In the actual game lore of Tom Nook, he used to be homeless. He started this job at a young age and slowly rose to the top to where he stands today. The Nooklings, his “nephews”, were actually orphans that he adopted, which is why they always referred him as “fearless leader” instead of uncle whenever you talk to them. The money you give to Tom is not kept. He uses it to build homes and such. He never keeps any of the money. A lot of this was revealed in the Animal Crossing guidebook. I can’t remember which one though. (I think City Folk?) He wasn’t originally straight forward though. In the original GameCube game, he would tease the player and say that if they don’t pay him back, he’ll have his raccoon goons to confront them. It’s to, you know, “start a fire under the player’s butt”, reference of that kettle story. He’s still kind of a trickster but even then, he wasn’t interested in harming the player.
Also his original shop in the first game is said by some villagers to have been Tortimer's old garden shed, so he literally worked his way up from being given a garden shed by the mayor to handing out housing to others and allowing them to work his way up.
Imo he deserved itor than isabelle... He is overallore important and prolific in the series than isabelle, and isabelle was only.really chosen for her popularity. Or at least he shouldve gotten an echo over isabelle...
Honestly, Isabelle could easily be made to work like Bowser Jr., with each skin being a different "special character" They all have roughly the same body types (way more so then the koopalings do in the first place)

I like how some people who call Tom Nook "evil" are the type that hope to get everything for nothing. They want to get a house and not pay for it, they want to sell their junk to the shop but not pay/work for that privilege. In Animal Crossing, you show your broke ass self in a town with no money and instead of walking around the town like a hobo and begging for change Tom Nook gives you a house in exchange for work. Same with New Horizons, who actually go around on cruise with no money? I guess deserted island life means free of cash?

I get the whole joke of like "Being in debt for life" and whatever but really I mean, You can pay up your loan whenever you want, how is that not generous? lol
Having never played an Animal Crossing game before New Horizons, I had always heard the jokes that Tom Nook was some sort of loan shark. Color me surprised when I meet him and discover that he's actually a nice hard-working guy just trying to make an honest living in the world. Does he use you to do a bunch of his labor at times? Most definitely but he also gives you HUGE loans to build and expand not just your home but an entire island as well as a way to go to other islands for more resources. Considering that he doesn't charge you interest on your loans but DOES pay you interest for keeping your bells in a savings account I'd say he's better than most capitalists in the real world today as he encourages saving and rewards your hard work.
The fox having a good reputation in Japan is a bit of an understatement. While there are many stories about foxes being evil tricksters, they are also the messengers of the shinto god/goddess (gender shifts for kami between eras) Inari. Inari is the most widely venerated kami in Shinto, with most shrines being partially dedicated to her. If you've ever seen a red gate in front of a shrine, that's specifically for Inari (the red ones). There are some larger Inari shrines that also have kitsune guardians at the entrance, instead of more traditional lion-dogs. Red just happens to be a more nefarious one.

List of Tom Nook's good qualities: No interests in loans and mortgages (can be a bit unfair, but hey, he needs to run a business and feed and take care of Timmy and Tommy, and both are definitely not cheap).
