I like the project you have going ! I did a 52 Dodge Coronet body swap onto a Dodge Dakota frame 10 years ago and still driving it today. I think what you are doing is a bit more difficult, i never would have thought to do it.....but now you have me interested. I am always on the lookout for 50s cars but they are scarce in my area
That's pretty cool! Yeah I'm going about it differently but I wanna make it stand out a lot. Using the bmw platform will be expensive but worth it
@6Maha6Kali6 BMW is a great choice, they are pretty reliable and run fantastic. What are you going to do about the SRS airbags ? ...and the C bus data modules....will the car modules continuously seek them out ?
@@neuromanglers I've been driving it around without a body for a while and it's been doing fine without the sensors connected. I'm going to figure everything out once the body is completely on the car. Eventually I'll do a standalone for the engine but until then in just going to figure it out as I go

Retired 4 months ago from USPS. only thing I’ve touches is my mini Cooper S. Don’t laugh ! Lol.
Will be auto crossing next year. My Chevelle, 65 impala & stang race car waiting on me. Setting up the big garage for doing those and building rat rod pu. (First stab at that. Also thinking outside the box. Want to build the pickups to handle with out of the ordinary valve train.
Figure about 2 years I’ll be on them.

Nah I'm going to run coilovers on the bmw and just slam it down low. I took the suspension out just to see how low it would go with a custom set of coilovers.
I really like what you are doing,but two things…..why did you cut out the rear wheel well? That is probably going to be a travesty. Also, it would have been a really good idea to brace that body up before you cut it apart. It’s gonna be difficult to make the doors open and close properly now.
Wider wheels and tires are going on the car which is why I cut the fenders out. the car is already braced if you watch other episodes and the doors open and close fine.
why you hack the rear wheel openings to death?
Because I'm going to put wider wheels that will poke out of the body like an old stock car. Plus they were already cut when I got the body. It was a parts car that nobody wanted.

Those are very beautiful cars, it’s just too bad the bodies weren’t treated properly. They always have a tendency to rust to hell, GM could’ve done a better job during the manufacturing process.
Yeah all the bodies I have are pretty rotten which sucks big time tbh. Which is why I have to rebuild a lot of it
I can only guess about the torsion and beaming strength.. taking the roof of a unit construction car and swapping a body structure from a full chassis car seems at odds structurally.
Because the BMW chassis is AWD there are portions of the car in the firewall, back seat and rocker areas that have .25 thick rails going through the chassis for strength. Once the body is welded to those areas and braced it becomes strong again. People have been unibody swapping cars for years without any troubles.

I do modified cars in Australia and we have strict rules on engineering and testing of modified vehicles.
Your very cool project would not be able to be registered for road use here.. too much red tape and engineering problems . I investigated doing a similar body swap.. could not find an engineer that would take the assessment on to achieve legal registration so decided not to proceed.
@@jimmyj2563 Welcome, Yeah we dont have strict rules here. There are tons of body swaps driving around the U.S. as they really dont care what we do with our cars.
Perhaps it would be best to just build a chassis from scratch.

If we do that we are considered an individual construction vehicle that must meet all current design rules same as a new car…

Not keeping the original dash makes the build second class in my opinion..I have a willys truck body I put on an explorer chassis and tried to keep all the explorer dash FUNCTION, but eventually had to just remove it all as it incompatible geometry.
If you've seen any of my other work you know I don't bother with original designs. Everything is going to be custom in the end.
