  • Dyshunda Curtis, a social studies teacher at Mason/Clark middle school in East St. Louis, is having her 8th-grade students write letters to 9/11 first responders and make drawings as a way to incorporate the day’s events into the curriculum. Curtis says the special project is used as a way to discuss race, religion, tolerance, and diversity with students who weren’t alive during the time of the attacks. After the letters and drawings are completed, Curtis’ students and other social studies students learning about 9/11 will have their finished works compiled into a quilted banner that will be on display in hallways of the school.
