- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I buy a lot of lapidary supplies from The Rock Shed. I don't make money from your purchases there, but they have good prices and good service. This is where I buy my finer grits and polish.

Wow! Learned something new -- omar rock. I'm in the Pacific NW and don't think I've ever seen one. Great find. Rob, I love to hear you say "keeper" and not hear a sploosh as it stays behind. Another fun hunt....thanks.
I do keep a rock every now and then.
@@MichiganRocks Let's refer to that as 'discerning'. Enjoyed the hunt!
Nice video interesting
Watching you to get myself through slow blood sugar. You better have some sweet finds!
Good luck. I get that sometimes. Not fun.
Great video but in my opinion way too short, had to watch it twice. I look forward to watching every Friday.
Sorry about that, it was a short hunt that day.
I saw the glow! Nice finds!
Beautiful views, cool finds. The reverse omar is awesome.
I've had the opportunity to stand on the Omarolluk Formation in the Belcher Islands of Hudson Bay. Quite the experience to know exactly where Omars come from, and very valuable in studying the movement of glaciers.
I've read that about using them to study glaciers. Hey! I knew something before you told me! Of course I haven't actually been to the source of the omars. So what does the formation look like? Is it one, big, holey mountain? Or are the rocks there small like we found on this beach? I assume they are worn down from their trip o the glacier and their time in the water, but I don't know how much. I don't seem to find many much bigger than a baseball. Are they rounded up in Canada or are they more angular?
@@MichiganRocks It's a small area of the Islands where these come from. The entire chain (about 1,500 islands in all) are low, rolling hills of sedimentary and some volcanics, all slightly metamorphosed. The Omarolluk itself is a silicious precambrian graywacke with numerous cancerous concretions. As the concretions erode, they leave the classic "hole" that makes an Omar.
@@MichiganRocks The formation itself looks just like the rounded cobbles; dark gray with occasional buff- coloured concretions. Most of the bedrock has been glacially eroded and polished. There are also cobbles scattered about the area and downstream of the outcrops, but I don't recall seeing anything huge there.
Nice that someone can pronounce our states interesting names of locations. A plus beautiful scenery and ROCKS W/ROB!
Hi, I am in Northern Wisconsin & live close to UP border . Where is the best Agate spots to go too in either top of UP, Calumet area or along top of Wis along Lake Superior, (Bayfield over to Superior/Duluth???) I am looking for Agate, but have no idea if I am near great rock coast shores here of Lake Superior?
I like the Mouth of the Gratiot River. McClain State Park is also nice and has completely different rocks. You can find prehnite at both places, so check out what U.P. prehnite looks like before you go. If course there are also a lot of mine tailings piles in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Cliff mine is a legal place to hunt rocks and if you go behind the quarry into the woods, or to the right of the big pile in the woods, there are some really cool old ruins to look at. I have a video that I'm going to post her one of these days. I don't spend much time west of Houghton, so I can't tell you much about that area.
Can't really go wrong anywhere between the Montreal River north of Ironwood and Copper Harbor, then between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point. Just got to put the effort in and you'll find some.
Beautiful scenery and some nice rocks. Could easily spend most of the day there watching the waves

Just started hand polishing my finds after watching your videos, and have finally bought snorkeling gear to maximize my chances of finding stuff around my area. Love your videos, they always get me driving to the beach or polishing something. Thanks for the inspiration. Much appreciated, from Berrien County, Michigan.
I'm glad you're having fun and finding some rocks.
Oh that was great. I wish it was a longer video. We did the walking towards the sun in Saudi Arabi to find desert diamonds. That is fun to see them glowing like that.
It was a short hunt. We hit a couple other beaches that day and move campsites too. It’s a lot of driving in that area to get from one beach to another.
Omar rocks... that's a new name to me. I have a few of those. Didn't know they even had a name other than "kinda cool".
The full name is “omarolluk”. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omarolluk
Very beautiful scenery around there, lots of beauties you were finding
You can't go wrong here. If you don't find any good rocks, it's still a pretty beach.
I Still have quite a few Lk Superior rocks in my small rock garden.
Mostly from the Picture Rocks to Grand Marais shorelines.
There are some pretty rocks in that area, aren't there? You might not want to advertise that some are from Pictured rocks, though. You're not supposed to take rocks from there.
Glad you have your buddy. Safety in numbers...but, more important, different eyes see different things😀
Younger eyes seem to see more than older eyes too.
Can you share with me where you and sam climbed down the tree to get to the beach on Superior??I really want to find an agate!!!and some galaxy stone!!! Feel free to p.m me locations you don't want known publicly
That was in a different video. studio.ruclips.net/user/videoPNOtX6yY9fg/edit
Read the description. The GPS coordinates are there. Read the whole thing because I have been blamed by a local for people trespassing near there.
Heading towards Port Huron tomorrow to do some rock hunting. Never been before. Any recommendations as to where to go? New to rock hunting and really enjoy your videos!!!
I have never hunted near Port Huron, so you’re on your own.
Still can’t find a name of my rock? It looks like brown small crystal in sandstone. I’ve found it in brown, amber color and white.Every video and post I have not seen it yet. It polishes real nice but you have to work the stone. Any ideas, help
Can you post a picture of it somewhere and then put a link here. Imgur lets you post a picture without having an account.
Nice finds. 👍 Always happy for new videos.
That's good, because I'm happy to keep making them.
Fun hunt! The rock on the left at the end looked like a sombrero.
I guess that's why Sam named it the sombrero rock. Did I just catch you watching with the sound off?
@@MichiganRocks :'D I had CC on, because I was watching while playing a game via Zoom with my kids.
@@KatyDidRocks I guess I’ll forgive you this time.
Beautiful beach! Sweet finds as usual. Hope you are doing well!
I'm doing great. Your channel is really growing fast.
Will be visiting this spot this coming week, I sure hope we have conditions like this, although we'll be prepared for anything weather wise. Just have to say in closing that I really enjoy your videos in the U.P. do you have a video of a visit to the Keweenaw Peninsula by any chance? If not I bet it would make for a great addition to your already great collection of videos. Thanks for these great getaways.
I have several ready to go from the Keweenaw. I’ll be posting the first one next Friday.
@@MichiganRocks I'll be looking forward to watching them!
Ok , well we tried to go to the Two Hearted River but with no signal we couldn't find it. We did find the light house however. Lots of signs showing the way. We wanted to camp there. Drove around them woods for 3 + hours and never found it. Maybe next time we will find it.
I have a map from a gas station or maybe from Muskallonge State Park that I use. It’s tricky and some of the road signs don’t match my map. My Jeep’s GPS works fine there, so that helps.
@@MichiganRocks I will have to pick up a map. My phone is all I have for GPS and NO cell signal there at all. I'll find it one of these days.
Very cool...Thank's
I haven't been to the mouth of the Two Hearted in years. Cool place!
Visited the mouth of the Two-Hearted a couple years before the fire. The Rainbow Lodge store had a huge jar full of agates. Was the lodge rebuilt after the fire?
I had not been there before the fire, so I can't say for sure. I do know that just before the campground, there's a grass landing strip, a small chapel, and some small cabins for rent. I don't know the name of the cabins. The are the cabins are in is just at the top of the hill before driving into the campground and is all burnt. The campground was saved.
@@MichiganRocks Looked around a little and found their FB page showing the rebuild. The place looks to be for sale. we made it to Crisp this summer and hope to get back to the two hearted next summer.
I got educated....thank you.
That's what I'm here for. You're welcome.
Knew with both of you there you'd both find beautiful and in this case unique rocks!!!
You sure find some beautiful rocks !! Do you sell any ? My Grandpa got me into the hobby in 1955. Agates are my favorite, but you sure collect some gorgeous species I am drooling at !!! Thank you for sharing your finds !
Nope, I don't sell any. It's much more fun to tumble you own. Have you thought about buying a tumbler?
@@MichiganRocks Yes I have considered a tumbler. Do you recommend a decent to to get ? at 69, I would go overkill rather than have to buy a better one down the road. The road is getting short !!
@@369dusty I really like Lortone Tumblers. I have heard good things about the 15 lb. Thumlers Tumbler, but I have only tried a small Thumlers and the lids leak all the time. Stay away from the National Geographic tumbler and the Harbor Freight tumblers.
I start my rocks in a rotary tumbler and then finish them in a vibratory tumbler. I LOVE my Lot-O vibratory tumbler. It makes producing very shiny rocks easy.
If you haven't watched it yet, check out my video on tumbling crazy lace agate. It shows my whole procedure. ruclips.net/video/ksrmpPZrAuU/видео.html
the sombrero omar was very cool.
Yes it was. I don't think I've seen another like that.
Oh man such a lucky find, finding thr hag stone. That is the one with the hole in it.. I've looked for one whenever I've gone out hounding so for nothing..
I found five stones with holes the other day, one was a double hole rock. The day after this video we found four or five too.
@@MichiganRocks oh that is amazing. They are also known as hag stone's..
Any reason they don't replant trees in the burned out areas? 0:52 that looks like So. Cal. beach sand!!!
There are young trees coming up in a lot of places. I had never been there before the fire, but it seems to be a lot of jack pine in the area. Jack pine cones only open up to release their seeds when they heat up in a fire. There was a huge forest fire when I was a kid that was caused by intentionally burning an area to make new habitat for the Kirtland warblers. Kirtland warblers only breed in young jack pines and young jackpines need a forest fire to get started. Anyhow, I don't know the answer to your question, but I suspect that the trees are growing up naturally from seed. www.fws.gov/endangered/news/episodes/bu-10-2011/kirtlands_warbler/index.html
@@MichiganRocks thanks for the link, appreciate the in-depth response.
Que bonito ohhhh las piedras??? Colores los beiges otro naranja pokito
Adding another place to visit, on my long list. Have you ever rockhounded Isle Royale?
It’s illegal to take rocks from Isle Royale. I have never been there, but I’d love to go sometime.
@@MichiganRocks Ok, good to know. I just, saw it on a map, after looking at the U.P.
@@powerlinekid4296 It's a really cool place from what I've heard. There are good rocks there too. It's the best spot to find Isle Royale greenstone, as you may have guessed from the name.
I got back from up at the two hearted Tuesday and the lake is a creepy calm compared to when I was there. My group I was up there with and I found a few of yooperlites and a couple agatey looking rocks but the wind and waves were crazy. I love going to Lake Superior to look for rocks either way because there’s just so many cool ones.
When we were there, it had been calm for several days before, so I think the beach was pretty picked over. The best time to be there would be just after one of those big storms.
@@MichiganRocks that’s what a few people up there said one couple found an orange agate about the size of a half dollar with what looked like might have been amethyst in the center. I had to sit in my tent for most of the day so it wouldn’t blow away.
@@NightSkyGuardian Wow, that is windy.
I found a piece of very pale amethyst in that area. It's in the tumbler now. I hope it looks more purple when polished.
I found a geode agate here.
Awesome! That's a fun find.
You manage to have many clear days and calm wind and waves to search the shallow waters!
When I hunt close to home, that's not a coincidence. I watch the weather closely and choose my days carefully. When I go to the U.P., I just look for three or four days in a row without rain. Not having wind on those days is just a bonus. Over the past five or six years that I've been going up here, I've had more calm days than not.
@@MichiganRocks it's certainly worth a trip up there..."to that place up north " from the Buckeye state!
Sorry I’m late checking in. I was out rock hunting till almost dark. That ought to be a valid excuse if there ever was one. Ha Ha ! With all the wildfires out west I was just wandering the other day if they ever had any in Michigan. Now I know !!! One of these days I’m gonna have to visit Lake Superior. Nice video, as always !!!!!
You never said if you found any rocks. A valid excuse needs to come with some evidence.
Michigan Rocks I got about a 5 quart container of Unakite, Epidote, Quartz, Banded Chert, Chert, Mudstone, 1 piece of Chain Coral, 4 tiny Petoskey Stones, and a bunch of unique looking stones that I don’t have a clue what they are.
One pair of wet shoes and socks !!!
@@davidhile5363 Wow, sounds like a successful trip to the beach.
I am planning a camping trip to Muskallonge in October. What rocks did you find there?
Here’s the video. The rocks are similar to the ones in this video. ruclips.net/video/FTAv1QjFkRw/видео.html
@@MichiganRocks Thank you. It was cold up there in June. I was over at Crisp Point then. Brrr.
@@denisemoynahan2879 I did this video and several others in June. It was cool, but not cold when we were there, other than in the morning.
@@MichiganRocks ☺️ I was sleeping in my Wrangler. Night were cold.
I'm up about 4 most days, without an alarm, so I'm a sunrise guy and hardly ever see a sunset. I love walking beaches as the sun is lighting the wet rocks left by the out going tide.
I wake up earlier than I used to, but not quite that early.
Love that beautiful bridge that leads to the beach! I just looked up omars, or omarolluks, a few nights ago, to compare them with the man-made stones that native Americans made to grind up things in. Very interesting to me.
I’ve heard that a lot of people mistake omars for Native American artifacts.
@@MichiganRocks Yes, I've heard that too, but the dents in the omars are usually a lot smoother. I read that the dents in omars happens when a softer material in the base rock dissolves away, leaving a hemispherical hole. Do you know if that's true or not?
@@gayle8153 I think so. I read the same thing.
The void in the rock is the result of selective dissolution of a carbonate concretion that forms in the greywacke. The rock itself comes from the Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay.
Nice one!!! Would be interesting to see these post tumbling!
I just put in a load of rocks from this summer, so sometime in the future, you'll be able to see all of them. I don't tumble the omars, in fact, I don't usually bring them home. I have a box of them I brought home several years ago and they've never left the box. I also don't tumble the Lake Superior agates I find, I just keep those as I found them.
Bonito luga em gostei
Love the reverse Omar!
❤️
Great finds
Thanks to the link for omars. I love learning new things! Nice finds today, gentlemen. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Super beach vistas I could have watched for much longer. So sad when vast areas are fire damaged, my heart goes out to all those in the West of USA suffering so badly now. Nature will do the healing but it’s a long process 🥺.
Sorry the video was so short. We had traveled from Lake Superior State Forest campground that morning, set up camp, drove to Crisp Point, and didn’t have a very long time to hunt by the time we got back. We had a very busy day.
I can’t even imagine how sad it would be to have so many acres burning around me like they are in the West right now.
planning my first trip to look for agates and I learned about omars watching your videos- definitely gonna keep an eye out for them. thanks!
If you're going the eastern U.P., they're pretty easy to find. I haven't posted the video from this year yet, but Vermillion Point probably has the most. The last little clip of Sam showing off his sombrero rock was shot at Vermillion Point. That's a good spot for agates too.
Nice video, what are you going to do to keep busy this winter. It will be here before we know it.
Well, I have a lot of rocks and lapidary equipment in the basement. That will be a good place to start.
You called the one with hole an "omar"? Those really cool rocks.
Sorry, I should have explained what that is. I have explained in other videos. It's hard to know how much to repeat myself. Some people have watched almost all of my videos and for other people this is their first one. Anyhow, omar is short for omarolluk. Here's an article about them: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omarolluk
Cool, it's on my bucket list yet
It's a good spot. I wish we had a little longer to hunt there, but we were at a couple other beaches that day too. It was later this evening that we went Yooperlite hunting.
I love the view as you huys were walking over the bridge. The agates you guys found looked really cool too. 😍🥰💜😇
Thanks Indyana.
@@MichiganRocks Your welcome.😍🥰💜😇
I've never been to Lake Superior, everything you picked up looked good to me! The stones with the dents are very interesting!
Those are omars, short for omarolluk. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omarolluk
@@MichiganRocks they travelled a long way!
Cool! Too short, but cool. That fire must have been horrendous 😑
It must have been. I wasn't there, but I remember hearing about it. Sorry the video was short. I'll try to find a little longer one for next week.
Those are awesome. We are headed there tonight. To the two hearted river campground. Hope we can find some good ones too.
I'll bet there's a rock or two left there.
LOL I'm sure there is. I just need to find them is all. I think i found some in Minnesota. Not sure if they are agates or not. Still pretty though.
@@donnalantz7981 If you find a good one, there's not much to wonder about. I find a lot of them that I wonder about. They may be agates, so I call them "maygates".
@@MichiganRocks oh my goodness, I just found a amazing agate at sea gull point. Hubby found one at a place north of here. I am so excited.

Cool video ✌ I was just here on the 2nd and 3rd. Beautiful place - I was wondering about the trees...thats crazy. We actually drove back up there this past thursday-saturday but stayed at superior campground west of muskallonge. Took a few hours but finally found our first yooperlites!
Congrats on the Yooperlites. We found them here and at the Lake Superior State Forest campground. We camped at both places.
