia da boca do chris mas depois de ver a letra eu entendo tanto quanto um vocal limpo
This is the best six feet under album my first was maximum violence which i thought was really good but its sad we only got one perfect six feet under album warpath was alright and after maximum violence it just wasnt the same.

What about the fear of always thinking everything needs to be ranked and top fived?
