Great hack. I immediately ordered a resistor kit from Amazon for $10 after seeing your video. It arrived about 10 minutes ago. What I did was broke apart the old sensor and wiped the black stuff off the inside of the sensor and checked to make sure I had an open line between the two spade contacts. Then I wrapped a wire from the 22K ohm resistor around each of the two spade contacts, plugged the "hacked" sensor back in, reset the controller, and boom..... we have hot water. Thanks so much!!

I like your idea. I don’t have a high efficiency Rheem, but I absolutely would do the same modification. I see way too many of those tanks with that failure. I’ve lived. 65 years with a conventional standing pilot water heater without any problems. I will continue the same path.

I used a 22k resistor and it worked for me too! It worked once I did the knob twist reset. If it still blinks 7 times, twist the knob from lowest to highest repeatedly and it fires right up! Best video, thank you so much!

Tim, Thank you so VERY MUCH for this clear & detailed explanation & Fix for the very identical Rheem hot water heater with gas controller. I had been searching for two weeks for a solution and even hired a plumber/HVAC person in desperation to get hot water back into my house. Long story short, I could not find a repair video anywhere close to yours. I had already purchased a new Controller & a new FVS kit, but no where could I find the restart sequence & the temperature control high to low to high number of repetitions (6 times was the correct number). Your video immediately brought my water heater back to life!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

      (see'ns how I'm a woman& all..haha)
I can use pencil graphite, like shown in the video, to possibly get my hot water going again? ?
Mine was tripped off by a bug bomb that
I set off upstairs.....nowhere near the water heater in the basement.

Thank you so very, very much for posting this vid! l have had to replace that sensor 3 times in 16 months. Apparently, it thinks humidity is flammable as well. My wife has cancer and the chemo has made her hyper sensative to cold, and l was able to apply your fix the day after it went out instead of waiting a week for the plumber to show. The old h2o heater ran 27 years without a single problem before it died, this piece of junk has gone through 3 sensors and one controller in under 2 years. Atleast this time the repair was $1.85. Thank you again!!

Thanks for the video Tim, really made the difference for me and many others. I believe I have found my particular problem that was setting off the sensor, and it was none of the listed causes on the kit, nothing like that because my water heater isn't in a garage like most are, it's on my second floor with absolutely no proximity to anything prone to emitting vapors and the cabinet it is in is not even painted or coated inside in any way. I didn't read through all the comments to see if anyone else mentioned this factor so here goes : High humidity and heat is the most likely cause in my case. I live in Southern California, at the beach, and most of the year the weather is classic SoCal perfect weather, even being so close to the ocean humidity is low, this is all reclaimed desert after all. Every couple of years a tropical storm comes up from the Mexico and brings extremely muggy conditions for about a week. I called Rheem and this possibility came up in my conversation and the Tech at Rheem confirmed that yes, humidity and heat out of the ordinary will set off the sensor. Sorry for the ramble, Best Wishes Always.

Hmmm, interesting I live in dry Las Vegas, my water heater was installed when it was cold outside, so my conditions were different from yours, so that adds to the mystery of what sets-off the sensor. I believe it's just a faulty/poorly designed component.

Worked perfectly! We live in a 120 year-old house with a fieldstone foundation that weeps water when it rains. The sensor reads the extra humidity as a flammable vapor. In reality, water vapor is (checks reference material) the precise opposite of flammable. So that was getting annoying. Anyway, thanks.

I had a 15K Ohm resistor on hand, so thank you so much for this hack. I got a new A.O. Smith water heater two days ago and while looking at how to run the condensation line from the blower housing I spotted a huge spider at the bottom and sprayed him. That killed my FV sensor, so I found this video which got me going again while I waited on Amazon to deliver a new Rheem sensor for $23. If the new one goes out anytime soon, the resistor goes back in for good.

thanks for your hack. got me out of a jam, I did Dremel off the plastic over the electrode area of the sensor, hooked it to a meter and it read completely open. got a pencil and stroked it about 3 or four times and the ohmic value was 35k. i know it had to be between 5 and 70 k to work so I tried it and it didn't work until I removed power and turned off the switch and returned power turned it on and used a screwdriver to move the knob about 7 times back and forth and the blue light status light changed from the code 7 to the normal pulsating blue code. this is today Christmas eve 2021 and pretty much everything shut down until after Christmas. this was a prayer answered in which I ask God for wisdom on how to at least fix it temporarily. will be ordering a couple more sensors as I don't want to permanently override the sensor. I looked all over the place for a 22k resistor but I threw away my electronic parts years back as I haven't been making electronic projects anymore. I use to go to radio shack several times a week and now they're gone and just recently, frys electronics just closed down. again thanks for the quick fix.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you.........
I called a plumber and he threatened with charging me over a hundred dollars for "bypassing the problem". I didn't know how easy it was to fix until I saw your video.
As soon as you described how the sensor worked, and the resistor, I stopped the video, called my local electronic part store, they had it in stock for $1.49 for 5 pieces., but they were closing in 20 mins. I stopped the video, went out and got the little package of 5 resistors (did I mentioned "$1.49 for FIVE resistors?). went back, pulled the little plastic holder with the sensor inside, pulled the terminals out, put the legs of the resistor through each of the holes in the sensor' connector terminals, pushed the wire terminals back in place (had to force them in a bit as the terminals had to bend tight the resistor's legs. Put the whole assembly back into place, reset the thermostat valve by twisting the heat knob back and forward repeatedly several times until the light went back to "normal operation". I was reading the instructions on how to re-lit the heater when voila!!! I heard a noise, and the bam! the burner came back to life by itself and started burning away. I looked through the window, and the pilot was happily working, everything else looked working normal, LED etc, and oh, did I mention that I had spent $1.49 so far??? THAT WAS IT!!!!.
Now I will take my time contacting Rheem and request the new sensor (under warranty), which they said will take 2-5 days. No problem, I'll be having hot showers all the way until the part arrives. Did I say "Thank you" enough?? probably not, so thank you, thank you..............

Well here's a big eureka I'd like to share re: our Rheem Performance Platinum Hot Water Heater's vapor sensor with a Honeywell controller. You need to do more than just turn the unit on and off to reset the sensor, as the manual implies. You need to unplug the unit. Wait 10 seconds. Plug it back in. Wait 5 more seconds. Then take the red temperature knob and rotate it counter-clockwise to low, then all the way clockwise to high, 6 X, all within 30 seconds. You'll hear a 'click' sound and the sensor is truly reset. Set the red dial to your normal temperature, and you'll see the blue light is no longer flashing the dreaded 7 flashes.
I learned this pearl of wisdom in the following link:
    www.google.com/search?q=rheem+flammable+vapor+sensor&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS878US878&oq=rheem+flammable+vapor+sensor&aqs=chrome..69i57j0l7.6205j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#kpvalbx=_UkqSXuq3GpLStQayp6TgDg4
I wonder how many people replaced this sensor, because they didn't do that 6 rotation reset trick? What a cruel thing not to put in the manual.

Saying it's against the law and proving a point are two different concepts Karen, I mean Energy E

@@snowdonna Have you not thought that maybe the problem isn’t “storing gas next to your water heater” as you say... but rather, that your GAS fired water heater could have/develop a GAS leak resulting in an explosion if the water heater wasn’t to turn itself off??? What kind of liability will be on your shoulders if you or someone else who watches this video, takes your advice, does this hack and then later sells their house to an unsuspecting buyer, who in turn has a gas leak causing a fire or explosion??

@@courtroom19 Like I did just put the sensor back on if you're scared, or sell the house. :)

You must be fun at parties. This is just another stupid safety feature for liability reasons because some idiot stored a gas can next to his heater. Water heaters have not had these for decades and no issues!!!

SPEAK UP! Your video may have been more helpful if it could be heard clearly!

Randy get a new phone or turn up the volume because it was 100% clear you can hear him as if he were standing next to me 🌬👂

Seriously. You instruct people to By-pass a Safety Feature that manufacture is required by law to incorporate into system. What will you do or say when a water heater causes a fire and the owner mentions your video and instructions? I hope you do not hold a valid gas license or that you work in such a field.
