  • In this video I talk about why I personally prefer Summicron lenses over Summilux or Noctilux when taking photos with the Leica M-D (262).
    Link to my video where I explain how to confidently take photos without the need for a back screen. Focussing is a big part of this: • No Rear Screen Needed ...
    All photos in this video were taken on my Leica M-D 262.

    Thank you for this very informative video.
    I am still of the opinion that the Summicron lineup of M lenses is the most interesting regarding size, image quality and price (have not used the APO50mm). I did a "pelgrimage" recently to Wetzlar for calibrating my lenses with my M body and it makes a huge difference with the APO Summicron 90, as with the Noctilux. Although my most used lens is the Summicron 50mm. The Nocti I use mostly in low light conditions.
    I had the opportunity to visit the Leitz park at Wetzlar and customer service managed to calibrate all my lenses in the meanwhile. i contacted the kundendienst with the request for a visit. Everything worked out fine regarding sync of the 2 departments.
    After this visit my keeper rate was higher and i am confident everything is aligned properly.

      I didn't think of having my lenses calibrated to the body. That's an interesting thought. Maybe I should also do that at some point and maybe a good reason to finally go to Wetzlar myself. I haven't been there yet. Thanks for sharing Eric.

    I can understand your preference for the Summicrons based on costs... of course you can use your 'lux in f2...but in really low light you can not open you 'cron into f1.4 or 0.95...
    I have the 'lux 35, 50 and 90 and a Voigtlander 50mm 1.4.... and an old Tri-Elmar 28-35-50 f 3.5... but I use mainly the 50 1.4.
    I understand your point on focusing... I get many out of focus pictures with the Noctilux (wich is intended to be used at max aperture...)
    Anyway, thanks for the time and effort you put into this video.

    Your rationale is very correct. For me, I like to have the 24 mm and 35 mm lenses mounted on my M10-D since those are easy to focus without LV assistance. Only when I was in an easy mood to test myself would I use the Tele-Elmar 1:4/135 mm on it with a Visoflex.

    I have used number of systems in the past Lumix, Fuji, Cannon. I loved the Fuji X100f, but just for full frame and wider lens I got a Lieca Q-p 2 years ago as a quick point and shoot for my travels and got totally hooked on to the idea of Leica. Finally got a Leica M10-D after saving and looking for a long time. I am glad I made the move. I can totally relate to everything you say in this video. It just makes sense to get a Summicron vs a Summilux for this kind of setup. I tried both 35mm Lux and Cron, but ended up keeping the Cron and a Voigtlander 28mm f2 ultron. Also I feel the f2 lens are very well balanced in terms of weight and dimensions. I am also watching some of your other videos and love the insights. Keep making such awesome, quality and detailed videos. Thanks!

    I have the f 2.8 28mm and 90mm and the f 2.0 50 mm. They are very sharp and colorful. I think that even the f 2.5 50mm would be an excellent choice. I agree that it seems that it is extremely difficult to focus the faster lenses without magnification and taking a lot of extra time.

    Hi Marcus, thanks and congratulations for your channel: very valuable for shooting practice. I would dig into Leica world with either a M240 or M262, and I have a question about focus shift. I would like to be able to use a 35 mm at any aperture including medium ones. From your prospective, which lens would be suitable? Is a Summicron free from focus shift, or is it something to care about? Is there any recommended variant? (old ones or asph...)

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  4 года назад

      Thanks for watching and your kind words! I heard about focus shift issues with Summilux and I did a quick google search (bit.ly/33RjNIz). I personally don't know how big the issue is with Summicron (according to the link) ZERO. Generally I am very happy with the Summicron ASPH and can highly recommend it. I would not buy a nin ASPH version tbh. Also I always set aperture before I focus. Never change aperture without refocusing.

    Great channel. This 50mm Cron APO seems so good to use! Did you consider the M10-D, and if yes or no, why? I have a chrome M240 and the MD was my dream camera when it was unvieled , but and now it's the M10-D... Aaah Leica..

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Aws. I did consider the M10-D. There is only one thing I don't like about it, and that is the fact that they moved the ISO dial away from the back. Basically kept it where the M10 has it. I guess for cost reasons. It's a pitty considering the price for the M10-D. They could've made it special. But overall the M10-D is a great camera. The step up from my M-D 262 was too small for me thus far to upgrade. I am super happy with it.

    • @Wizaris84
      @Wizaris84 4 года назад +1

      @@TheMPhotography I agree about the iso dial. What i love the most on the M10 series is their large viewfinder. But you right, the MD is already great and more core than the M10-D (no evf, no wifi). Plus the "step" designed on the your M-D remind me the beautiful design of the M9 series.

      Thanks for the reply. I’ve one more question if you don’t mind - I’ve been thinking of getting the m-d. Been considering it against the M10. Although I love the ‘analog’ feel, I’m also wondering if the m10’s images (especially the color rendering and the fact that it’s newer in terms of make and sensor) are better and hence a better buy. What would be your opinion on this? Thanks.

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  5 лет назад

      The M10 has most definitely a better sensor. Especially noticeable if you do low light photography. The ISO performance of the M10 is incredible. For pure image quality reasons I would recommend buying the M10 over the M-D or if money is of no concern the M10-D.

    I, too, think that the Leica Summicron line hits the “sweet spot” between portability, price and picture quality. But I have to admit that from time to time it’s pretty cool to have a ‘Lux with you, especially if one is shooting in the evening. The additional shallow depth of field at f1.4 is a second bonus. I own the 35mm and the 50mm Summilux and I really like both. Especially the 50mm is not much bigger than a ‘Cron. In the end it’s a tough decision with pros and cons on both sides. But I absolutely agree that the Noctilux line is a little bit too big and heavy for the M-series. I would like to use the Noctis on a Leica SL, but not on the M.

    • @TheMPhotography
      @TheMPhotography  4 года назад +1

      Yeah. The Lux are nice and the additional stop is super good at night. The Nocti lineup should be amazing on the SL or the Lumix S1R. The 75 Nocti without an EVF is pretty much useless, especially on a M :(

    This is a very bizzare statement in my eye.
    1) You are chosing lenses for a camera? I would rather go the other way around and chose the camera that allows me to use the lense I want and not be limited by the options the camera offers. The lense makes the picture, besides yourself.
    2) As you mention in the video the focus gets more critical when getting closer to a subject, relative to the focal length, but the opposite ist true also. There is no problem at all to focus at wide open appretures if your subject is further away and your DOF increases in absolute.
    3) Your selection of chosing only summicrons regardless of focal length negates your own arguments
    4) Summicrons and summiluxes have got different characteristics and will create a different look even when shot with the same apreture, something you seem not to have realised or treat as being of lower order.
    It all does not sound very well though out in my eyes but it is your choice obviously -even though technically and also from an artistic point of view it does not make any sense at all to me.
