Great review/reaction! Trying to sort out Lewis's "contributions" by their "sexiness" is a good idea, BUT the gropey guy in the car is Bill Rebane himself! So that was part of the original footage. Also, Rebane shot all the Chicago footage at the end, so that includes the bald guy delivering the telegram, who otherwise seems to be an earlier actor reappearing as older in the new footage. It's a mess! There's a dvd where Rebane does a commentary track and blames running out of money on those damned Chicago unions!

@@Weiselberry Not really that odd. Rebane said "I liked her very much, be assured, I wrote enough stuff to lengthen that scene. I wanted to milk that scene because she was beautiful." He also said that in the script he stole her from the guy she was with in the club. Funny she at first submits to him in the car (necking) when she supposedly didn't even know him!

Well, Jerome, you can put me down as a puzzled man of courage. I just finished watching this film and, while I didn't get the wim-wams, I did find myself entertained by the sheer ineptness of it. It helped that I didn't even try to follow the "plot" or keep track of characters. I just let them all blur together into "scientist type person," "military type person" and "other type person." I especially liked the scene of the couple sitting in a totally silent restaurant.
    "You remember that song?"
    Total silence.
    "Would you like to dance?"
    "No."
    "Good."

    • @Weiselberry
      @Weiselberry  6 месяцев назад +6

Haha, I give you lots of credit for getting through it! My biggest problem with differentiating the characters that way is that sometimes "other type person" turned out ALSO to be "scientist type person", or at least it seemed like the same actor, but I was never 100% sure about anyone. Yes, that moment was great. :D

Miss W. you have introduced us to some odd movies in the past but this one takes the biscuit. I didn't think that any movie could surpass Plan 9 from Outer Space for lunacy, but I was wrong. As for its popularity in Turkey...😮 I'm genuinely puzzled. However, your review was entertaining as ever. You have brightened up another rainy day in Ireland.

Blood turns to powder? If Michael Crichton saw that and was inspired by that detail before writing The Andromeda Strain, that might be the one positive impact this movie ever had. The wildly spliced-together nature of this sounds like how They Saved Hitler's Brain ended up. You and your mother are valiant souls, Rome. Owl be seeing you.

I was probably the one who commented that it might be a fun movie so I guess I'm to blame. A web review once suggested that the helicopter pilot had the radio in his mouth which was why his transmission was so fuzzy. Now the scene where they find Dr. Logan's body had actress June Travis, a very attractive lady, IMHO, covering her face presumably in shock or perhaps trying not to ruin the take by laughing at the expression on his face. Why wasn't John Carradine in this film? I never watched MST3K but first saw it around 1990 late one night on Shock Theater. Anyway, I love your videos and always look forward to them!😊

Watching this film twice in a short space of time must’ve been a tough task for you because i struggled watching it once lol. I am glad I’ve seen it and there’s things about it that I’ll remember, the opening song ( catchy!) and the image of Henry Hite walking around looking lost, and the coffee table we see early in the film, it looks massive for such a small room, perhaps perspective distortion, the film really was boring though and the cast had so little chemistry together that it felt awkward. That lady looking for gas in the white convertible was the only character i can think of that didn’t seem like an emotionless robot, even the go-go dancers were odd, it’s a strange thing how little fun they seemed to be having while dancing, not a smile amongst them and sequence went on for so long, the kissing scene too, the actors must’ve felt like the cut would never come. I could just about hear the dialogue but still found it difficult to understand, the narrator attempting to make the story less confusing but somehow making it more confusing didn’t help either, “a space capsule was launched to observe another object, satellites that no nation launched “ Huh? alright. The tiny narrow space capsule made me chuckle too, it was like an upright casket and it’s no wonder Daniels was walking around confused because he must’ve been banging his head against the walls in that tiny thing on his mission and had serious concussion. I’m not convinced Douglas became a giant because of the radiation I think he was infected by giantism because at some point he touched that huge mutant coffee table. The camera positions and lack of movement along with the takes made the whole thing feel lifeless, you could also feel the lack of direction because a majority of stage plays we see from a static position without wide angles and closeups and edits are usually full of life but this film had no life in it at all. I thought they really wasted Henry Hite because they didn’t film him against or next to someone of average height in a two-shot or wide shot, well there was that one strangulation scene but Hale is only seen from the waist or chest up, he could be in a tree or standing on a box, you can tell he’s tall and gangly when walking towards camera but it would be tough to guess he’s over eight feet tall. I loved the moment when the person off camera made the unenthusiastic phone ring sound lol.
Off topic, I’ve seen three episodes of ‘ Sugar’ the show i mentioned last week, not great, think I’m out lol.
CinemaCon was on this past week and apparently it was revealed that Monarch is getting a second season :0 ugh, and Apple has more shows planned from the MonsterVerse :/ on a lighter or darker note it was also announced that Alex Kurtzman has hired an iffy comedy writer to make a Star Trek origin film D: ugh again.
Great review as always, interesting and funny :)

"Huh?" is right! I was scratching my head over that "satellites that no nation launched" line too. I guess it's meant to suggest the object is perhaps extraterrestrial in origin, but it's put in such a clumsy way. My mom laughed at how tiny the space capsule was, but I can't say either of us noticed the coffee table was huge, haha. Good point about the lack of perspective with Henry Hite! In all the photographs I saw of him, there was something else in the shot to help you realize just how tall he was. You don't get that sense in the movie, and he's severely underused overall.
I heard about Monarch getting the go-ahead for another season and MORE spin-off shows. Yay. I kind of thought studios would have learned something from the questionable success of Disney's Star Wars and Marvel spin-off shows, but I guess if they feel there's profit there... As for the other news: nah, I'm good, haha.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this movie! Congratulations on getting through it all in one piece. :)

Mistie here. Here is a short list of films I cane to love, in a twisted way, from watching MST3K:
Bride of the Monster - Ed Wood produced and Bella Lugosi's last featured role.
Manos, the Hands of Fate - Actually, this is the film the crew labels the worst. Unwatchable, without the riffs, but no one could ever forget Torgo, or The Master. The film has an interesting history, made by fertilizer salesman, Hal Warren. The actor John Reynolds, soon died of a drug overdose.
Robot Monster - Which you have previously reviewed, I am fond of this film.
The Sidehackers - Sixties flavored motorcycling starring Ross Hagen as Rommel,
The Giant Gila Monster - Hot rods and hep teens, with a couple notable character actors, theremin music, and a dreary setting.
The Mad Monster - Glen Strange and George Zucco star in this silly old werewolf film.
I am a geezer, and I have loose screws. I have begun to shed parts.
    C;est la vie.

Ok, "Zombified Abraham Lincoln" sounds like a grunge band. 😂
I indeed saw this movie as a MST3K episode, and the only thing that stuck with me was that it made "Manos, Hands of Fate" - another MST3K movie riff - seem
coherent by comparison. At least Manos had a discernable (albeit weedy) plot trail you could follow. It's odd that Monster a Go-Go is popular in Turkey . . . maybe that translation had some Wilhelm screams thrown in? 😄
Thank you for an entertaining review!

Nothing demonstrates your loving devotion to these genre movies more than your review of this one. It is that devotion which, whether the film you’re reviewing deserves it or not, I find most admirable and enjoyable about your channel, and why I always enjoy watching you. I’m not going to see this movie, because I know your review is far more entertaining, interesting, and intelligent than it is. And that’s the wonderful and unique thing about your film reviews. I can count on being delighted by a review of even the most woefully un-delightful movie! Of course, I cannot end without recommending another film of similar ick…I mean ilk: “The Creeping Terror” (not to be confused with “The Creeping Unknown”, the American title, as you know, of “The Quatermass Xperiment”).

Wow, where to start? This was an interesting exercise; it really sets a baseline of badness to compare to all others. I liked the opening music, gave me vibes of Village of the Giants (also made that year, and pretty good). But then it seems the band's keyboard player went off by himself to noodle on some keyboard for most of the movie. I had trouble with the sound as well, but found another version on YT with slightly better sound. Didn't help much. One thing that impressed me was the tiny restaurant scene, with a chef's hands preparing a flaming dish. Having worked in food service for several years, that looked authentic to me. And then the closeup of the woman's hands stirring her drink. An actual closeup! It's almost like the scene was shoehorned in from another movie, or maybe a soap opera. Thanks for your clear-eyed appraisal, no one does it better. "Brrrmph" - whoops there's my phone, gotta go. Have a great week, J.

That is one heck of a brave reviewer to tackle the great cinematic event known as MONSTER A-GO GO, a triumph of creatively unequaled in film history. (Btw, there is no truth to the rumor that this film was directed by David Lean, who decided to take his name off the film over creative differences with the producers who wanted to replace the sound of a guy on the set making a "ringing" sound with his mouth with an actual phone ringing sound. )
Wow. Really fun to have you go through this, yh, "mess" (which, i think, is too kind a word for this, uh, "mess") . So many examples of glaring ineptness. It's like kids made it Or should i say DUMB kids, as most kids would probably do a better job!)

    Hi Jerome!
I possess a terrific book on this film called “Bill Rebane’s Monster A Go-Go Decoded,” by Kevin Scott Collier, 2019, available on Amazon. In it, Mr. Collier explains all the mysteries of the film’s production and the seemingly inexplicable and irrational scenes.
Indeed, some of the main actors were replaced at one point, but not by Herschell Gordon Lewis (HGL). The film ran out of money at one point and after about two years or so, when they resumed filming, some of the original actors were unavailable. So they had to continue with new actors and new parts. The twist party scene was filmed by Rebane. In fact, he’s in it. He’s the guy who “steals” the girl from the party. The girl’s name is Lorri Perry and she’s actually the daughter of George Perry who played both Dr. Logans in the film. And Mr. Perry looks different in the latter part of the film when he plays the brother of the original Dr. Logan, not because he’d aged and got bald in the interim - there was only a 2 year gap. To play the brother, Perry removed his wig, grew a goatee, and put on eyeglasses. The only extra scenes added by HGL were the sunbathing girls being chased away by the monster, the scenes showing his secretary at her desk, some kids shooting pool, and a guy reading a girlie calendar. These additional scenes were put in to pad out the movie’s running time. Everything else was Rebane’s footage, and HGL haphazardly cobbled things together and added the narration to “clarify” things. The ending we see is not what Rebane intended. Some scenes were filmed but went missing, so HGL did what he could with what he had. BTW, Lewis wrote the song “Go Monster Go”, and I presume all the other music. The incidental music has the same flavour and sparseness as the music in Herschell’s “Blood Feast,” which he had played himself. But I’m rambling. Can you tell I love this movie?
I do so love your reviews. I think that you are the best film reviewer on RUclips. For ‘bad” films like this one (and any film for that matter), your reviews don’t come across as condescending in any way. And that is so refreshing. Love from Montreal.

Ah, so *most* of my guesses were incorrect, hahaha. Oh, well. Too bad I can't go in and make corrections. Thanks for all the additional information! Honestly, it makes the final product seem even stranger. The way I had figured it, it was when Lewis took over that things went off the rails. But it sounds like the majority of the finished product is still Rebane's footage, including many of the offbeat scenes.

6:44 Bill Rebane was a clueless amateur of 24 trying to make a movie. According to him, what he made was a complete film and all the footage HGL had to fill in later was unnecessary.
CASE IN POINT if it was unnecessary, HGL never would have paid for the new footage.
I can tell them apart as I've not only seen further Bill Rebane movies, I've also had the misfortune to see movies made by HGL.... I even have his BD set.
    10:33 Rebane
    14:22 HGL
    10:49 HGL.
11:47 Rebane. The whole sequence with emergency vehicle "production value" in downtown Chicago was Rebane.
I would LOVE to pick up the Bill Rebane set for Monster a-Go-Go as that movie can send me into gales of laughter even without the MST3k version but without the Giant Spider Invasion, I cannot justify it as THE Bill Rebane set.

Usually when someone remakes or reboots a movie, I question if it's really necessary, and am annoyed at the lack of new ideas. In this case, it might be a good project for amateur filmmakers - can they take this premise and any interesting elements, and turn it into a movie that's actually good & creepy, or even so bad it's amusing?

H G Lewis was a dodgy character. His status as a trailblazing icon who challenged an era's restrictive codes of decency is well deserved, but he never had the slightest interest in making a legitimately good film...he simply laid the shocks on with a trowel for a quick cash-grab. He would have picked your nose for a dollar. I guarantee it.

I'm new to your channel - have you reviewed Roger Corman's NOT OF THIS EARTH (1957)? It's available for free on RUclips and, despite its own low budget, is the polar opposite of Z-grade science-fiction horror. There's also CURSE OF THE DEMON (aka NIGHT OF THE DEMON) from 1957 (always available on TCM at Halloween, and possibly here on RUclips), a little gem of direction, writing and acting marred only by some poor special effects, which the studio insisted on inserting over the director's objections. Particularly noteworthy is Niall MacGinnis, who not only talks but looks like the real-life occultist Aleister Crowley.
