The dissolution of the clock-ticking sound turned my brain inside-out when I first heard it. It's hard to explain to someone who is used to all the granular and FFT-based effects available to modern composers, how utterly mind-bending it was for the 80s.
I had a class with Barry Truax, and even I have trouble understanding what he was up to, haha. But basically, you run sounds through a specific program, and you get these sounds as your output.
Barry was pretty open with all of his techniques, actually. Since the aim of the course was to create sonic works similar to this one, he wanted to make sure we had as much in our toolkit as possible to make stuff. He basically showed us everything he knows, and would demonstrate these techniques with examples from his own work. It was an amazing class to be in.
This video was created with Sonic Visualizer, vokoscreen and OpenShot on an openSUSE 13.2 Linux System. But actually I am using Debian 8 as operating system.

Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) linked to this in a soundcloud comment. Didn't expect musique concrète (or whatchamacallit), but not surprised!
One of my favorites electroacoustic pieces!
There's a very fine analysis of this excellent work in Inside Computer Music (ed Clarke, Dufeu, Manning; Oxford Press, 2020).
Dude's a legend. Thanks for keeping this music around and being a champion of such greatness.
