John Lennon said Ringo would have been a star without the Beatles, and I agree. He has such a natural charisma, a great sense of humor, and a passion for music.
I mean his name is Ringo Star even without the Beatles he would always be a Star
David Roberts IIRC he was the first Beatle to have a hit. Had plenty of hits. Didn't vanish right away.
The interviewer asked " why did this happen ? " The response should have been because of the MUSIC.
Lennon and McCartney wrote over 200 songs and Harrison wrote some great ones too. They also added great vocal harmonies. Ringo is a great drummer and personality but .....
@@powerpopaholic876 name the hits .
Vinny D
Haha doing what. He was a mediocre drummer at best. Had the looks of an overdone pizza and will be remembered for his two fingered salute rather than his drumming. He would still be in Liverpool on a council estate sipping his glass of mild every day and in and out of the bookies he was just a passenger along for the ride.
I sat next to him in Studio City, CA. He turned to me and shook my hand, saying, "Hello, my name is Richard." I was utterly Gobsmacked.
T Rohan but he doesn’t shake hands
T Rohan ...strawberry malingerer forever!!
T Rohan Gobsmacked with a capital "g"? 😱
Hard to believe that.. he does not shake hands with anyone. He is an elbow bump
Wow!
1:35, man ringo was before his time, he knew all along..
lmaoo
Fun fact (not so fun for Ringo) he is now a germaphobe after catching so many viruses and diseases as a young kid and young adult so he was probably doing that to avoid germs spreading.
He knew there'd be wimps like you hiding in your mommy's basement over a mild strain of the flu, huh?
@@rmartin7558 A mild strain of the flu that killed 500,000 Americans
"I LOVE to Play." This is what makes a good musician.
This is what makes a good whoever.
Roger that.
YES -that's right.
John
yes
im glad that he is still healthy
He had very bad health as a child, nearly died. he has been a vegetation long before Paul.
me too
~ "Vegetation?"
So is he!
I mean yea, Paul and Ringo are invincible. They are vegetarians, how bad can their health be? And Ringo looks freaking forty years old, NOT 79!!!
Another thing I wanted to mention: I had just arrived in the US alone from Cuba at a very young age- I was sent to live with distant relatives that, let's, just say, it was not a picnic- Shortly afterwards, our beloved President was assassinated- The country was truly in mourning and we all knew that life as it was once was would never be again. Then, on February 6, 1965 you guys arrived in NYC, and eliminated all the sadness and darkness! The fabulous Beatles! You brought such happiness, joy, unity, peace and love! You gave us the feeling that nothing was impossible to achieve! What a wonderful childhood you and your music gave me and all I knew! Love you, Ringo, George, Paul and John forever! Best to you, your beautiful wife Barbara and all your family and loved ones! Thank you!

I don't know why, but I thought JFK died later in the decade. I never realized that important timing! I'm sorry for all you've had to go through, but jealous you were able to witness the Beatles phenomenon when it was happening.
The Beatles toured America in 1965 but arrived for the first time in 1964, less than three months after the president's assassination. Like you said, wonderful timing.
Amazing to watch this I was lucky enough to be on the production crew during this interview...at exactly 14:10 you can see my hand in the background waving!! After the interview Peter Mansbridge fired me on the spot!! It was bloody worth it! Peter, if you are reading this you are a hoser!
Yea, and before that there's someone on the right on frame, looks like adding up the money on the cash register - who was THAT?
I actually noticed that the first time around
Why did you get fired

He had gray hair in his 20s, so try to imagine him with solid gray hair now. I think he would look his age then.
Yeh I agree. He looks his age. His brown hair and beard is out of a bottle which does take at least 10 years off people who would otherwise have white hair. I notice that Macca has started to let a little white hair show now - good thing, he was starting to look like the mother in the chair in Psycho.
lol, Macca from Psycho. Too much black dye doesn't work on anyone's aging look.
Hard to believe Ringo is 75,man.He looks great,for a guy his age,maybe 55. :)
+Foolishpleazure Like he said in the interview "Everyone over 40 was like a grandpa when i was young, and you don,t know until it you are there".Just goes to show that when"normal" older folks use their age as an excuse for something.....I mean it,s less about how Ringo looks than the vitality and the agility he has. No amount of money ,or fame or cosmetic surgeons can buy that.
+ThE WEeK iN ReArViEw! You have to redefine what is JOB means to you. You mean 9-5 or 8 hours daily job? Of course, he didn't. He works as a musician.
oo1ooo1oo
I know what I am watching it in.and i know what age he looks,to me,anyway.mayve not to kids who dont know any better...
He never held a job? Gosh, you are so fucking stupid. It was one hell of a job to be in the Beatles, you have no idea how hard they worked, you fucker.
relax
Have seen the recent Beatles Doc Get Back three times now. Ringo is the best kept secret. Never realized how much went into drumming and he was a drumming god. The beat channeled through him. He was (is) so intelligent, responsive, hilarious, loving. The scene with him playing with Linda McCartney's 5 year old daughter while recording is priceless. Too sweet. He is the starr of that documentary.
agreed
Ringo hadn't been inducted into the Music Hall of Fame. Paul found out about that and told TPTB that "that just won't do" and promoted Ringo to get the respect he deserved a long time ago. He' in the Hall of Fame now. (about time they corrected their error)
*William found out about that. Still doesn't make him a good person.
Ölsk Zeri bro ive watched multiple different interviews and videos about the beatles over the past couple of hours and you are always in the comments section telling someone that Paul is William. why do you feel the need to tell everyone that? just let it be. Anytime i see a comment talking about Paul you always jab into it saying it is William. Why is it such a big deal to you that people need to believe what you believe?

So down-to-earth, so humble, so genuine. And he's 79 almost 80, I can't believe he doesn't look it still!

I met him yesterday. We shook hands for 5 minutes straight, talked about the Beatles, and he signed ALL my Beatles albums and bootleg albums!!
I'm Jeleous
That's a lie because Ringo only bumps elbows lol
I met him as well. He invited me to dinner, told me all about the beetles and signed my entire record collection. Then he invited me on stage to sing with his band and asked me to join his all Starr band.
Lol to all of your pathetic encounters. When *I* met Mr. Starr, he not only shook my hand and signed my bootlegs, but he took me to the Island of Sodor to meet Henry the Edgar-Allen-Poe-ed Engine, and then gave me a personal tour of the Octopus's Garden!

This man has lived through Michael Jackson, Elvis, Freddie Mercury, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Journey, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Frank Sinatra and hundreds more. He has seen it all. What a life.
For a man who had a sickly childhood you could say he has beaten the odds.
Can't Believe he was Narrator of first Thomas the Tank Engine series.
+Links595 Why can't you believe it?
It's a colloquialism - he means he appreciates the fact.
Here also narrated Series two of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends.
Mr. Chopsticks I don't know about him but I grew up with Thomas the train and I loved the voice of the narrator. I became a full beatlemaniac about a month ago and today I found out he was the narrator so I was extremely supprised.
Believe me i can, my kids where around the time he was doing it lol
I love how the beatles went from being One Direction to Pink Floyd in a span of just 5 years
More like 2 or 3 years if you compare the Ed Sullivan era with say Tomorrow Never Knows and Revolver album.
He and George were the most straight across and real.
Well some fans (on Tumblr and Fanfic. net) aren't so sure about the "straight" part.

Anyone else notice the Yoko Ono book right behind the interviewer next to Ringos book?😂
Bruce Wendell No I never noticed the obvious book in the video.

Ringo seems like the "nicest" Beatle

Secret Secretsson Nicest living one. Him and George were the nicest of the beatles, but Id say George was the nicest
Sympatisk and nicest.
Tough call, people often say it is George. Then again they were the very best of friends. Goes to show
George was the nicest and most fascinating Beatle.
What's not to love?!? Ringo gives the answers you want to hear with real candour. Thank you Mr Starr- you are a star
Ringo has always been my very fav Beatle. He’s ‘79 now & still going strong, always witty, bright & smiling. Luv Ringo.
Ringo, day-um, life has held you in its arms well. I'm one of the original fans...and admire all the work you've done since. Thank you for all you've created and done, and sharing your history. Ta!
I don't hate or dislike the other Beatles, but I've always thought Ringo to have the best and most genuine sense of humor.

The Beatles are legendary and will be remembered forever!!!!! GREATEST BAND THAT EVER LIVED!!!!!
Totally right!
And the greatest band that ever will! I became a teenager (13) in the week that the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan. It has defined my life. All 4 Musical genii. And all 4 from the same grubby blue-collar town, when Britain had saved the world but was still an economic basket case. They single-handedly (quadri-handedly?) launched the post-war world. Elvis was amazing, but didn't change average people's lives like the Beatles. The threat of nuclear annihilation didn't even change people's lives like the Beatles. It still amazes me.

Ringo: ✌️ 👁 👃 👁 ✌️
Ringo is my favorite Beatles followed closely by Harrison, imagine meeting these guys in the early day pre 66, what a true treasure this guy is.
For those of you young people, know this, in the day, 1964, RINGO was the best rock drummer there was. I was and still am a DRUMMER, I appreciate his drumming today so much more. He's truly ONE OF THE VERY BEST Drummers ever. Make no mistake about it !!
gaspo2180 When John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world, he replied, "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles."
ralphi nia What else do you expect from John Lennon?
Great guy he is, but a great drummer? Mediocre at best. I'm not sure he can even play on a marching band.
@@ralphinia825 this is a mis attribution. Lennon never said this, in fact he frequently praised Ringo's drumming as being integral to the band. He is the greatest drummer there'll ever be
Keith moon
One of the best people ever. People don't know how much he innovated drumming. Grip, tuning, timing, placement (on a stand front-and-center). His timing was perfect without a metronome. And just the sweetest soul in rock-n-roll. When Ringo dies: Gandhi Ji Status. International Treasure. Oh, and Ringo was the first Beatle Americans embraced. We got him immediately. He hasn't changed that much.
Nice interview. Sobering up really helped bringing Ringo back. This is fun ❤️
Ringo has been sober since around 1979.
Isn't it sad to think that no one will ever be as incredible and legendary as the beatles?
looking back, their music might seem pretty normal to a lot of people but they were so talented, charismatic and way ahead of their time!
great interview. lovely photography
Great interview? When an interviewer asks any "What's your favourite...." questions, they get an automatic fail. It's lazy and it's not journalism. It's something a grade fiver would ask.

That should be a meme
I'm laughing so hard and it's night😂😂
Now that you've said that, I've listened to it 332 times. :)

11:50 I love how blunt Ringo answers "No."
Some people have already forgotten how blunt John Lennon could be; but maybe that’s good
...the way he should've worded the question is " so some of your favorite songs ....what comes to mind ? "
Excellent! Instead of getting angry, that's much better. Just like we Germans.
Me too. That was so sweet❤

LoL, really !! Lol
"Favorite Beatle?" The answer is always George, of course...everyone knows that...so why ask it? (Harrison wanted 'Ringo' in...period...and wouldn't hear of anything else) Although John & Paul were all for Ringo (they'd already worked with him many times in the past) it was George who told them "We need him in...the band needs him! He's the best there is for us, for our 'sound'...and he can sing as well". And of course they were 'Besties' as well...George/Richie got along like 'peas & carrots'.
Ringo used to refer to George as "my little brother".
Their relationship was probably strained when George bedded his wife.
@@wms72 Or George sued him over the mix of a song (post Beatles, of course.)
Are you off your meds?
George is your favorite Beatle, and that's subjective and you're entitled. Even though anyone who knows anything, would say John is the greatest Beatle.
In thoses early days esp, John made the major band decisions. He pulled for Ringo, while the others agreed. Pete didn't, if course, but there ya go..
Just saw him in Windsor. He looked and sounded fantastic! Thank you Ringo for a great show!!

Ringo is and always will be the best drummer ever to me. I'm trying to find some full concerts of his since his tours never come anywhere near me. Any ideas?? I pulled one up but it wouldn't play. I love his accent and sense of humor, I could listen to him tell stories all day. Great ingerview.
I sooo LOVE Ringo. He's so real, unpretentious.
Great interview, he was always underrated in the early going. It wasn't til later on, after the breakup that he was even thought of as an artist. He's still going strong, I really hope to see him perform again at least once more before there's no more touring. Long live Ringo, "Peace and Love".

I love John and Paul, but for me it was you and George. You two held down the fort.
There's no doubt that the photos in his book are marvelous... capturing the journey as Ringo witnessed it, and not as an outsider "Beatle-maniac". I have to say though - and I'm not sure that Ringo has even ever considered it - that in taking these pictures of the other Fabs, many times Ringo also captured the beautiful recording gear that they used in the sessions at Abbey Road at the time... Telefunken and Neumann microphones, EMI recording consoles ( specific only to Abbey Road), the various audio processors used, and even the instruments in the room... and to an audio engineer (or musician, or music historian), these various audio components of that era that provided "the sound" of their recordings, are JUST as fun to look at as the pics of The Fabs themselves. Many of these pieces from the 50's and 60's (and even the '70's) that were common in nearly every pro studio in those days are now collector's items in the audio recording community; and can often demand high prices. These pieces of analog recording equipment are still sought-after, because they sounded great then - and they sound great now - and are still known for their warmth and richness of sound that today's digital technology doesn't offer. FWIW. ;)
Isadora Duncan works the Telefunken.
God bless you Ringo. you have been and still are a class act. wishing you many more years of playing and happiness
He looks incredibly young for his age. Great sense of humor.
Ringo, is someone you can trust to give an honest account of Beatles history; I've seen interviews with Ringo in which he is often asked how he joined the Beatles and his version of events is consistent always.

Great job Peter, not sure many others could pull off this quality interview with Ringo.
Howard Stern: Hold my pint!
My favorite musician, by far. His answer to top ten favorite songs was spot on. I have about 500 top ten songs in my list ! I was lucky enough to see Ringo back in the 1980's at the national 4th of July celebration concert in DC with the Beach Boys. I'd love to see him in concert with the All Star Band. My 3 favorite Ringo solo songs are the No No Song, Sixteen and Photograph. I need to collect his solo stuff again - I used to have it all on vinyl. I guess he's beyond the No No stuff if he's into the twigs and berries diet. Good for him ! I hope he lives to see his century mark.
At the risk of sounding like a creeper, I love that he's got lighter glasses so you can see his unique eyes here! And more to that point, I overall adore Ringo for never getting a nose job or changing his accent.
I agree--he's so cute & charming just like he is!

I'm watching this on New Year's Eve 2018, 2 hrs away from 2019 and this is what you call a GREAT INTERVIEW done by a MASTER interviewer. Ringo likes this guy a lot. Why ? Cause he's old enough to remember the 60's. He was there (like me). Yeah, Ringo was in the hospital and was so sick he should have died but he didn't. It was meant to be. FATE. The rest is HISTORY, thank goodness.
Why not use Ringo's song, Photograph in this piece?
