Living as an expat in Panama

- I get asked all the time why it is that my family and I have moved from Canada to Panama, so I wanted to share some of those reasons for you in this video. Relocating to another country with a totally different culture isn't for everyone, but it's definitely becoming more common. The hard part is leaving family behind and that's why we plan to spend summers back in Canada with family.

Tatiana I started to watch your videos when I first started my online software business in 2020, and I remember binge watching your content while working and chatting with my then Brazilian girlfriend on the video call in my Las Vegas Apartment. I remember seeing you showing off your life in Panama, and because I was also binge watching Nomad Capitalist for almost a year by then, I started to watch his channel in 2019 December when I graduated from university. Your nomadic lifestyle and life in Panama, especially your ocean view apartment impressed me.
I’d say your life in Panama was one of the confirmations that inspired me to eventually take action and became a nomad business owner as well. And it has been a tremendous journey. I am still exploring more in the world and in business.
Even just a few weeks ago I saw your old video in which you talked about moving to California, and your desire for a life in Hawaii, and I was wondering if you are still taking that path, but I had a feeling that you probably won’t do that anymore, because California and Hawaii taxes are indeed not for us. And today you showed me that my assumption was right! 😂
I had that assumption because after spending half a year in different countries in Latin America, the desire of living in California, Hawaii, or Vancouver decreases dramatically, especially at the current stage of being in 20s and building up a business and growing income, without a tax responsibility, life is indeed way simpler, and I also feel more motivated to build business more and make more money. So I knew after living in a base in Panama City, you would sort of get addicted to the good things there, like weather, overall safety, nature, maid services, territorial taxes, and Spanish speaking environment.
Also just like what you said, having help with household errands absolutely makes life better. I lived in Asuncion, Paraguay in February and March this year and I loved the fact that my high end apartment came with a maid who takes care of daily cleaning work. As a young man who absolutely hates any sort of housework, especially since I have been only living in hotels with services since 2021 February after I moved out of Las Vegas, having affordable access to maid services is totally a plus that lots of short term travelers or digital nomads who live in budget don’t talk about.
I went to Panama City in January this year on a flight from Denver, I was shocked by the heat there (due to sudden temperature increase from my ski trips), but you are totally right, the sunshine, the beaches and the vibrance of nature is unparalleled. I personally prefer colder places and ski trips, but being able to live in a country like Panama from time to time is absolutely a good switch of mental mood in life.
Too many Americans or Canadians are too stuck by their own false images of other countries, and many would even think these places are not livable in their standards and they are from the end all and be all countries, which is basically the brand image media built up through decades. I’m glad travel has helped you grow such a worldly view, as it has on myself as well.
Also I like that Panama has lots of Chinese food due to the Chinese communities in Panama through history, because most of other off the track destinations in Latin America don’t have. 😊
Keep up with your good work Tatiana!! 🎉
It was fun reading your comment, thanks for sharing all that! I'm glad to know that sharing my lifestyle throughout the years helped inspire you to seek out living in a different country. Like I said in the video, it's not for everyone but when it works it works incredibly well and for us, at this stage of life that's the case. Maybe in 15 years we will move back to North America but for now we like it here and we have the perfect balance with having 2 other homes in Canada that we can visit for variety. I wish you continued success!!
Welcome Back Tatiana!!and I am so so so happy to see you back again and I really missed your videos so so much and I will support you till end🥺🥺💖
Aw thank you so much
Love this! So awesome to hear you talk about our querrida Panama :) Keep spreading the word Tatiana!!
Thank you for being so open and an inspiration! Lots of love
Thanks Tatiana. While the tax for high income earners in Canada is 50% tax, for the State of California it is a 52.8% tax.
Yes and those taxes are on the rise!
Actually in British Columbia which is where she’s from is 53.5% at the highest bracket 😢
This was lovely; thank you. I lived one year in Panama in the ‘90’s & have been back twice to visit friends I still have there. I frequently went to Playa Huertes, near Portobelo, not far from your location. It appears that whole area has been updated. The Caribbean side is especially gorgeous. It is my dream to move with my husband back to Panama but my Spanish is muy poquito. The prices are going up & up. But once you’ve lived in Panama, you never forget its beauty or its people.
I will follow your page.
Thank you Tatiana for sharing your experience with us 🙏
My pleasure 😊
Hi Tatiana,
Very interesting to hear how well you explain your decision to settle down with your family here in Panama.
It’s very instructive and inspiring for someone who been born in Panama and having become a Canadian citizen is now considering to return and live in Panama . Thanks so much
Thanks Tatiana, I enjoyed your quiet conversational approach. I am retired South of you in Colombia but have never been to Panama so I've been watching quite a few videos about it. I find that the creators of the videos project their voice out of the normal range of volume, pace, inflection, etc. whereas you remain calm as if you're sitting in the same room with your viewers. I don't know how you overcame the bouncy room accoustics that plague so many videos. You must have high end equipment?
I needed this, thank you so much!!! I'm going out of my mind with the impending doom of the American culture and was starting to get so depressed. I said yesterday Im packing my bags and leaving the county but didn't know where to start. This is very helpful
Very inspirational, thank you
Thank you for sharing. I really feel what you say and me and my partner are in a similar situation, looking for a new place to settle 🌹glad you’ve found yours 😊
Thanks! I'm sure you will find yours with time.
Absolutely there are safe and unsafe. I’m really encouraged you have found a great place because my family felt very unsafe in Panama City. Also the locals were rude 😢 but I’m certainly open to exploring more of it
Love your input on the subject. I am from the US and my wife is from Colombia, we or I have aspirations of buying a place or spending 6-8 months in Santa Marta, and i am in love with the idea but trying to layout the plan financially to do it, we are in a good spot, but not quite there. Your vid encouraged me to be more bold. I have friends a few who are doing this, but in the USA, and they love it.
Tatiana you are just a wholesome exceptional woman. Even in how you carry yourself. You inspire me. Much love for the queen tht you are😊
That's so sweet, thanks!
We're Canadians who watch you and stefan. Have for years. Anyways we've been thinking of exploring our options too so this is great. We're taking a cruise to Panama in two weeks. It should be nice too see it!
Beautiful as always 🫶🏻
Thank you!!
Congratulations with your new “digs”! Hope you had a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2024!
Much love to you and your family 🌞🌞🪐
Great place Panama. I have lived in Panama for the past 24 years. Became a Panamanian citizen 11 years ago. I am glad you promete Panama.
So happy for you and your family’s journey! 🥰 Also love your make up and outfit today, what lipstick are you wearing? 💄 I need it 😅
Thanks
Hugs! ❤ You'll do just fine. Just follow your intuition.
Thank you, I will
Love Love Panama. I live mostly in Costa Rica and Vancouver. I have considered Panama as CR is getting sooo expensive 😢.
This journey is super interesting!! because I, being an entrepreneur in trading, real estate, and a traveler, I am leaving France which is a very taxed country and without business education so to be between the United States, the Caribbean and towards the Emirates and indeed I am thinking about moving my business to Panama while looking at good tax residences (because I don't plan to live there yet) with contacts in taxation because being single without children I am still testing a few places (including Colombia soon) by investing in parallel because the goal is is investing cash if purchasing and sheltering your wife and child if that happens.... you have to make a tailor-made life with entrepreneurship because when people have no choice because of the script of society they also have no geographical or financial freedoms....
it makes me want to visit buenaventura panama and check it out! Sounds so beautiful.
You should!
Love this- very insightful- to know whats possible
You should check out the bucket list family, they live in Hawaii and travelling with their children all around the world. They are amazing :-)
Yea I've seen a couple of their videos, they look great!
Oh, welcome back to Panama!
I thought you settled back to Canada.
I have a family of 3 kids, and Panama is still a viable option for my family. Even I have location freedom to choose other countries.
Thanks! That's fantastic, it's definitely a lot more to consider when you have young children.
We are looking to retire to Panama in 3 to 4 years. I am thinking about starting a youtube channel to document all the things we must do over the next few years to make it happen.
What about receiving packages and freah organic food access? I hear their arent real house addresses and uou have to go get packages from store front? Have you noticed high prices of groceries or limited supply?
Hi! Don’t feel pressured, but if you’re willing, could you give recommendations for dermatologists or medispas with a good reputation that you’ve visited in Panama? We’re thinking of moving and I’m hoping I can keep up my aesthetic routine! Thank you for sharing!
Hi Tatiana. We are thinking of moving to Panama with our 2 kids and we are researching Buenaventura. Are there dentists, ophthalmologists, family doctors and labs (for taking blood and urine tests) nearby?
Nice video but… Panama is in North America just as Canada is. They call it a Central American Country, but it is in N. America. I too am looking at eventually living there. 🇵🇦 🙌🏽
Tatiana, can you recommend safety tips for females traveling solo. I am burnt out of living to pay bills in the US. Thx, M❤
Hi
Hi Tatiana, I was wondering if you and Stefan ever considered homeschooling?
❤❤❤
❤
Do you learn Spanish? How does it go for you?
Yes, I can understand almost everything but still working on my speaking
is yr son a Canadian citizen or Panama citizen ?
Canadian! But I think I will have my second child in Panama.
@@TatianaJames even if baby is born in Panama, he or she can still be a Canadian citizen if parents are Canadians ... am I right ?
I am from Singapore... so not sure how it works there
Hi Tatiana love you lots. been watching since the beginning i would love to send you a dm but i hope your doing okay making these videos recently. Health comes first and these 5g system is not reducing our anxiety out here and we out here also. Id love to see a blog post about your videos that way you dont have to deal wih he hasstle physically speaking truth. Love you so much
Panama is in the same American continent as Canada and The US.
How is it a different continent? Panama is still North America.
Panama is Central America
Its last section of central America and part is in south America. Essentially in another continent.
Panama is in Central America .
If I said it's a different continent then I misspoke, it's a different region. North America is completely different than Central and South America, in every single way... so they definitely feel like continents apart.
Why didn’t you incorporate though? There only 10-15% tax after you write off all the expenses …
Same continent loka lol but we get it
If you are not Panamanian how do you socialize?
Only with Expats?
I guess you feel more comfortable speaking English
I have Panamanian friends here, all of them speak English. There's also some expats here.
@@TatianaJames do you ever feel "guilt" when your wealth is contrasted with poverty in many countries like Panama or Kenya? Not saying it's your fault
@@eveliinatistelgren172 do you think that rich panamanians dont exist goofy blonde 😪
PANAMA IS AWESOME TIL THE COUNTRY IS PROTESTING. THEN NOT SO MUCH!!
Your country protest too… 😑
The new American/ Canadian dream is to leave the country.
This is the age old colonization technique... fleeing the US/Canada to a poor country where taxes are still low, while of course keeping the citizenship and all the perks that come with it, but doing everything to avoid paying anything back. If the new place is so wonderful, give up your citizenship and have only local citizenship, with the same rights as them and having no possibility to flee back to your 1st world safety when things turn downwards. Then we'll talk.
1st world countries are rich because they had people working in them and building up the place. Lets suppose everyone is able to flee and avoid taxes in the US/Canada, what do you think will become of your safe place in a very short time? And I live in Europe so have no personal care towards any of the places.
Taxes are voluntary
Hi Tatiana, is that a Hebrew tattoo on your arm? :)
Your videos are fantastic, Tatiana. Good info for people looking to live in Panama. I sent you a private message on Instagram about meeting up for some collab work while im in Panama for the next 4 weeks or so! Love to hear from you 🙂
