I don't have a store close to me to be able to try them on but between the Nodin and this Gamma SL (the now Lightweight), how would you suggest each one for people? Both are thin and block wind in some level, seems like SL's durability is the biggest deciding factor? Thanks as always, great stuff.
Awesome video! I have bought many arcteryx pieces because of you now. I am wondering about the trino though, is it good for casual wear? I am not a runner, but i hike and work outdoors aswell. Can i wear a shirt under it, and a polo under that aswell maybe?
The trino is a nice comfortable jacket. yes, I would think that you could wear it everyday anywhere. It's a little unique , as it has the the windproof goretex infinium in parts, while the rest of the jacket is very breathable. Like the Gamma SL it's not going to keep you that warm..... it's a softshell. light to medium weight layers will work well with it.
I've read that the SL is not trim fitting like the Beta jackets or other trim fit shells. I'm in between sizes so wanted to know if I should go with M or L
It's not that big, but there is some room for layering under it, at least for me. I would say that if you want to layer some insulated pieces under it, then go larger, if just wearing it with light pieces then go with the M. You can always exchange it if needed, just don't cut off the tags before sending it back. But I think you'll be fine. They are not sized larger than normal. If you have any other Arc'teryx pieces, go with the size of your other pieces that you like.
As for the thicker LT being colder than SL, I also experienced that with a thicker "softshell"(with fleece backing) being colder than a light windshirt, esp on shoulder and back where it touches body. My theory is the conduction of heat away, combined with less airpockets. The LT's whole thick fabric material (that doesn't have much airpocket) has gotten cold, and where it touches body - sholders, etc - my body has to heat up the cold material, thus, the heat conducted away. It is made worse cuz LT fabric doesn't have much air-pockets (e.g. woolen fabric, pile/fleecy fabric, puffy, etc). On the other hand, SL is very thin so when it gets cold, there's much lesser material for body to heat up. Also, there's plenty of warm air between body & fabric so you won't feel that heat being sapped out. Unless the outer material is air-pocketed fabric or poor conductor of heat like wool, etc, thicker the material, more you have to heat it up, and tighter the jacket, more it touches the body, so heat gets conducted away. BTW, elastane, basically rubber, has no airpockets, and it is esp cold to touch. So stretchy (elastane), not much airpockets, and it's thick and it touches you - heat is sapped out.
Thank you for your comment. Your explanation is spot on. I'm glad to hear your thoughts, as I felt a little unsure talking about it. I felt the cold in the heavier gamma LT and not with the SL. So I wanted to include my honest thoughts in my review, but I basically guessed at why that may be. And I thought that if I were doing a more strenuous activity it would feel better with the gamma LT. Now I don't feel like I'm the only one that may have experienced this, and I'm not crazy. Thanks again!
The light blue is the v1 of this jacket and the darker one is the v2, which just came out 1 year after v1. The difference is the liner, old one only pockets and the new one all the way up to collar. And they are made by different facilities in two different country, with 2 different model number. The old one is slightly trimmer than the new one, so the dark blue may fit you in L. Like you, I have 2, one old in black and one new labyrinth. Like the jacket!
Can I use it as bottom layer? And over it the proton fl ? Cause it is more comfortable with the size. The xl size is better for put layer under it but the l fits better to wear it as stand alone.
I'm a little confused, on arcteryx's website and on other YT videos they say the gamma SL has a stormhood, just like the LT and the MX. But it doesn't seem to be the case on your video. Is stormhood a new feature on the 2022 version of the gamma SL ?
the hoods on both my SL's (the newer one and the older one) are smaller than the LT and MX. The difference is the LT and MX are "helmet compatible" storm hoods and the SL is not.
Okay, I’m having a hard time figuring out what this is good for. Basically, what does it do that a quality wind jacket won’t do, besides weigh more and cost more? I’ve already got a Kyanite, Atom SL, Atom LT, Proton LT, and Beta LT. For wind jackets I have a Houdini, and a Montbell Versalite that dual purposes as a wind shell/rain jacket. In your opinion would this fill a niche that I couldn’t fill with any of the other mentioned pieces? I considered getting one during the upcoming REI sale but I’m just not seeing a use for it.
It's a piece that you can wear over your Atom's and Proton as an extra "skin" on top. I don't know what the non arc'teryx pieces are. If you're not sure if you need it, ..... you probably don't. That being said, it is a really versatile light weight piece.
@@meandmyjackets Gotcha. Kind of the vibe I was getting as it seems to do the same thing the others do at a weight penalty with less resistance to the elements. May end up getting another Atom SL in a different color. Thanks for the reply
It's a softshell windbreaker that breathes better than your Houdini and is more abrasion resistant and less insulated than your Atoms. I would never take my Atom SL hiking with a heavy backpack, for instance. But, I'll throw my Gamma SL on for that. Love using it over my Proton FL. I can get down into the 20s F with that combination.
I'm new to the arcteryx game and looking for a rain shell for a warmer summer climate with humidity and heavy rains. Would this be a good pick for the breathability? Or would you suggest the beta or alpha lines for the heavy rain?
The gamma is definitely not a rain shell.. The hardshells such as the Beta's or Alpha's are exactly what you are looking for. My suggestion would be a Beta LT, or the Alpha SL anorak. I have the beta LT for this exact same use.... summer rain jacket.
Don’t like your background, so confusing, don’t like your lack off concentration. Change your surroundings to more natural environment, please, thank you, otherwise great reviews you’re doing a good job.👍🏻
Thanks for the video again! Do you have a video about comparison between Gamma SL hoody and Gamma SL jacket?
No, as far as I know they are the same with the exception of the hood.

Great review! How tall are you (just so I can be more certain on what size to order)?
6'2" 210 Lbs

Cool, thanks for your input. your right, my blue one is a little older. i ordered it from the outlet.
Wouldn’t it be better loose for summer anyways? Airy?
True, good point. I just tried a smaller size. There was a big difference in the body of the jacket.

I guess you could, but I would think that the softshell should be the outer layer..
@@meandmyjackets I want to say thank you for all your help. Thank you for taking time and be so patiently 😄✌️🙌

Hi, is this jacket packable?
I would say yes, it's pretty light weight. It's not going to take up much room in a backpack.
