- Giraffe under anesthesia: trimming hooves. One of our Rothschild giraffes had the hooves trimmed by our veterinarian. The animal had some difficulty walking. A general anesthetic in giraffes is exciting. Giraffes, with their enormous bodies, have a large heart that has to pump blood through the body to the brain. Due to the long neck, the distance between heart and brain is quite large in a giraffe, requiring extremely high blood pressure to supply the brain with oxygen. With an anesthetic, that blood pressure causes complications if the head suddenly falls to the ground. That is why we keep our head as high as possible during anesthesia (usually on a slanting ladder). Fortunately, it turned out to be an operation by the book! The vet was able to trim the hooves well, so that the animal can walk around unhindered again. Soon after the anesthesia, the animal stood proudly on its feet again, as if nothing had ever happened. All's well that ends well, thanks to good teamwork from the vet, the curators and the animal caretakers.
sjeeminee zo wordt ook wel immens goed in beeld gebracht hoe groot giraffen zijn. Die voeten zijn so groot als een mensenhoofd, daar wil je niet door getrapt worden.
Die kunnen makkelijk een leeuw dood trappen om bijvoorbeeld hun jong te beschermen
Ongelofelijk heh. Echt enorme dieren, sommige giraffen kunnen wel 5 tot 6 meter groot worden... 😱 De mannetjes zijn over het algemeen groter dan de vrouwtjes.
Zo dat is ook weer gedaan, fijn om weer zo verzorgd te zijn 🥰🥰😘
Even as babies they're so magnificent and powerful yet graceful creatures!

Netjes gedaan! Ik heb dit ook een keer moeten doen bij geiten, maar dat is wel makkelijker dan bij een giraf haha :)

Waarom en hoe vaak wordt dit gedaan?
Normaal gesproken doen we dit niet routine matig bij giraffen! Deze giraffe had last van de lengte van de hoeven, vandaar dat we moesten ingrijpen. Het is dus zeer uitzonderlijk dat we dit doen! 🦒
Wat is er nu precies gedaan?
De hoeven van de giraffe waren te lang die heeft de dierenarts geknipt. Te lange hoeven kunnen namelijk voor problemen zorgen. De dierenarts heeft de hoeven bijgewerkt en nu loopt het dier weer rond als vanouds.
