- As some Canadian colleges and universities face daunting deficits and decisions on where to cut spending, a critical examination of the sector's viability is emerging.
Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., was the latest to project a staggering deficit this week. In a post on its website Wednesday, the institution said it's projecting a nearly $36-million deficit in its next operating year.
It referenced factors like an "ongoing tuition freeze for Ontario students'' and "a decrease in international student enrollment" for the figure.
As Neetu Garcha reports, the moves have unions raising questions about ongoing cuts at institutions across the country.

Pull the plug, reduce salaries and deport, deport, deport.
Cut your spending universalities, too dependent on the international dollar instead of teaching Canadian students. What are you teaching students, when the school can’t manage their budget
When to use apostrophes.
@gormenfreeman499 REIT, Airbnb investing by high income people and inflation due to support of nazi Ukraine are not the cause of high rising prices in rental market but international students, yeah that sounds right
@gormenfreeman499Why is this problem happening now?

We don't need these colleges in bumfuck, nowhere. Have a few colleges/unis in big cities - that's enough.
Tuition has never been higher and they can’t make ends meet? Throw the whole system out.
The highest number of government funds go to university, plus they overcharge students, so where is the money going? Check the administrative level where money is leaking
They also get donations
The irony is that the admin is the one who has control of this.
Yes, before the pandemic, the Universities didn't require an enormous influx of international students to support their financials. Why do they need it now?
They overcharge local students. The foreigners aren't supposed to be here. They pay a bribe to get admittance to take the slot from a local. That's why they're charged so much.
In the 2021-22 year, SFU president Joy Johnson made a salary of $383,682, while the remaining four members of the university’s executive team earned between $263,431 and $271,354, according to public data. Are higher-salaried administrative roles really necessary?
Yes if you’re running moving parts of a small city then yes. The energy and maintenance is real cost, the reason deficits are happening is because people realize they don’t want to be taught emotions and feelings by activist professors. 70% of classes are useless.

@shakyjake2133 yes indeed, I mean I went to play baseball. I didn’t care about the education part. I have public library and Amazon for that.
@josephsmith594 I went to play baseball but my major was history. Then proceeded to go to law school at osgoode. Then decided law firms are full of idiots as having degrees doesn’t make you smart. So now I happily run a sewer/storm and Watermain company.
SFU seems to be poorly run. Maybe they should look at how much they pay their executives
Its the same problem in my Alma Mater, Saint Mary's University located in Halifax.
In the case of Saint Mary's University, they're home to one of the world's most renowned business schools, the Sobey's School of Business, but its one of the worst managed universities in the country.
Not only are Saint Mary's University also dealing with financial management problems, they also seen their enrollment levels declined 20% over the last ten years while other Nova Scotian universities have steady or even increasing enrollment.
Things have got so bad at Saint Mary's University that their Faculty union want their President, Dr. Robert Summerby Murray, to resign.
Yes, the executives ....BUT DON'T IGNORE ALL THE OTHERS ......ALL.

When has that ever happened?

They should layoff the highest paided first if you want to save money. Or something useless like a drama teacher a completely useless course

The higher up’s in these institutions are trying to retain their current salary levels. Nothing new unfortunately.
Several universities in Canada are dealing with major financial woes, not just Simon Fraser University, but also Laurentian University in Sudbury, Queen's University in Kingston, and Saint Mary's University in Halifax.
The crash is going to be so hard Stalin is going to feel it.
Stop hiring people with deficits?
Post secondary indoctrination.
they are spending too much on DEI
look at the sunshine list, SOOO MANY staff at universities making 100k+, of course its not sustainable
You think 100K a year is a lot? I earn that driving trucks.
regular scholl teachers and administrators don't get paid anywhere near as much as the universities and most of the teachers and admin who work at a high school would do a better job for less money than these hucksters. Universities should be run by the provinces board of education and not by a private board which profits from the university.

I think universities were mis-managed. Yes, government funding cut back…because they have elementary school, secondary school unions from different boards from support workers to teachers to deal with on top of medical unions and host of other public sector unions, at the same time trying to update aging infrastructure. Foreign students were a cash cow, and universities and colleges turned a blind eye to the scam many of these students did not meet the criteria to be students in Canada and didn’t police 1-2 year business programs by private schools geared to international students. I have seen mature international students being picked over local kids for jobs and co-op programs.
what programs were cut? i think many newly developed programs in the arts/humanities in the last decade or so, were just rubbish nonsense. lesbian dance theory was the term my nephew used as well as other students in STEM programs, to describe some of the new humanities programs. he became an engineer and i found that humorous. as long as STEM is kept alive - as it very much should..... then i don't think anyone needs to be concerned.
Best decision after the housing crisis. It was the massive international students that caused born citizens move out to get an education for years.
BC - 54% marginal tax rates for incomes that cannot buy a house in a neighbourhood that would be considered luxury (foreign owned)
Yet healthcare, education, housing and infrastructure are failing.
I wonder when the union guys who vote Liberal and NDP will clue in.
I went to my dentist office on underground floor of an office building near North York Centre, walking pass by several class rooms of a small college (I think it was CDI) and wondered if the place was in Canada or India. Not only the students were all Indian but also the teacher was Indian. Why did Indian students come to Canada to study at a small unknown college with Indian teachers???
Most of them don't study, they cheat in exam, and they only come to work outside of achool and get PR.
Because they have no intention of leaving...
Go into the trades, that is where the money is now, will never be laid off with a Red Seal and a few years experience...
I agree with you. Get a trade skill such as electrician and plumbing.
@@azntoogood I am a tradesman and have been for 40 years.... this is over-exagerated and many in the Union are unemployed for years at a time. What the governments want is cheaply paid trades. Top trades make 45 dollars an hour in the Union, but on average they make 30 dollars an hour - Non Union and often laid off. No one wants to talk about how much money the lawyers, dentists, doctors and others in the medical fields are making. There are thousands in Canada with red seal and lots of great experience that are laid off. You need to get your facts straight.
But that being said, the trade has been good to me overall, being in the union for most of my career. A lot of these University degrees are useless as well. Don't get me wrong.
@@MarcRac-yc5es Death and taxes only guarantees, the tech workers are all getting laid off too after many good years, Alberta oil jobs have always been boom and bust etc...

That sounds pretty bad. I think it shows how weak our system is.
Does he value canada like a born canadian. I doubt it
Too easy for our govt to be hijacked
Yep spot on and well said. From my point of view, Canada is nothing but a memory.
Why do you doubt he values Canada like a born Canadian?
If you said that about an Israeli it would be considered antisemitism
Maybe Simon Fraser shouldn't have built other campuses like Surrey and Downtown. Time to sell them for condos. There are way too many colleges in Ontario
Something doesn't add up. There is definitely something wrong with the system. Time to fix it.
One thing that’s crazy about all these comments is they have no clue how much it costs to just keep the schools lights on and everything working😂. Wild since I assume most went or are In uni. Then they wine about people making 200,000 plus a year. These kids actually think their tuition covers anything other than faculty running the place. Government pays for the rest. Welcome to clown world when uni kids don’t understand reality.
*How can they teach others anything if they are not even able to manage their own finances?*
People just aren't paying as much for woke crap any more
Easy way to answer this if the government doesn't want to help regular people that are on the street that go wanna go college and they can't put food on the table.Guess what's gonna come first
Can we see those numbers?
Cut out the stupid woke course and their profs, job done. I have zero sympathy for the international student mess either.
Just another example that colleges and universities are for-profit institutions. A lot of them even falsely promote employment prospects of certain programs. The education system needs to be completely revamped, starting right from pre-k up. All these educational institutions are in it for themselves to make as much money as possible off the backs of students. The students are a last priority at most of these colleges. Most of the parking at these places is for staff only, leaving students flustered every day to park blocks away. Have an issue with something and send an email or voicemail to student services, but never hear back, but have any tuition or student fees overdue, you'll be sure to hear from them promptly.
Deficits… what don’t you get. Say it deficits.
So is this Fluff staff...like our government over staff
For everyone who complains about international students, yes please put a stop to that and all economic problems will solve themselves
can’t hurt
I will never vote for Pierre Poliever. Be careful what you wish for Canada. He stated he will arrest any Canadian that donated to the starving children in Gaza. I will be voting 3rd party NDP.
Go to Gaza then. NDP IS PART OF THE PROBLEM...AS ARE THE FOLLOWERS.
I'm sure the droves of international students aren't a problem somewhere. And the hundreds of thousands being paid to upper management. Maybe they need to be tossed out if they don't want their pay to go down.
They are gonna cut civics (which have almost never been existent) 😂
Don't forget people, diversity is our strength 😅
Slap a Carbon Tax on them, and increase the fees
Thank you....a "Reckoning" is exactly that!
Ah, finally some warm and fuzzy news. I watch this over and over again when I need a good laugh.
Canada is nothing but a memory.
Universities only need to teach STEM and trades...everything else is just a waste of taxpayer money.
Shouldn't people learn the language before they come here?

The government has to fund the schools otherwise they're forced to increase tuition. The costs of running a university goes beyond salaries, and those costs are rising.
