True, watercolor is always underestimated. I have painted with many mediums, pastells, oil, acryl, chalk, ink, colored pencils etc....but watercolor is the most difficult to achieve something specific. If it is just loose botanicals or landscapes, it is not so difficult to handle, because there is more room for happy little accidents....but watercolor portraits are insanely difficult, becuase one error and the painting is lost. All other mediums can be fixed to some, oil most of all. But watercolor can barely be fixed. It can be done to some extent, but not much. I hate painting with watercolors :D
It's kinda sad that one has to win. These 3 are all masters. All have an extreme great skill set and raw talent. All 3 are a 10 out of 10. Their stiles are so inspiring, it's almost impossible to compare them.
I can’t choose between this 3 artist , they all the best artists in the world , different styles , I Love them all , can’t choose , the right decision , they all deserve to win
I could watch all day! It so fascinating to see the portraits emerge, such diverse styles, and all beautiful. And I love the judges and the presenters, so sensitive with their comments. A brilliant series👏👏
I think it's hilarious when people try and tell artists that their technique is wrong. If you interpret the world in a particular way, and that's how you use the materials, you are 100% correct. You can find something unattractive, but to say that the art was incorrectly created? That's rubbish.
I would like to have the explaination, because I thought it was the worst of the paintings of him. Too much contrast, not enough likeness, the forehead...omg. He looked dirty, like a coal mine worker. The winners portrai of Sir Ian was very good, because he managed to catch the mischievousness. The watercolor was done brilliantly...it is insanley difficult to do portraits in watercolor. I understand if that is not to everyones taste. But imho both were better excecuted than the one he chose.
My sincerest and most heartfelt congratulation for Christian Hook on winning. I sincerely hope to see more of your work and wish you all the greatest success, You deserve this very much.
@@devinreese1397 exactly! the model is right in front of them and they are using their tablets XD then what is the use for filters, since they are just using a still picture and adding m style to it. One needs to capture the emotion of the model.
The guy who won's art is leaps and bounds above the others.. most cant even manage edges or values correctly. His work is professional level and it shows.
Got to gives them some time to get their artwork done, theses things are can’t be rushing , it’s about relaxing, taking time patience enjoying satisfaction with artists decisions
Imagine that, Aine is using her own eye! Many are too dependent on technology. They should try relying on their own abilities before going to the tech.
what the hell is that, the model is right in front of them and they are using their tablets XD then what is the use for filters, since they are just using a still picture and adding their style to it. One needs to capture the emotion of the model.
Here’s the problem… There are two criteria that can determine our judgement of a painting. 1. Is the subject pleasant to look at? 2. Is it well painted ? I can look at two portraits. Both painted equally well. But, I’m more likely to say that the portrait of the attractive person is a “better “ painting than the portrait of the unattractive person.
Guys are using cameras, tablets etc. What's the point of sitting the subject then every time.? No point I find. How they r best portrait artists, god knows
It seems so silly to have a person posing if you are gonna be painting a picture, those artists should be allowed but I guess there is just not enough people who can paint a living moving person.
Honestly I have no feeling for any of what they are doing. They all look even alike, and resemble a camera? That's supposed to be Art? If I were Mckellan I wouldn't even sit for that.
Christian is by far the better artist. Laura's works are just painted nicely. She has yet to find her own style. But seriously: given the model sitting in the front, photographing it and just looking at the photo while painting? How weird
I disagree. Christian may have the finished and flashy look for his paintings but the style overshadows the people in it. Laura, although more quiet and reserved in her approach, managed to capture something special in hers, at least in her Sir Ian portrait.
@@METALMARK1000 these are not models tho, they are random actors/famous people, they didn’t take any sort of course on how to sit properly, so it makes sense that they wouldn’t expect them to
I like and I don't like this painter. He produces fantastic likenesses. But in my own opinion he spoils them by all the splodges and slashes of odd colours etc in the rest of the painting. The paintings are always quite dull in terms of colours too. I'd really like to see him just paint a portrait with a likeness without all that extraneous stuff in the background.
What you seem to be asking for is realism, closer to how Laura paints. Christian deliberately makes his paintings with a more painterly, artistic flair as part of his own unique style. I have no doubt he could paint in the realist style, but it wouldn't necessarily be unique, and I don't see why he would bother doing it when he has such an amazing style all of his own.
i wholeheartedly agree. he is technically great but the flairs are gimmicky and add nothing. it worked in the commission but did nothing for the sitter. it seems like he's relying on random splotches as a style crutch
Maybe it's an unpopular opinion but I think that drawing using a photo reference and especially with a grid is cheating, even if it is allowed, it's still cheating, in my opinion.. Of course I think that all three of them are very talented artists, but Anya deserves a special mention for being able to draw the subject from life, only using her eyes for measurements, without using grids, or photos, without tracing anything, even if the proportions are not 100% exact.
I am always surprised by the tolerance - or is it just misunderstanding - the artists are set out to paint a portrait - and end up with - artists hacking reality - The commission painting from Laura was the only painting worth talking about - it was the only real portrait - all the other paintings were impressions - expressions - abstractions or just bad craftsmanship - and those judges? What are they judging, what are the criteria of their personal choices - it is time that the public gets a voice - get 100 random people make a choice - get 100 artists make their choice and then compare that to what the judges may want to justify - - what some of these judges come up with is just so far off from what art is about - it is not judging it is making personal choices that's all it is - and it's nearly always bad.
What a charming person is Ian McKellen!
رسووماتك كأنها من المرايا
I'm really impressed with Aine's painting style. From the chaos that's the water colours emerges something truly beautiful. And I adore her accent.
Those watercolours were exceptional.
All artists are talanted. However, Aine's way to work with watercolors and no devices is more chalanging. She ia really brave!

Laura really surprised me with the commission painting, lovely

Otherwise. We wouldn’t have a different taste in foods and other opinions
me neither. they're quite outstanding and close to each other in brilliance to me.
This was such a wholesome thing to watch.
The hours fly by contemplating these magnificent pictorial documents on the great art of portraiture.
That was very interesting! I especially enjoyed watching the progress of the paintings develop!
They were all amazing, but so happy with the choice of winner!
Finally, I agree with the decision! Fantastic!
I have watched this episode several times. One of my favorites.

What an honor to be in the same room as Ian... I wouldn't have been able to proceed painting. I think I'd be too emotional lol...
thank you so much for reposting this series!! such a joy
They are all wonderful . Love the boxer painting, incredible. Also Dame Kiri's painting is fantastic. The likeness and skill is sublime
Christian Hook was my favorite through whole competition! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🪅🎉🪅🎉🪅🎭
Have you seen his more recent work? He is incredible!

Sir Ian chose wisely. Enough said.

What a charming woman she is Kiri. So humble and kind. For a world star that's an art in itselvd
Brilliant!!! Love watching these.
Ian is a class act.
This old man is very touchy touchy with Lora 😮
I think he just likes beautiful people. Hes gay
A good painter is not just know how to paint but also has creativity. The winner has both.
I havent finished watching this but if Christian wins shut uppp
The judges/ critics
chiming in during the creative process, is So intrusive.
We need this kind of competition in USA
They got it right!. super reportage Merci.
Ioved his style ❤😊!!!
I think they should have all day to do their painting. Even I feel rushed and I'm just watching.
also this, why am i so attracted to laura and anya also techis dope for simplifying the sitter
In my opinion, the winner was the one that showed more consistency in likeness, style, proportion, technique...his paintings are brilliants
They all look alike to me, and I have definitely no feeling for any of them. They all sortof just look like photos.

They got it right!
Wholeheardtedly agree!

Would’ve voted the water colour artist.
super reportage Merci
Увидел только сейчас! Это очень круто!!!
That girl isnt drawing life potrait anymore... she is using digital reference with grids LOL
I artist I hope one day participate in such amazing champion
The honesty in this is highly refreshing.
REALLY????? The model still 4 hours and both of them using photos???
Theyre not copying the photos, they're using the photos to understand the view and figure out their painting
@disasteriz3766 It doesn't matter. It's disrespectful to the model.

Using photos during painting, especially in contest formula is joke

OK, but a portrait artist is usually a lot closer to the sitter. How can you possibly judge the nuances of skin tones from that distance?
didnt know you can use a grid in this competition
Christian is too good in his work
The watercolor artist capture the likeness of the model the worst, yet her portrait have more depth that the rest.

SUCH A PITY!
I wouldn't have chosen Christian, he produced most photo-like portraits.
Do you have the last episode with a portrait of Tom Jones?
Competition in art?
Christian Hood brillante.
56:39 thats my choice
honestly to me he just went for the pretty artist, not the art...
Well he is gay.. don’t know how much he cares about that
What program do they use to make a grid on photos to make it easier to draw?
I believe it’s procreate
make it easier to draw is just cheating
Terrible el bajo nivel de esos retratos
grid!
Also he was super rude to all the artists saying none of the final portraits look like him.
Guys are using cameras, tablets etc. What's the point of sitting the subject then every time.? No point I find. How they r best portrait artists, god knows
What did ya’ll think of Kiri te Kanawa’s reactions?
Personally I thought the dress rather took over.
Swear the old lady was speaking in iambic pentameter

you are an artist (supposedly), you have a model in front of you and what's the 1st thing you do? Take a picture of him...🤡

It is a technical skill taught in art classes to work with. A standard in art classroom
Watching these shows it’s very frustrating to me. He is always the least of my favorites to abstract for me.
