And she was in her 50s. It was like I had seen the magical Elven Queen herself, in person, right there in front of me. She was hypnotic. No wonder Bogie was entranced!

She & Bogey fell in love on this set - and their chemistry shows. Bogey used to say, "When you meet her, you'll fall in love with her.....just like we all have!" She wrote a very good book, as well - about how she ended up in the movie industry (she didn't come from an acting family) & her life with and after Bogey died. That book (titled 'By Myself') is now available in audio, as well. She, herself, narrates most of the book - So you can hear HER story in HER lovely voice. If you're interested.

I did a show with Steve Allen once, running lights. He had a cold so we dimmed the two 2,000 watt followspots so they wouldn't glare too brightly in his face. It was a road show and Steve was quick and nimble with his gags, ad libbing a lot. One of his gags was to refer to a local town with an odd name and ask: "Did you folks have a contest to name this town?"
Yes, Steve's quick wit was awesome. I love how he sometimes chuckles after coming out with a funny line: I think his subconscious comes up with the line and he says it even before he has a chance to think about it. The chuckle comes after he realizes the humor in what he just said. Brilliant comedic mind.

Wow- Lauren always had that deep voice. Very surprising.
aliciaanne Howard Hawks taught her to speak like that while filming To Have and Have Not. He had her read out lines for hours and scream until her voice lowered. Before that she had a nasally New York accent.
