    2 door hardtop like yours are called "Sport Coupes"
    Some came with the antena on the right front fender and some on the right rear fender.
    Mine had it on the rear and I added the optional left rear fender antena to give it a more balanced look. Mine was Silver Poly Blue with blue interior and white molding inscripts.
    283 powerglide.
    I now have a red 1964 SS 327/300 hp. 4 speed numbers matching car with white and red interior

    I forgot to mention that the "bubble top" variation doesn't look near as good as your Impala with the simulated convertible 'crease' just above the back window. There were 4 roof-lines as I remember: The bubble top - the 2 and 4 door sedan - the convertible - and your style. Yours is best.

    Why not just check the cowl tag? Trim code "813" bucket seats. Only SS cars had bucket seats in 62. Atlanta cars also had SPORT X1 in the ACC code, not sure about the other assembly plants.

    • @primeredisbest
      @primeredisbest  4 года назад

      I have had Impala SS car with the bench seats in them. Back in the day, you could get one anyway you wanted it. Even with a 6 cylinder. Some of the plants that made the cars used ID's on the cowl, some did not. I am just showing what to look for in one quickly if you are looking at buying one. Thank you very much for your comment! I really appreciate it!

    • @darin271
      @darin271 4 года назад +1

      @@primeredisbest Back then SS was a trim package, not a performance package. Could you have gotten a 6 cylinder SS, yes. You also could have gotten a 409 non-SS. I've talked with several Impala people and the vast majority say go to the cowl tag to see if the car is a true SS. Every 813 trim car is a SS as only SS cars had bucket seats in 62.

    • @jroderick6785

    Like someone below said the EARLY ‘62 SS’s had the satin aluminum rear trunk panels and are correct. I know because I have one and contacted the Late Great Chevy club in the early 1980’s to inquire about it. They said Chevrolet hadn’t quite tooled up yet in making the traditional SS swirl panels and that my 1962 Impala SS was an EARLY car and correct. A commentor below said they noticed the change after the first month. Probably very few cars made -or surviving like this.

    If You should ever find Yourself w/out the key for these cars ( this should work on all trim levels
    impala , Belair , Biscayne , etc.
    should also work across g.m.
    brand lines like corvare etc. )
    This only works if car has a locking
    glove box ( w/orginal lock for car in it ) Remove the lock & take it to dealer ( or locksmith I guess ) they can cut key from that lock . I had a corvare once & thats how I got a key for it ( on that car the key fit all locks
    on some cars it will only work on glove box & trunk ) .

    When I was a kid, my mom had a 62' wagon. It was black with red accents in the chrome side pieces and a red, I want to say leather, interior. I have search my mind and I cannot find a memory of it being otherwise. Anyway, my dad had put a 283 Vette' motor in it and it had dual exhaust with Thrush glass-pack mufflers. Not a very discreet sounding car. This was my mother's grocery getter and her daily driver. She also substituted as a teacher and would drive it to school. The guys in high always were wanting to buy the car. She had a 57' Belair wagon that was set up pretty much the same way prior to the 62'.

    My first car (in 1978) was a red 1958 impala convertible with red interior. 348 four barrel and a power glide trans. I loved it but the floors were gone and after “working” on it some I realized it was too much for my skills and tools. Sure wish I had it now, I’d be able to fix it, ☹️. I replaced it with a 1967 Chevelle though so that was cool. 🙂 nice car, enjoyed the video. I guess if all options were available in any combination the only thing that makes it an SS is the trim? Are there any clues on the trim tag or the VIN that it was built as an SS?

    • @primeredisbest
      @primeredisbest  4 года назад

      Hello and thank you for sharing your story with me! Yes there is a way to tell on the Chevelle's Vin number. If it had a 136 it is a Malibu. If it has a 138 it's a an SS model. That 1958 sounds like a Dream Car! I would LOVE to have that! Red on red with the first year of the Chevy Big Block the 348! But at least you can say that you have owned one. I have sold some that I wish I could have kept too. You and I are in the same boat! Lol. On a 1962 Chevy you need to look for the typical rust issues. Hood, floorboards, trunk, etc. As far as a good deal, if you can even find one nowadays you are doing good! Lol. These cars are worth quite a bit of money fixed up but parts are very expensive to purchase! Do you homework and look on EBAYMOTORS to get an idea of what you might be getting into. Good luck my friend!

      @@primeredisbest I still have pictures of it and I've had several 62s since then too. I bought one of them from a "little old lady" in Wenatchee WA. It was a white 2dr htp like yours, but it needed paint, so I painted it Marina blue metallic and put on a set of "American" Grey-Spoke Torque-Thrust mags. The tires were 60 series white letters and the brake drums underneath those Grey Spokes were painted the same Marina blue color showing through the spokes. It was gorgeous. Wish I still had that one too. I've also owned a '63 SS, '64 SS and a '65 SS back in the day, but my rarest SS was a '61....of which I've seen maybe 5 of in my life. In 1973 I bought a 1962 Impala SS, black with red interior. 327 with automatic trans. I consider the 1962 SS only half an SS. Why? It had bucket seats but the shifter was on the steering column. It had half a consul between the front seats, which was a padded box with a lid. It had stock Impala wheel covers with an added spinner bolted in the center. In my opinion the true SS came out in 1963. Oh, and I bought the 1962 for the motor and junked the rest. I'm still kicking myself after all these years.

But at least we can both say that we have owned one! Thank you very much for your comment! Made me remember that 62 SS again! It was a good car!

      Your '62 Impala Super Sport was correct, the column shift auto was correct in all full-size Chevys that year. Only 4-speed cars had floor mounted shifters. Also SS wheel covers did have the 3-bar "knock-off spinner in place of the blue center insert.

    Good video, nice car. One other way to verify, and really the only way to truly verify if a 62 is an SS or not, is to decode the trim tag. If the car came with bucket seat interior, then its a true SS. If it did not come with buckets, then it is not an SS. As you said the emblems, grab bar, and swirl panels can all be added pretty easily. A bit harder to change the trim tag. By the way the bucket seat verification only applies for 62 model years, as far as I'm aware.

      @@primeredisbest I know people say they have seen super sport cars with bench seats... I thought the same for years.... But apparently all SS cars left the factory with buckets. It wasn't possible to check the 30 dollar SS option box without first checking the hundred and some odd dollar bucket seat option box from what I've learned. Lots can be changed in 60 years I guess!!

    I had one of these back in the day, in 1968 it backfired , caught fire in the carburetor and went up in flames, totaled! It broke my heart. I had just returned from Nam the preceding year. I've driven an Impala ever since with a 2008 sitting in the driveway right now. There are 176,000 original miles on it. It's a question now if the car will outlast me or I will outlast it. Cheers.........

      Hey buddy! The best I can remember about that is there is a little piece of metal that you can adjust so the glovebox door will open and shut. It is in the upper part of the compartment if the glove box. Maybe yours needs adjusted or missing. Give it a shot and see if that helps your problem. If not, let me know and I will try to help you if I can. Good luck to you my friend!
