- Before we get rolling on our rat rod Radio Flyer build, we decided to restore this $50 go kart we bought. It isn't pretty, and it isn't as feature-heavy as my $400 go kart, but it was well worth the $50.

4) Put a couple of hundred in materials into it that you already own so that you can say they are free.

Hey guys, life pro tip: if it won't start, stick a power drill on the pull start shaft with a one way bearing. Works great!
I did try that but it did not work. However I’m going to try replacing the engine. I got the go kart back in fall of 2017 and it’s definitely older than how long I’ve had it. The engine has not run before

Sometimes a little oil helps free up a weathered engine, but more importantly oil helps decrease cylinder wall scratching while freeing up frozen pistons.
The thing is these vids are never legit cause u guys already have a bunch of stuff to add on we dont

I don't know anything about fixing / working on engines. how hard is it to replace an engine on a go kart? Is it simple if the engine is already assembled? I want to do something like this.
+Robby MH If you're just replacing one engine with another identical one, it only takes around 10 minutes.

yup simple use four bolts and a clutch and the throttle
as easy as unbolting the old one and put 1 like it back on it

i'm currently planning a build on a go cart using a downwards facing crank engine. I'm using a 90 degree gearbox from another mower. Should be fine i think.
You would usually use a horizontal shaft engine for a go kart so it could go much faster. You would need like a gear box for a vertical lawn mower engine

Found one for free and bought a $15 carb for it. Runs perfect. They're out there. 😉
Yea generally for a kart you want a horizontal drive shaft. A lot of mowers will have a vertical. You COULD make it work on a kart it's just more work and not practical

I bought an older version manco dingo for $45, painted it, fixed it, got some missing bolts for it, and slapped a predator 212cc on it. It. Works great.

+Swagman 201 It depends. If it is a road racing kart, probably not, as you'll want the center of gravity to be as low as possible. If it is an off road kart, a roll cage would definitely come in handy if it flipped over.

+Austyn Sanft - Eugenio What they spent on the frame they could have spent on brand new steel to weld. With a garage like that and trashing someone else's weld job, they can have a brand new frame for the same price. And probably salvage better tires than those for free.
