Or…..because the company invested so much into Orion they would rather force us to run rather than us exercise independent thinking and running the route in a cohesive and efficient manner. Maps allowed us to do that.
"Back when I started, we didn't have a map feature and we just had to figure it out." That's a terrible argument. I've been delivering since before GPS was introduced. The difference is that, old ORION was actually a lot better than Dynamic ORION that tries to force you to run the route in a dumb way. Routes do not follow HIN numbers, and our old DIAD had the Map Nav feature that you could use to help figure out where you were (in 2019). It's not an apple to apples comparison to act like the removal of the Map feature means things are the way they were in 2014. At the end of the day, the company is costing themselves millions upon millions in Overtime because they want to justify a terrible system (Dynamic ORION) that they wasted millions of dollars on.
@BrickedOutMedia It's not an apples to apples comparison. The old system was faster, you didn't have to deal with an idiotic system arranging your route multiple times a day, it didn't lag and need a restart once a day, the HIN numbers used to make more sense than they do now, etc. Plus, we had Map mode pre 2020 which allowed you to view a digital map which was handy. Our new system sucks. It matters to me about how much money UPS makes because UPS is the one paying our pay checks, plus I don't want to have to be incontinenced by corporate bigwigs who try to justify a failed system (dynamic Orion). At the end of the day, you shouldn't have made this video as it's moronic.
The biggest problem is dispatch not sequencing loads to keep your businesses on the first four shelves. Not to mention loads are heavier. It’s kinda hard on a heavy business route when your first four stops are in the 5000’s
I've noticed before I leave in the morning - it looks great on the computer. After the FIRST itinerary update has occurred the whole route is screwed! Maybe they should take away the itinerary update feature. No wonder dispatch scratches their heads asking why you were over allowed so much.
New age truckers, like myself, have been spoiled by the newer technology. I’m not with UPS, but I’m 1 year in trucking. I take my hat off to the true old school truckers that came before the GPS, cell phones and prior to the automatic trucks.
It's not the same as the old days though...DIAD constantly updates like every 3-5 stops, then you have to stop and look at the whole list 📃 again, so you don't have a missed pickup or business business! 😂
The map was a great way to optimize your day plan. Yes you can still do this, scrolling through the diad to see stops is a waste of time. The map function was ups being smart for once and I do believe that function saved them money. I’m not complaining.
But, what exactly do you disagree with? I didn't really take a stance, just reported and said we don't need it. I never said it wasn't great. I'm puzzled.
I started off as an air driver with no maps delivering in the countryside outside of Portland Oregon. It was stressful but learning your way around and working off the numbers itself is the real key. Are the numbers going up or down? Are you delivering on the odd side or the even side? What street am i on? And what main road is it off of. That stuff helped me tremendously. But one thing is forsure is flipping through the board to find what you need is an absolute waste of time. I remember being 22.4 and they first came out with trace. I wanted to throw my diad out of the package car every day. Fast forward to being a RPCD. They still have not improved the trace. Maps was literally the best thing ever. If you know how the block chart works and you have a map. Its game over for the packages in the back. Now there gone and im going from 6-8 hour days with a 170 stops to 10-12 hour days with 170 stops. Now ive learned to not stress over something i cant control. I look at my check and thank god for the amount ups is willing to pay for driving around in circles.
I'll admit i was pissed when they took it away. Im a lower seniority driver and our hub is in a very rural area. Our biggest hurdles are weather and unmarked addresses/streets. I was trained on the previous diad then hired when the new diad rolled out. I learned addresses by trial and error and then i got used to the map feature. It was great because i kept getting moved on new routes i didnt know at all with zero training. I realized that i was too dependent on the map and not retaining addresses as well as i was before the map feature. Shitty days resonate better in the brain lol
Thanks for watching and commenting. This is what I'm talking about. I never said it wasn't useful (some people put words in my mouth), it was, I'm just simply saying that our brains still work and need exercise. It's not the worse thing in the world that maps are gone. I don't understand the outrage. Most people want to get paid more to think less, I wouldn't sign up for that.
This is so stupid. No, no one NEEDS a map. We need a list of the stops we have to deliver that’s in a logical order and that doesn’t change 20 times throughout the day. THATS why the map was essential. It compensated for the idiotic Orion system.
I got an update about it coming back last week. Should be back soon. They had to make some tweaks due to the freezing of diad. Definitely not permanent bro
So when you first started in 2014 they never told you to get a map and get familiar with your route and area? That was the first thing they told me in 2017 as a seasonal driver. Even back then they had a map nav but no navigation on the diad
Ran without maps as I started beforehand as well. It’s simply an easier job to do with maps especially if you’re spreaded far or a cover driver. Why worry about if maps are a pacifier when the company whole job is to get us to do it efficiently right ? If you can click said stop it wants you to come back to 6 hours later and do it now vs Orions logic. Redundant as hell at this point but a computer could never completely tell us how to do our job no matter what the logic behind it is. Driver truly knows best.
I'm not changing my belief that it acts as if it's a pacifier. I never said that they weren't useful. Once you start giving a small kid a pacifier, once you take it away, they act as if they didn't survive before knowing about it. That's what I'm witnessing with some drivers, that is all.
Man I hope you’re wrong! I started driving in the summer of 2022 right after the new DIADs came out! Best feature that helped me to bonus and learn the route! Because Orion still isn’t there yet and doesn’t know what is going on in the route and has me going all over the place trying to follow Orion! It just makes your day even worse when you know the route and you have to scroll through the stops to find the next stop to go to! So yeah, I hope you’re wrong on this! I’ve heard a lot of rumors that maps will be coming back after an update to Orion and I’ve heard that maps will never come back! But yeah, I hope that they do come back when Orion is optimized to run these routes perfectly! I feel like technology can get there! I drove for Amazon before UPS their technology or what we call Orion at UPS was perfect from what I remember took you to exactly the stop you needed to be at the right time and we would blow through the routes. UPS just doesn’t have the technology yet to optimize the stops for the routes yet and can’t wait until Orion is there maybe have the map feature come back having numbers on the stops like at Amazon, but not allowing us to select our stop if that’s the way the company wants to go with it but at least having a map so we see where the stops are at the very least!
I guess we'll see. I've also heard a few rumors of them coming back, just like I've been told from dispatchers that they aren't. I guess we'll see, in the meantime, preparing for the worst. 🤷🏾♂
@@BrickedOutMedia 💯💯😔😔 but yeah, you said it in the video I can definitely learn how to run these routes without the maps. But with me being a swing driver. It’s just gonna be a hard lol!
The bridge logic is like saying they should get rid of automatics and go back to manuals. I started driving in '95. Our areas were pretty much the same everyday and we always knew our routes. It's not that way anymore. Routes can change daily. On Monday, I run my area and three or four other areas combined to make one route. It is mostly rural with a few subdivisions. In the rural area, my time allowance says the speed limit is 50 miles per hour. The speed limit is 40 and there are stop signs. It takes time to slow down and speed up from all of the stop signs. That isn't figured in to Orion's solution. So, for the first part of my day I am driving around wasting time, so that I make up to my three pickups on time. Since the time allowances aren't accurate it has me waste time the first half of the day and the second half of the day Orion doesn't know what to do because I eventually start falling very very far behind. I might be in the same subdivision twice, just to waste time. I'm talking rural area... Miles of driving, not blocks... It racks up a lot of miles, not shown on the dispatch computer, driving back and forth... The dispatch computer is around 1.5-2 hrs off. Not in my favor. UPS is the worst company I've ever worked for. I started in '89 so I've seen some stupid stuff. Taking maps away is the dumbest thing possible. I'm sure UPS will top it. The only way Orion is going to work is if everybody has proper time allowances. I'm absolutely positive that any delivery driver could run this company more competently than Carol. Maybe it's all in her master plan to break the company and then reorganize it.
I hear all of your grievances, but you lost me about any driver running the company. Drivers have no idea what c-suite duties are. Actually, the board makes more pivotal decisions than she does. Additionally, most of her salary is based on the performance of the company, so why would she self sabotage? That makes no sense.
How would you feel if they took away power steering, automatics, scan button, etc? Why go backwards? Maps aren’t a make or break feature, but it sure makes the job a touch easier.
Some drivers wrote down the stops on , they "figured it out". I suppose your say the same if it went back to that? I believe having a visual is a great aid. I remember taking a survey. One question was Do you believe technology helps you do your job? The term "technology" 50 years ago meant something different than it does today. It will mean something different 10 years from now. It's interesting to think about the battle between company and union and then consider the company regressing. "See, we told you that technology helps you do your job. Now let's bring out the drones".
It's funny how when people try to make points they go extreme lol. Writing down the stops really? I'll just leave that there. Hilarious. But, thanks for watching and commenting.
Keep your eyes moving. Say you start on the left side, make your points, then move to the front, then the right side. Always come back to the front every 2 seconds. Hit those mirrors every 5 seconds. Practice makes perfect, good luck!

Well i meam as much as ups talks about technology growing, why would they take out the maps if thats the new trend happening right now. Out with the old, in with the new.
Troy the On Car here. You may be wrong about this one. The map feature was one thing that would allow drivers to selectively choose a stop according to their experience and location. Over/allow is starting to go up all over the country. With the way the dynamic trace re-organizes routes I can understand why drivers would prefer to choose their stops. My guess is that maps will be back in the fashion that it was before they took it away.
I can tell you already DO add much needed facts and information about UPS, its verrry interesting! I worked for USPS as a CCA for a year, I’d much rather have had my foot in the door w UPS!!!
This isn't correct. Thanks for trying to break it down. I can't run the route by sections anymore. My PC is loaded by AI dispatch. My section 3 is now loaded is 3 different sections. Every section is loaded differently EVERY DAY. Businesses are in different parts of the PC. It would be nice if they were loaded pre ORION, then yes, I would delivery by the 340 methods. I will follow the blue line otherwise(of course, get my air off and start pickups when they are supposed to start).
@BrickedOutMedia it does as you stated that you just run the route like before. In my experience, I can'tas many can't as loads are setup, not by og trace, but by ORION trace.
I personally couldn’t care less about this feature. It was helpful in super dense urban areas if maybe you had something random you didn’t know so you could see it and pick it off. My only problem is that the other delivery companies are adding and implementing improved technology that actually helps them be more efficient. Maps allowed us to do that.
I use independent thinking without maps and run very efficient. But, maybe I'm different.
@@BrickedOutMedia
As do I
I don’t do stupid Orion tricks
@@042rayme That's exactly what it is. The company investing millions into a trash system that they can't admit is trash
It is apples to apples comparison.
At the end of the day, you said nothing. And what is it to you if UPS waste money? Serious question.
@@BrickedOutMedia No, it's not. You're just dumb.
More than likely it's coming back.
If it does, I'll be the first to report!😉
The biggest problem is dispatch not sequencing loads to keep your businesses on the first four shelves. Not to mention loads are heavier. It’s kinda hard on a heavy business route when your first four stops are in the 5000’s
Dispatch will always have issues. Nothing will ever be perfect, even though we expect perfection.
I've noticed before I leave in the morning - it looks great on the computer. After the FIRST itinerary update has occurred the whole route is screwed! Maybe they should take away the itinerary update feature. No wonder dispatch scratches their heads asking why you were over allowed so much.
Dispatch can turn it off if they wanted. I asked mine to do it.
Yes, that is annoying.
New age truckers, like myself, have been spoiled by the newer technology. I’m not with UPS, but I’m 1 year in trucking. I take my hat off to the true old school truckers that came before the GPS, cell phones and prior to the automatic trucks.
Salute to you!!!
It's not the same as the old days though...DIAD constantly updates like every 3-5 stops, then you have to stop and look at the whole list 📃 again, so you don't have a missed pickup or business business! 😂
Right.
💯
The map was a great way to optimize your day plan. Yes you can still do this, scrolling through the diad to see stops is a waste of time. The map function was ups being smart for once and I do believe that function saved them money. I’m not complaining.
But, what exactly do you disagree with? I didn't really take a stance, just reported and said we don't need it. I never said it wasn't great. I'm puzzled.
@@BrickedOutMedia please excuse my ignorance. The video was a great take.
@@Thegreatestversionofonesself It's cool! I appreciate you watching and commenting. ✌🏾
Navigation isn't the issue, Orion being 1000000000 percent useless at planning a route is.
Thanks for your comment. I agree.
Thanks for your comment. Sounds like you're becoming a better driver.
The old diad had a map with remaining stops. I’m bid x. I cover 20-30 routes. There is no way to remember all the streets.
@@MylesChristel It is possible , I did it learning more routes than that, never used the maps. Just saying.
UPS losing money 💵 because of the map 🗺 feature being taken away
More than one thing can be true. I'm sure they knew that before we realized that.
Thanks for your comment. Not stupid, but genius.✌🏾
I got an update about it coming back last week. Should be back soon. They had to make some tweaks due to the freezing of diad. Definitely not permanent bro
Cool, thanks for watching.
So when you first started in 2014 they never told you to get a map and get familiar with your route and area? That was the first thing they told me in 2017 as a seasonal driver. Even back then they had a map nav but no navigation on the diad
@@youngsplitter8916 Yes, you did what you had to do to learn the area.
I started on 2019. I recall being able to view maps on the 5. But according to my center it's coming back
ok..
The dispatch was more useful when we loaded by the charts and EDD than this Orion. I actually did use the map feature.
Thanks for your comment. I did too!
As a driver who's route is constantly giving splits by "AI" the maps feature was extremely useful..now I just run my route by the shelf
OK, thanks for your comment.
"Well we got used to automatics because its easier, but manuals have been around for a hundred years and automatics are just pacifiers." What i was told was the map feature was an app that cost money, by said manager during pcm. So now, they're installing lytx cameras that cost 250-500 per package car (someone prove me wrong on that price, i need correct research data) something else that makes sense.
That's a disingenuous comparison. You're comparing removing an app to removing a whole fleet and going back to manual transmissions. You may not like the bridge logic, but your analogy is off in my opinion, respectfully.

Bro maps was Edd I’m old school too but this Orion all over a the place . I would have my Thomas guide map printed out I would just knock out stops in order 🤷🏽♂️
Yeah man, SAME. I still have my paper Key Maps from back in the day!
@@robertberkovics2645 I would still be fine. What about you?
@@robertberkovics2645 And, if it isn’t breaking you, then why do you care so much ?
Or just leave the list 📃 option, but get rid of Orion...so it doesn't update your whole route like 40 times a day
Right.
O start intagrad tomorrow, any tips for the driver drill
Keep your eyes moving. Say you start on the left side, make your points, then move to the front, then the right side. Always come back to the front every 2 seconds. Hit those mirrors every 5 seconds. Practice makes perfect, good luck!

How do you know the maps are never coming back ? Sir are you the one who took them away 😂
😂😂😂 Who, me?
your approach to this is completely incorrect if the navigation function worked properly then no we would not need a map function. I myself know my route inside and out I've been on it since before you started driving. But that's not the point, the list function and constant resetting turns my route into a nonsensical jumble. I also have businesses and offices in my residentials along with the schools that I like to pick out early in the day. The map function allowed us to compensate for the failures in the list system. Yes, you're absolutely right if I follow the list I will eventually get done, but then I have to listen to my supervisors barking at me about how long it took me to deliver my day, and I know a lot of drivers out there don't seem to care but some of us want to get home to our families too. So yes, you are wrong, as it is currently the maps are necessary Even if you don't want to use it.
I'm not wrong just because you don't agree with me.
Second of all, you're a veteran driver(since you made us all know), cool. You have too much "experience" to be all up in arms about a map. smh. I don't think you're wrong, I just don't agree with you and I think you could be better. I believe in you.
@@BrickedOutMedia I'm not all up in arms about a map, what we want is an efficient delivery order which we do not have. And yes, my 24 years here gives me just a little say in the matter.

The map feature was one of the first things corporate added to something that was actually widely accepted and increased efficiency. Ups is falling well behind relying on old, failing infrastructure.
