Good job, I love her music too. People who came from large families that know all the beauty, good, tragedy and heartbreak of those situations can write from the heart and emphathize with soul stirring music like this. I am the second of seven kids. Our honorable military man father has passed on almost five years ago over 88.5 years of age. I have three brothers in another State, that look in on my 90 years old mother and disabled sister regularly. There is nothing they would not do for my mother to make sure that she is taken care of. That in the end is the beauty of a large family. My Mom may be ailing now, but we all remember the spectacular force of nature she was in her time to take care of us, and how she still leans on the Lord Jesus.
There's a sweetness about Iris and when she sings her voice travels right to your heart! She is a special lady who is loved across the world. Keep writing your well crafted songs Iris that are distinctly your own style, and will all keep listening to them! Good luck and press on!
I vividly remember going to the Troubadour club in Hollywood and seeing Iris in person around this time when she released her first album on Warner Brothers Records. I was totally blown away!!! Fortunately, I have been able to see her quite a few times through the years in LA, Santa Barbara, Solana Beach, CA, and in Wisconsin and Minnesota. All wonderful performances and I treasure the memories of those delightful evenings. Thank you for posting this video! And thank you to John and Deanne Davis, the hosts of the former radio show called Heartfelt Music on radio station KPFK in Los Angeles, for first introducing me to Iris and for announcing the concert at the Troubadour! Rest in Peace, John. Love you Iris! You are the BEST! 💙💜💙
Saw Iris live last night, she hasn't lost of thing. She said she thought of retiring, but I cannot imagine why. Her voice has help up so beautifully all of these years, and all of her songs are the kind which get richer as time passes. They are truly timeless poems and her voice is like the Blossom Dearie of Americana.
Iris is just unique, so lucky to have seen here in ireland many times during the 90's into the 00's. Thanks so much for posting this clip. She was always so modest almost shy on stage, but she was beautiful!
I love Iris DeMent & took my youngest son of 26 to Knuckleheads Saloon in KC on 3/23/2023 to see her perform live, on tour now to promote her new album, 'Working on the World'. This show was before a sold out crowd of adoring fans & accompanied by a stand up base & a singer guitarist, who is touring with her. The majority of the crowd were gray haired, myself included, many walking with canes & walkers. Some young families with teenage children also. All listened with rapt attention. There is something special about her voice & songs. I also saw her in Lawrence, Kansas, at a solo show back in 2017 or 2018 at the Lawrence Art Center. Iris is beautiful, funny & so talented. I really enjoyed seeing this taped show this morning! Thanks for sharing it with us! Her spirit & hope ever still, & that unique voice, rings true & bright! 🌟 ❤️🔥
I just saw a recent interview with Iris - almost 30 years later. She is so unpretentious, and so thoughtful. I avoid having 'heroes', but if anyone qualifies... she's the real deal.
You're right, Iris is awesome. I caught her opening for John Prine at the Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln Nebraska back in 2003. I didn't know of her before that and I think that was the first time that I ever heard "In spite of ourselves" when she came out to accompany John. It was a great night.
I started to listen to this.. love Iris DeMent but I never heard this before.. I could only listen for a few seconds.. I've been bedridden for 3 years and kind of depressed. Just the sound of her voice brought tears to my eyes.. emotional and depressing songs are not good for me right now..
The reason you couldn't find anyone in Paragould, Arkansas that knew of her is because she didn't grow up there! She actually grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her family moved there when she was only 3 years old. So, she probably doesn't even know much about Paragould, Arkansas herself, other than she probably still has distant family relatives there that she may or may not even know. (cousins and such.)
Her songs are so real “ they hit my Heart , she always brings tears to my eyes. She is just a Beautiful person. Luv her. !

Thank you for posting this gem!
She deserves more attention
I'm catching up on Iris's collections of incredibly beautiful and touching songs. Such a great talent with a heart of gold.
She's so special. Love her songwriting and voice.
Incredible live performance of an amazing song , what a voice…a once in a lifetime gift to us all.
This woman is a great poet as great as Bob Dylan.

Her voice is primal.

@@ClevelandLiveMusic yeah I got onto Iris because of John prine.. loved her doing our town..
Great stuff. Do you have any more Iris?
Iris Dement describing her mother reminds me of Zig Zeigler describing his mom.
Like Dolly P. , her voice is unique.
